Weld a foot on each side of the muffler. Install air suspension. When you lay frame the feet act as kick stands. |

If you can jack the bike from the muffler, why not? |

Had a nice windy comment, erased it. You got a project now!! I have a trike frame in a storage unit. I'm sure I'll need it someday. Needs some work and a bunch of parts. Z |

Time to revisit my side stand issue. Why not just bracket and gusset weld to muffler? Cut back broken boss from engine mount holes. Made bracket. Went to 1\2" diameter bolts. Fits within 1\8" of factory location. Muffler is a double skinned hoss. Much more stout than I originally thought.

That'll work! Of course you now have another reason to keep a close eye on your muffler straps! |

Oddly enough I feel better about it being attached to the muffler than an aluminum engine case. The straps have not been off in 65,000 miles. We shall see how it goes. |

That's friggin awesome right there. If it ever makes any sort of odd sound when you put weight on the stand, you'll know something is up with the muffler straps. I never felt comfortable with the XB sidestand arrangement either. |

WOW..I just want to say that's a really nice Uly. My kickstands still kick. We did once weld up a set of my,once XL cases that had a broken rear Boss. Being Machinists ourselves we re-machined/drilled and tapped a new Boss. That said,we were also working with bare cases.nice repair |

Did a two up 80 mile test ride yesterday. After several stop/dis mount/ re mount moves it is still there. Still working. I'd feel better now if I removed the muffler to weld and gusset the back side. The so called burr is my new cable and wire cutter. Scissor action of the stand don't ya know. Lol |

So when do you start production? |

Started, operated, and ended. Working on long term test. Just so you know, in case anyone has a similar issue, the muffler is double skinned. I ground some thin groves in the outer shell before I welded it. So the weld did penetrate into the inner skin. I have no idea how this will work long term. I did the scare me test. I parked at a restaurant that did not have a level parking spot anywhere. We seriously overloaded the stand climbing on and off the bike there. |

I shimmed my sidestand on the Uly and it was great. It went out and didn't move when I leaned it over. the shim was aluminum. Lasted a week and gave up with a little bang. Back to the old sloppy stand.... Next is an SS shim. Z |

Well as alpha testing continues a bit of a problem has arisen. When on the stand after a few hundred miles of use/over use, the Uly is listing a bit too much to the left. There seems to be a couple of degrees of flex in the steel of the muffler. Of course it was not designed to support this kind of rotational load. It is still stable with no cracking or obvious bending. The remaining bolt bosses on the engine case are still viable for shared support. I'm thinking about going to new bolts, as I had ground them shorter for clearance to the boss's on the case. To try my theory I may epoxy steel shims between the bolts and case. I'm going to start with re-torquing the bolts. Just now thought of that! DOH! Worst case is more plating and gussets. Like Tootal says anybody can do something like this, time to get serious to make it succeed. |

Yalp. Vern, I would pay attention to the bolt for the front strap mount to the engine. I have broke them before. |

I've never had an issue with a muffler strap in 65000 miles. They have never been removed. Most of those I have read about, who have had failing straps, involved those having been removed. That was the main reason I did not want to remove the muffler initially. |

There is a bend in the original side stand tube. I'll have to straighten that first. It has a bow over its length. Should be straight. |

I wasn't talking about the straps. I've broke them because I re-tightened them too tight. Easy to do. I meant the bolt that holds the thing the front strap goes over to the engine. I've broke 2 of those bolts over the years. It is on my preflight checklist. |

I'll add that to mine. However. Make sure you attach the muffler in the proper order - sounds like a broken mount bolt is from mis-torque procedure, not mis-torque strength. I always do mine: 1. front strap 2. rear straps 3. header clamp. Doing the front strap first makes sure the muffler is slid up the header the correct distance. Rear straps second makes sure the muffler is "rotated" to the correct position. I give the header a couple jostles to make sure it's not stressed...and torque the clamp. *So far*, I haven't broken any exhaust bolts... |

That is the order I go in. Always making sure the header clamp and joint with the muffler can move freely before tightening straps. |

Revisited this monster today. Put a little more angle to the angle, and switched up to longer bolts that set up against the original bosses so there is no gap to flex. It is at the correct angle and feels much better thus far. Clamps and pipe are pretty locked in by nature's cruel joke - corrosion. |
