My 24 year old son just got his motorcycle endorsement. He has no interested in any of the HD products. He sat on a 750 and was not impressed. He's saving his pennies for a Honda CBR500. I think that's a pretty good choice for a first bike.

HD, they are not the company for Erik. They had their chance and blew it!
I think the best company, that could challenge, and appreciate Mr. Erik Buell would be Polaris.
They have many interests throughout the motorcycling industry, and into many other power sports, as well.
It would be amazing to see what Erik could come up with, and I'm sure Polaris would better appreciate what he brings to the table...

Harleys suck. Overpriced, underperforming. The people who ride them are interested in making noise so their neighbors and others can see them and be envious. Little do they know everyone thinks they are clowns.

If I had the choice between riding a Harley or not riding, I would stop riding.

You're funny. I ride a Roadster that has over 90,000 miles on the odometer. I've ridden it in all 48 of the contiguous States and I plan to ride it to Tuktoyaktuk on the Arctic Ocean. I would have done it this past year, but I bought a house and that slowed my traveling down while I get the house sorted to my liking.

I am not a Fag in the South Park sense. I ride the Roadster for many reasons. First, I like the way it feels. There is no other bike on the market today that appeals to me more. Second, when I hit the road in 2015, I was doing a Tribute ride for my oldest friend who died in his sleep without warning. He was a die hard Sportster lover.

Also, Harley dealers are everywhere and there are even more independent shops where parts and service are available.

I don't see my bike as either overpriced or underperforming. I'm quite happy with what I got for my money and the bike does exactly what I want. In fact, if I were to buy a new 2018 motorcycle, it would be a Roadster.

And if you see me as a clown, that's just your ignorance showing.

Hey look! There goes a rolling donut. You know what you can do.

Hehe,

I guess I am a clown. My username even confirms it.

I ride a 1995 Sportster 1200, a 2000 Buell S3T and a 2009 Buell XB12r and bought all of them mostly because I love the XL platform. Reliable, low maintenance and easy to work on when needed.

I somewhat agree with you when it comes to the bigger bikes, but I know riders on both ends of the spectrum. Some feel the need to be heard wherever they go, but just as many prefer to keep the HD sound without pegging the DB meter. The Ride HD's because of the riding style for the most part.

Wow Fresnobuell, you really need to make this a life lesson. It's not nice to tell somebody their bike sucks and that they only ride it to make noise. Really? Hmmmm. Like Crusty I've covered the lower 48 states and 6 Provinces of Canada including Newfoundland. I didn't ride all those places just so people could see me! I like my Harley even with some of it's faults. I like my Buell Ulysses too, even with all it's faults! Two totally different bikes but both fun to ride. In fact, I don't know too many bikes that aren't fun to ride! Enjoy your bikes and quit judging people by what they ride, it's none of your business.

Yeah, but we can all agree that XXXXXXX owners are Nazis, right? ; )

Stereotypes.

I actually did a survey, for years, asking owners of BMWs & Audis how many cams their engines had. Both come from the same region of Europe, both have a rep for aggressive drivers.

For Americans, 100% of BMW owners not only knew how many cams they had, but usually knew displacement, number of valves, etc. None of the Audi owners knew. None.

But.... My customers include a lot of exchange students and young doctors, engineers, professionals, mostly from China & India. ( But also Iraq, Iran, Indonesia, etc )

Among THAT group, it was reversed. None of the BMW owners had a clue how many cams their cars had, and ALL the Audi guys did, and were gear/tech heads.

I now wish I'd included profession in that survey, the 3D map might be revealing.

Once Upon A Time, when I was in my 20's, I thought I'd never own a Goldwing, too.... fat & lazy. Today, I still wouldn't, simply because I'm too cheap. : ) but I have been increasingly seeing the attraction over the years. Especially when I have to carry my helmet around to keep it from getting stolen. All of a sudden the huge box on the back makes so much sense.

Tuktoyaktuk on the Arctic Ocean
My brother-in-law and I went to Alaska in 2014 - 9000 mile round trip. The #1 most common bike on the road? Harley Davidson. By far. I was amazed that guys didn't seem to mind that their CVO was covered in calcium chloride to the point that they were unrecognizable. Now that's some serious commitment.
There's a fair amount of HD buyers (notice I didn't say "riders") who are into dressing like a pirate, putting Ride to Live, Live to Ride chrome covers on everything and really, just posing. But there are plenty of real motorcyclists out there too who put serious miles on their bikes. I had 65,000 on my '95 Road King and another 20,000 on my '08 Road Glide before I decided I needed a KTM990Adv to replace the Uly.
I ended up riding by myself as others moved away or aged out so sold that and bought an FJR1300. Very nice bike but no soul. It's up for sale.
Have fun on the Dempster Hwy, Crusty. The Top of the World Highway was the highlight of my trip and, on the whole, I liked the Yukon better than Alaska. I imagine your route will be equally stunning.

I guess the heat in Fresno is getting to somebody's brain, to the point where that person momentarily forgot what it's really all about... why we're here.

Honda, EBR, Harley

Three very different people with a common love for the two-wheeled conveyance.

F*CK HATERS.

With the motorcycling industry in a downturn, we really can't afford infighting. Kumbaya......

All the different groups have their real stereotypes, and I know we are certainly a weird bunch: ), but what do 'they' say about us Buellers?

I found Buell thru Harley Davidson.
I make my living making as many Harleys and Buells, as I can, go faster, quicker.
I do heads.

One of my favorite coffee cups said - Bikers have more fun than people.

HD blew their foot off when they killed Buell, worst move in company history.
They won't get a second chance, I'm sure.

Some riders bash the MOCO because they feel they get no respect from HOG members. HD builds a good product, but I think they consigned themselves to older, more affluent riders for their new product sales target market, and their merchandise marketing for the real profits. Let's face it, older people with money are a reliable customer. Treat them right and they'll keep coming back until you genuinely piss them off.
All of us will with luck be an older rider one day. It might be forty, or it might be eighty, but someday a soft sprung cruiser with a relaxed riding position will work better for our new hips, knees, etc.", and a backrest to provide comfort to a lifetime of earned aches might be nice too. I don't intend anything but a pulled endorsement to keep me from riding. I started on a midweight cruiser, and I may be on one again one day. My bike might change, but the joy of the experience was, and always will be the same.

Interesting thought, in Sturgis a couple years ago I was talking to another rider about the days ride. It turned out we both had rode the needles highway that day. I hated it because of all the slower traffic, I couldn't lean the bike properly, and had to tightrope it through every corner. He hated the corners too, because his pipes dragged around every one. I mentioned that wasn't really a problem for me because I ride a Buell. He began to go on about the scenery and road surface condition, then stopped mid sentence, and said "Buell riders, Y'all are nuts!" ( I think it was a compliment.)

With only around 130,000 Buell/EBR products ever built, we will always be the ones getting the sideways look. Erik Buell products are weird, you need to ride one to get it. I did.
I may not get much respect from the HOG riders, and my tuber may not keep up with the latest out of Japan, but I got friends here. Guess which I value more?

True story...

I was in somewhere Illinois, stopped at a motel. Had dinner at restaurant next door, and had watched as a truck with a trailer pulled up and parked at the motel, a Hog was pulled out of the trailer, and ridden away.

As we walked back across the lot, I saw the trailer locked up, and the rider & buddies drinking beer on the balcony of their room. I paused, looked the trailer over, ( as they watched ) looked up and announced I was jealous of his trailer.

"Whit kind of bike do you have" he asked. "Buell", I replied. "You don't look like a Buell rider" he said. Huh. That's a new one. "What does a Buell rider look like?"

"Younger".

I just laughed.

Don't know why this thread turned into a hissy fit, but I did pose the question to jackasses. HD makes an OK bike if you have the money and like that sort of thing.

HD needs Buell and the man that goes with it. That's all I'm saying.

I rode my XB12R in a VietNam Vets MC funeral procession, just after burying our brother Portagee Ed... I was the only Buell in a sea of Harleys, a few Triumph choppers and/or bobbers.

I stuck out like a sore thumb, and yet never felt more like I belonged somewhere than I did on that day. I got plenty of respect from those guys. After being treated as one of their own, even though I'm just a "hang-around", I could give zero f*cks about what any boutique "biker" thinks of me.

Last night at our ASBN meeting we had four Buells (2-1190SX, 1-XB12X, 1-Firebolt), one Norton, one Ninja, and couple other bikes which I did not see as they were parked elsewhere. No big deal, no tribalism, no stupidity. Yeah, we're a Buell club, but it's really about the people more than anything.
