When I was drag racing, I would build a motor, heat cycle it twice blipping the throttle as it warmed up. Recheck the cylinder torque, take it to the track, turn on the nitrous and go. Never had any problems because fit up and finish were meticulous.

Race engines are usually set up on the loose side to reduce friction unlike a street motor where you want it tight so it last longer. I understand that some company's use synthetic oil for break in but I've never had any luck with that. When I'm done with a Harley engine I start it and let it warm up and set the idle A/F screw and idle speed and then I let it cool. Then I fire it up and go ride it to a long lonely stretch of road and go from 2000 to 4000 rpm and I'm at full throttle by 4000 to 4500. I'm usually in third or forth gear. I let it coast back down and do it again for 12 times total. I use conventional oil for 10,000 miles before switching to synthetic. Now a Harley has mostly ball or needle/roller bearings which don't need broken in. In an engine with babbit bearings I'd take it easy for the first 50 miles or so before I ran it to full throttle. So far my engines don't burn oil and that includes our BMW M10 racing engine.

OK youn's, can I haz a bit of advice, plhleeeze...

I've got in mind a special project, figured out most of the details- planning to electrify my kitchen window bird feeder.
"Why", do you ask? I've got a super nutty super squirrel who's thwarted me over and over, trying to keep her out. Never seen anything like her.

The day after I put up my nice, new window bird feeder, voila, squirrel butt in the window. Grrr... so I cut and installed some sharp/pointy aluminum flashing around the top. She beats that. Added pointy/sharp wooden skewers, beats me again. So I trashed all that, spent an afternoon hot gluing lots of safety pins all over, each bent for maximum owie. You guessed it, she beats me AGAIN. Amazing.

So- the feeder has a removable seed tray. I'm planning to wire it with copper line throughout, quick disconnects each side, then run the wires in through the kitchen window and connect to a battery via a switch. Should I use a 9V battery or one of those old school lantern batteries, or something better? Looking forward to gitinerduun... sure I've got more important things to do, but the dang tree rat makes me feel like Wile E Coyote. Below is a link to the feeder I've got- just imagine it with a few dozen pins glued all over. I call it my "Hellraiser" birdfeeder now...

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B078Z7VTCF/ref=o h_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Feed the tree rat corn till it is fat enough to eat.

I thought about cattle electric fence charger. BUT, NOTE: THOSE HAVE A WEED BURN BACK FEATURE AND MAY BURN DOWN HOUSE IF IT COMES IN CONTACT. I use one sometimes to control where I do not want the dog ie. when there is a poisonous to her plant.

Something my dad found to combat the same problem - the Wild Bill's electric bird feeder. Uses a 9V battery. Basically, the tray around the bottom is connected to the circuit, as are the perches for the birds. The birds feathers seem to protect them, but a squirrel on the tray has to touch the perches, at the same time, to get to the feed. When they do so, they complete the circuit and the capacitor in the circuit 'unloads', giving what the instructions call a correction. Or better said, an electric shock. After a while, the squirrels will come by from time to time, look at the feeder, and move on.

Works really well. Get one of your own, or build a similar circuit?

AK- I'll look into that design, sounds like it may have a weighted trigger, which I thought of as well. Looking forward to the satisfaction of a DIY rig!

Might also google 'how to electrify a bird feeder'. Didn't go through the list, but you will get hits. Should be good for ideas . . .

if you have multiple bird perches, wire them in alternating fashion, + and -. Birds touch one perch and should be fine. Squirrels will touch more than one, thus completing the circuit with their bodies.

I don't think the 9V or even 12 volt would give enough of a shock.
How many times have you touched both terminals on a 9V battery or both leads on your bike or car.
Now, a capacitor - that idea I like.
Pick your favorite method to alternate and separate the circuit, charge that sucker up and stand back.

Where's a Radio Shack when you need one?

Could steal the circuit out of an electric fly swatter from harbor freight.

It sounds like Akbuel is talking about a capacitor being charged by the battery and then when contact is made it unloads a huge shock and is reloaded again by the battery. That ought to jolt his gonads!

Not me . . . but it darn sure brings back memories of putting a Sherman-Reilly XS-100 dolly in my D-rings and sliding out over the Mississippi River to put the aviation warning balls on for Union Electric. Not sure how high it was but the 375' towers felt like I was leaping from an airliner when I left the work platform.

I am preparing to "fly" a span like that in the coming weeks. I've got one that is over 5/8 of a mile long and has a 900' vertical drop. Foundation material and concrete was flown in with a Kaman K-Max . . . .flew the tower (roughly 18 stories tall) in with a Sikorsky S-76 Sky Crane . . . and am preparing to fly ropes and wire in with an MD-500.

Fun stuff . . . but, I am afraid my days of doing that stuff are behind me . . . .but, lots of great memories and photos.

:-)

A totally non-political video of the day
By Thomas Lifson

How smart are dogs?

Like most dog lovers, I suspect that they are a lot smarter than the scientists tell us, but I also acknowledge that I want to think so, mainly because of the deep emotional bonds a pet dog forms with its family members, and the sensitivity to its owners emotional states that many pet dogs seem to develop.

But does a dog have an ego? They certainly have personalities, but are they capable of pride in their accomplishments?

Watch the video below of a border collie watching a recording of her own performance in a competition (hat tip: AOSHQ):

I have read that border collies are considered among the smartest of all our canine companions. This particular champion does seem to be excited by her performance.

What a good dog!

Morgan, my border mix, loves watching TV.

Not so much on the "down in front" command though!

Borders are extremely high-functioning. To the extent that they are uber-susceptible to seizures - Morgan (who has one eye - hence the name, my one-eyed pirate dog!) went down a few years ago when we were at the fire pit. All dark, flicker-flicker...triggered a big one in her.

Haven't used the pit since.
