set up a monthly donation Wasted an hour of my time a couple of weeks ago - when I didn't really have an hour to spare - trying to get that set up. Since I was unsuccessful, I am going to say it's impossible. I've Emailed PayPal, so I'll see what they advise... Takeaway: It shouldn't be this difficult! |

I don't remember having trouble setting this up, but now I can't find the process that I used to get there. Might have been directions in the original thread when Blake asked for help. http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/406 2/785312.html?1463137726 I think we may be missing a donation button as I can't think how else I got this working. |

I should have just sent one to you. And I'm still very interested in figuring out a way to move the data from the old forum to something new. Is anyone interested in donating toward this specific project? This would need to be over and above the operational costs and if we get people interested, I'll contact a software developer that I know and see if he is interested and how much he thinks it might cost. He writes this software that I use at work and deals with php and SQL on a daily basis: https://www.bookedscheduler.com/ Moving the data from one database to the next is the hard part, but I bet it can be done, even if in a read only way and each of us would need to register our usernames again, or something like that. I also have someone I work with that might be interested and did work like this before. I can send him a message and see if he is interested as well. But not going to ask anyone to do it for free, I would but I'm not capable of pulling this amount of work off and having it function in the end. (Message edited by greg_e on December 06, 2018) |

We've been down this road before... the "changing software road"... For those who sent me PM's this morning, I'll be trying to get your "little something" mailed out this weekend. |

This software is not maintained and therefor we really need to update to something that is current. This will take someone that can wrangle the data in the database and move it into a form that can be used by some form of current software. It can be done, but not going to be easy. Otherwise, there come a point where all of this disappears with little hope of bringing it back. |

Hey, I'm just glad we're able to embed youtube videos. It actually seems to be working just fine, and I can type the image embed command so fast now, it's pure muscle memory... I find myself on other forums typing imagelink, then catch myself... |

It's working fine "right now" but we know there will come a time where this software will no longer work on any current operating system. Things change and we need to make some steps to fix this or it will eventually end. |

If I thought I could do it, I would. I'm not that skilled. Just trying to get people to put an extra bit of money together so we can hire someone to get this work done. Not going to start asking for quotes until people commit to the funding. |

Maybe the quote should come first. No sense asking for money if we don’t know what it’s going to cost. |

Greg is right though. We are going to see a large push in the next year or two for things like HTTPS, soon Google is going to display warnings when visiting sites like this to scare people away, and eventually even blocking it entirely. They already force it on sites with .dev domains. I know HTTPS kinda works here, but not reliably. We are on borrowed time. |

I may need access to the database in order to get a quote. I'm guessing not less than $500 to move the data into new fields for some form of new forum, could be many times more than that for all I know. I would suggest Kunena forum because it is free and open source. |

Well; it looks like it's going to be necessary. If Froggy says we're on borrowed time, I believe him. When it comes to Computer Literacy, I'm barely approaching the Hooked On Phonics level, so I have no idea about how to go about what to do. Except to contribute. Badweb is one of the most amazing places I've ever been associated with. The People here are as amazing as Erik's motorcycles. The help I've gotten is far beyond what any other site would offer. This place is more like a Family than just a forum. If I can help keep it up and running, I will do whatever I can. If we can get a quote, I bet it won't take very long to come up with the money. A couple of years ago, a good friend gave me a $100.00 bill. I was told that if I kept it in my wallet I'd never be completely broke and it would be enough for an emergency. I'll put my money where my mouth is. I'll mail that bill to Blake as soon as we find out how much we need. (assuming he'll give me his address). It's the least I can do. |

I agree with everything that Crusty said. I'll pledge $100 emergency stash to this cause as well. It won't take long at this rate. Better get some quotes. |

OK, that's enough commitment for me, I'll contact the two people I know and see if they are interested. Before anyone commits, they will need access to the website and database so they can do a DB dump and see what the structure is. I'm I correct in assuming this is an SQL based database? Either open sourced or other "closed" implementation like Microsoft SQL. Blake I sent you a PM with some questions. (Message edited by greg_e on December 10, 2018) |

"What happened to all of the site sponsors?" We are the site sponsors now. And seriously? Owens, either you're one of the most obtuse people I've ever encountered, or a troll-King supreme of the wet blanket clan. LOL! We still love you either way. You've been here too long not to. What happened? At one point we had a slew of commercial sponsors contributing $57/mo. The BadWeB account was flush with cash. It was great! Then the financial crisis of 2008/2009, the finance market cratered, the recreational vehicle market took a nose dive, and gross greed-head mismanagement of HDFC (Harley-Davidson Financial Corp.), the originator of so many 7-year mortgages on overpriced chrome-laden land barges, put the entire HDI company at grave risk of bankruptcy. In the slime-ball tradition of "never let a crisis go to waste", the vindictive Buell-haters at HDMC who had gained the ear of the corporate bean counters, new CEO hatchetman included, compelled the coup de grace against BMC; that after years of sabotaging the little sport bike division of HDI through dictatorial hamstringing (Buell shall produce no truly high performance sport bike) and industrial sabotage (a 50% QA failure rate of HDMC engines). The little motorcycle company that was hardly an accounting rounding error on the books of HDI/HDMC/HDFC, despite running at a profit, was identified as a necessary sacrifice to realign the corporation for success. Absolute falsehood. Utter petty vindictive garbage from the likes of people who viewed Buell Motorcycle Company as "Erik's racing hobby" and any technical and performance innovation by Buell as an affront against HDMC. The shear ineptitude and utter lack of basic long term business sense rose so far beyond what could rationally be explained, the conclusion was inescapable. HDI actually had to pay on the order of $100 MILLION to kill off Buell due to long term contracts with Rotax and other suppliers. And then to top it off, HD refused to allow the purchase of BMC for completely contrived and nonsensical reasons. No, Buell Motorcycle Company had to be killed dead, a stake driven through its heart. To allow it to continue on and thrive and grow absent the shackles imposed by petty tyrants at HDMC/HDI was apparently absolutely unacceptable. Allowing that would reveal the foolishness of their position. And yet, EBR. Amazing. Engines pumped up to 185 HP in street trim, and built in America. The innovative front rim brake technically advanced and working even in WORLD Superbike. In head to head street bike vs street bike racing, the Hero-backed EBR product was laying waste to all challengers. Astounding. Then another corporate evisceration. Don't be surprised if it eventually comes out that Hero's betrayal of EBR turns out to have been in part orchestrated by HDI/HDMC. The carrot of producing Harley's in India would be a VERY powerful inducement for a company like Hero who is looking to go international and break out of the scooter/moped and small motorcycle market. My attitude remains very sour towards HDI, and this is pure speculation, but it makes sense where the betrayal by Hero made zero sense. So what happened to the sponsors? Some went out of business. Others don't sell any or much Buell stuff anymore. So we changed the model for sustaining the place. Commercial sponsors are still very much welcome. We actually have a few concerns who contribute from time to time. My friend Ross Phelan Daigle is working to establish his Pegasus Parts business. Check out his stuff. I wish he'd take more advantage of the forum. He busy though. Dan at NRHS was sponsoring for a while too. One of the dealers who is aggressive in dealing online parts also sponsors from time to time. It's purely an honor system. Commercial sponsors contribute via PayPal and are clear to interact here as they like. Thanks for your support. Stay true, and try not to be so darn obtuse bro. LOL! |
