Addi is doing ok. Today is a little better for me.
Thanks again, everybody for the outpouring of support. It's very therapeutic reading about other people's experiences. |

Still not over the loss of my cat, Hobo Bob a couple of months ago.
I still catch glimpses of him, just around the corner...

My sweetie flat refused to let me name our Rocky "Beavis" instead... it would have worked for the dog.  |

Dang! Just got back from the vet, had Rocky's phenobarbital level checked, anal glands squeezed, and got 2 types of pills for him... almost $200!!
Ouch. But he's worth a mint regardless. |

Losing our pets is so hard!
But sounds like he lived a good life and that shows by his age.
Lost our pom at 14 and 6 months later our malmute at 13. Now have two yorkies that are 13 and a two yr old also. But the time is coming again I feel. |

Very sorry about your pup, Matthew.
I think it's a sad side effect of growing older; you realize a lot quicker that no pet is "permanent". I've seen so many people (my dad included) that always had a dog around say "no more" at some point. When my dad got to be about 75 years old, he said he didn't want any more pets. I imagine his decision was about 50% he didn't want us to have to deal with a dog when he couldn't and 50% he didn't want to lose another pet so close to the end of his life.
I hope I don't get that way; I can't imagine not having some kind of pet. |

True, Hugh. My sweetie says she won't have another one after Rocky, but I'll override that.
As long as we ourselves can look after a great dog/cat/etc., we'll have pets.
I did have a pet rock... and not one, but two Tribbles. |

No more warm blooded pets for us... we've got about 10 more years with Addi and then we'll be able to lock the front door on a Friday night and disappear for the weekend without having to worry about what's going on at the house.
Maybe 20-ish years down the road, we'll get another.
I'm doing better each day, and Addi seems to be adjusting well enough. It's our youngest daughter's last day at school today, so they will have each other for company in the coming weeks. |

I always tell folks without pets that birds and fish are the easiest. Years ago I had two female hand-raised cockatiels, never trimmed their flight feathers- take them out of the cage, lots of fun, put them back in, they're furniture. I could leave them for 3-4 days with plenty of food and water, NBD. Very economical to boot. Folks think they want a male parrot and teach it to talk, but they're very likely to revert to wild again even if hand-raised.
I miss having birds, but with my two dogs, they'd be snacks pronto. |

My old riding buddy was as tough as nails and for his 85 years, he still is! But whenever it was time to take his dog to the final ride to the vet he always made his wife do it. |

Years ago I had a red Cocker Spaniel named Joe. We also had 4 cockatiels. Drove the dog crazy. One day one of my cockatiels tries to fly to the TV but doesn't make it because of the clipped wings. Joe was on her in a flash. Didn't bite her, just held her down with his paws and pulled out all of her tail feathers and began chewing them like gum.

That's funny. When I was a kid we had a black Cocker Spaniel named Midnight. He was really a bird dog. My mom made a feather dress for one of my sisters to wear in a play and he jumped and he jumped until he was able to drag it off the hangar and eat it. We also kept a parakeet overnight to give to my grandma for a surprise and he jumped up against the cabinet trying to get it so much he tore all the veneer off the cabinet. He loved his birds. A bird could have landed on my good boy Max's head and he wouldn't have noticed. Now, rabbits, that was different thing. He looooooved him some rabbits. Poor rabbits. |

The first Christmas after my mom married my stepdad, we were working on Christmas dinner... back then I only had one bird, Plato. Of course she was free to fly at will most of the time. My stepdad was working on a cake batter... guess where the bird flew to??
He's always been a terse, kinda strict kinda guy- I promptly jumped in the car to go to the ONLY place in town open, got some new cake batter. Bird back in cage... |

One of these days I'll set up an aquarium with all the bubble toys I like. Sunken side wheel ship, diver, clam, etc. Colorful gravel & a big fairyland castle.
No fish. Just tell people they are shy and hide in the castle.
I'm at the afraid the pet will outlive me stage, and plan two weeks camping without a care except getting the lawn mowed. |

Darrell just turned ten in March, and he's slowing down a lot, getting a little crotchety too, LOL! I'm dreading losing him when the time comes, but it's so worth it. So much joy, love, and adventure.
I currently have nowhere I want to go that he can't come along, but we did take a few years break in between losing our Border Collie, Roger at 16 years old, then Josie the Aussie Shepherd before adopting Darrell (Michele brought him home, snatched him off the street to find him a good home). I resisted for at least six months, but the dog stuck to me like glue. Best dog ever. The freedom to just go was nice. We'll likely do similarly next go round.
Remember all the great times. |

Cleaned my 55G freshwater fishtank today, before I went to work. Work whooped me.
Came home to a good looking tank, just fed the angels, the leaf fish, and the tetras. A nice thing
about cleaning a fishtank is using the results on my outdoor plants.
My 4 veiled angels are as big as my hand now... maybe one day they'll carry me off with them.
I've grown a few fish to the point where I could sell them to my local aquarium... 6/7 YO fishies!
Once had an albino tiger Oscar, dead nuts the University of Tennessee orange/white, you could pet the fish. |

As a youth, I worked in various tropical fish stores, and at one point I had 22 fish tanks in my living room...
2x 240 gal
2x 180 gal
4x 55 gal
6x 30 gal
8x 10-15 gal
Seriously stressing the load limits of my upstairs apartment...
I was the guy at the fish store who would go to customer's homes and rescue/extract the fish that had gotten too big to handle.
I couldn't believe people would give these fish away! Pacu, plecostamus, monodactylus, oscars and other various aggressive cichlids. I was in fish heaven with giant aquatic zoo creatures in my living room.
I often think it would be nice to have fish again, but I get so far into it, I'd have to give up some other hobbies.
Of all the fish I ever had, my top three favorites based on the personality of the fish were:
1: Monodactylus (sebae or argentus)
2: Rocio cichlid (Jack Dempsey)
3: Echidna eel (Snowflake eel) - salt water |

We recently lost our small breed beagle, Daisy.
She pepped up for a few days when the wife put ibuprofen in her food, as she had a hard time getting around. She passed soon after. During the same time a lady crossed three lanes in front of me to make a turn and took me out. I had to bury her with an arm in a sling. Not a good time. |
