Hey out there- me not knowing the exact geography of the islands, and Kilauea erupting big, how's life? Sure hope everyone is staying safe... read in the news that a natural gas storage facility is being emptied due to danger from the volcano. Talk about "Big Bada Boom"!!
On the plus side, also read that lately the sunsets are awesome, and some bioluminescent waters are happening. Still, glad I'm here in E TN, no seismic worries, but I'd like to visit someday...
Just heard from a friend vacationing near the lava flows (not near enough to get evacuated) and being from California, he is used to a couple of earthquakes a year, but said the sheer number, even though they are small, has everyone on edge and is freaking out a lot of folks.
86129squids, Just got off work and saw your post, thanks for asking.
Me and mine are fine. We live on the Kona, or West side, and the Puu O'o crater is on the Hilo, or East side. Straight line it is about 75 miles away and the lava flow is heading away from us. We do have to contend with VOG (Volcanic Organic Gas) or natural smog. The winds are very still right now so it is very hazy.
The Kilauea crater is also starting to drain and has sent an ash plume in the air yesterday because rocks fell in the lava. If the lava goes below the water table and rocks fall in again it could cause a much larger explosion and ash cloud.
I do have friends that live in the Leilani subdivision and have not been able to get into their houses to collect their belongings due to lava and sulfur dioxide gas. I am hoping that they can get in there soon.
In fact I am going over to the Hilo side this weekend to referee in the soccer championships and will be about 12 - 15 miles from the vent and flowing lava.
Here is a picture of me from about 2 years ago when the Puu O'o crater started flowing lava to the ocean. Was a 3 hour hike in. The crater in on top of the hill about a mile behind me and you can see it flowing down the side toward where I am standing.
