I'm sorry for your loss John. I've been keeping tabs on my amicable ex for the last 10 years as she fights one form of cancer after another... It's only a matter of time, too short a time if you ask me, because she is a real contributor to humankind. Revel in the good memories, and everything negative will just fade away. | ||

Another Rainy Day I can smell the beef stew. It won’t be done for another couple of hours or so, but it’s really smelling good now. I’ll be eating some for dinner this evening. It’s pouring rain and it’s supposed to rain all day. It looks like I’ll be doing another low profile day unless I really get restless. That’s when I do foolish things. Like the time back in 1982 when I took my Superglide out during a snowstorm. It was a Sunday and the snow had been forecast by all the TV weathermen. I walked down to the corner store and bought a Sunday Paper, and it was snowing pretty heavily. I had food and cream for my coffee, so I was all set. But by mid-afternoon, I was really restless. So I put on my leathers and fired up the bike. We had gotten about a foot of snow, but the streets were plowed down almost to the pavement. I couldn’t ride very fast; I don’t think I ever got into second gear. I rode over to my parents’ house which was on the other side of the city. My dad was out front shoveling snow as I pulled up and the look he gave me showed that he thought I’d lost my mind. I helped him finish shoveling and we went inside for a cup of coffee. I stayed for an hour or so, then I rode home. I never fell down, though I had several “Moments”. That was the prelude to the rest of the winter. I rode through every snow storm that year culminating with a major Blizzard on April 6. I was working on the Subway. We were expanding the line from Harvard Square out to Alewife. I was working on the station at Porter Square in Cambridge. Normally, it was a 15 minute commute. I had ridden to work that morning and the sky was overcast, but dry. As we were heading into the hole at 7:00, it was starting to flurry. Along about 9:00, my foreman sent me topside to get something from the warehouse. The wind was blowing so hard and the snow was so heavy that I couldn’t face into the wind. When I went back down into the hole, I told the foreman that I was going home at noon. As it turned out, the whole job went home at noon. It was bad enough that I was going to just leave my bike in the warehouse and take a commuter train home. Then somebody made a comment that I’d come in to work the next day and find the carburetor gone, or other parts missing. Then one of the expressions I’d heard while working with the Loggers in the Northwest ran through my head, “God hates a coward”. So I put my leathers on and got on the bike. Then the guys thought that I really was nuts. Now; the whole city of Boston and the whole city of Cambridge also went home at the same time. Traffic was jammed. It was a long slow ride home. At one point, I was going up a hill in Belmont between the cars and the curb. The cars were all stuck, but if I gave the bike no throttle, it got just enough traction at an idle that I “crabbed” by at almost a full lock slide at about 3 MPH. It took me an hour and 45 minutes to ride home, but I made it and I didn’t fall down. That storm, by the way shut down the area for three days. I guess I can credit that memory to the first snow of the season when I was too restless to just stay home and had to go out. That led to my riding through all the snow storms and helped me to develop my snow riding skills. The Superglide was a great bike for that. Low seating and good torque from an idle on up. I just stirred the stew. It’s going to taste wonderful. I make enough for four or six meals at a time, then I portion it out into plastic containers and freeze it. I’ll have enough stew to last me a month. A couple of nights ago, I made enough Pulled Pork to last almost three months, if I only eat it once a week. Tomorrow, I’ll make meatballs and sauce. Then I’ll have enough for the next few Wednesdays. Wednesday is Spaghetti Day. It always was, when I was growing up, and I still like to cling to that tradition. The stew and the pulled pork get made in the crock pot. I’ve gotten into the habit of starting it in the evening just before I go to bed, and I let it cook while I’m asleep. The Spaghetti sauce however, gets done on the stove. One of these days, I should make Ravioli. I haven’t done that since I moved to Cheviot. That’s something to think about. Anyhow; since I’m retired and living on a fixed income, I get paid once a month. I like to cook all the big meals when I get my check (actually, it’s a direct deposit). That way, even if I spend myself broke, I’ll be able to eat until the next check rolls in. Well, that’s it for now. | ||

Good approach to cooking, Crusticle. We did a giant batch of white bean chili with leftover turkey last weekend- I scored almost 10# of free, awesome turkey from work. Made the chili and froze the rest of the meat, now have prepared chili and turkey meat in the freezer. | ||

Spaghetti sauce is one of my favorites to make. I start it on the stove then move it to the crock pot to simmer all day. One year I took a pot of sauce and 3 packages of linguine to work for pot luck. I was concerned that none of the engineers I worked with would eat "biker spaghetti" but when I went to collect the leftovers, my dishes were "licked clean"!! I used a pound of Emu meat I got from my folks, along with hamburger and bacon. Emu linguine fra Diavolo.... mmmm-good.  | ||

Our tomatoes didn't do well at all this year... sadly, we barely got to can anything. Peppers did well, but I really want my 'maters! I'll be ordering new seed from Baker Creek Seed Company in a month or two, aint messin' around next year! The 2 complaining about the cold have shakers in them. They look like they are shivering. I had to re-solder the connections on Mr. Upside, Down though. Can't complain, they run for up to three months non-stop every year. I don't leave them up as long since moving back to Indy. In a weird mood today. Woke early and put on a robe. Put a roast in the crock pot with a ton of carrots, some red and yellow potatoes, and just one little STRONG yellow onion plus seasoning. Did I mention that little onion is STRONG? Cooked 2 cheese burgers for breakfast and a white can of Monster with 3 ice cubes, 3 pimento stuffed spanish olives, squirt of lemon, and sprinkle of lime. Need to hit the shower and dress for the day. Think I'll walk around the block then. Let me see if I have a pic from up north? | ||

OK- John, thank you buddy!! That's the 2nd card I've received this year- my step-dad was the first. Yours is easily the coolest so far. Lemme see what I can work up for you and a few others. I've never been much to keep up with such things, but it's great fun to do so. I'm known for weird cards, movies, and music. A buddy from work let me borrow "Wagons East", watched it last nite- apparently John Candy's last film. Pretty dang funny IMHO- YMMV.  | ||
