I installed new grips on the Uly using the adhesive tape system used for golf clubs...how much different can they be? Well...all was A-OK until I put on the heated grips! The heat loosened the adhesive so much, they almost slid off. Fortunately, I noticed, and did not use heated grips. I have since removed the old adhesive (easy, with the heat turned on for 5 minutes!) and re-installed with proper grip adhesive. Live and learn and pass it on. billg | ||

Reminds me of having a Heck of a time getting my first set off from my first dirt bike. I cut them peeled them off in strips and still had chunks to cut and grind off. Thinking that was extreme overkill I used a lesser glue. All was good until they got wet on a dirt ride. Standing up on a dirt bike,riding through some rough stuff, I can tell you having a grip slide off will put you down fast! | ||

I've been using Aqua Net hairspray my whole life. Works great. Got it under my heated grips now, haven't had any issues. | ||

I have never had to use adhesive on my bike or motorcycle grips? I clean the surface with alcohol wipes let it dry and use an air compressor to help install the grips. Never had an issue. | ||

I usually wrap electrical tape around the bars before the hairspray. That way if they ever have to come off you can cut the electrical tape to clean things up. Usually. Put heated grips on the 1190 and used the adhesive they came with. On a track day, they started sliding around during the last session - no heat being used at the time. Came home and redid to the electrical tape/hairspray and no issues since. | ||

I put a new set on my EBR about a month ago. I tried the compressed air trick this time. Clean bars well, then get a nozzle for your compressed air hose, and squirt air between the grip and the handlebar, gradually working it into position. They seem to be thoroughly stuck in position. Compressed air worked well for getting the old grips off, too. | ||

Standing up on a dirt bike,riding through some rough stuff, I can tell you having a grip slide off will put you down fast! Thanks Vern for reminding me of a very painful face plant!!  | ||

Yeah, reminds me of landing a dirt jump on a bike in my youth, when the grip slipped right off. I can still see the scar. The hair spray and air compressor are great tricks to know. On anything that will go off road, with potential for wetness, even just sweat, I like to bind them down with safety wire too. I even added safety wire to the pegs on my XB just to give me a bit more grip with my boots. The pegs were wearing a bit too smooth for my taste. | ||

I also go 'au natural' with the grips. The bars and rubber have to be CLEAN though. Any grease and it's trouble. Air nozzle them on, safety wire the inside and outside and I've never had an issue with dirt, heat, or anything. They don't even twist! | ||

Griplock or superglue will work. Heated grips are a problem for adhesives, and IIRC, many of them index inside the switch housing to solve this. Also, in addition to compressed air, some penetrating oil like PB blaster helps for removal. Factory installed HD grips (clutch side) are easiest to just cut off with a razor blade. | ||

I've always been an Alberto VO5 man myself.I never liked running my hands through hair sprayed with the stuff but it works great on grips! I've had the same can since the mid 70's. | ||

I have had one bad experience with grips. I did not install them but riding a friends skidoo he had put grips on it off a mini bike or something. We were ditch banging and jumping driveways when 5 ft in the air i was holding the grips not the bars. I went face first in the snow on the far side wearing my motocross helmet which acted like a scoop and proceeded to direct all the snow right into my jacket. I then realized there were two sleds directly behind me with fully studed tracks. Luckily they hammered the gas and cleared me!!! I was lucky there no injuries just pride. | ||

Something else that doesn't work (just to take this along the lines of the "just because" thread - any applicable random thoughts)... Don't try and put a thumbprint on a spinning table saw blade. Just sayin'. But...the hardwood floors in the foyer look good (I didn't bleed on the top of any of the wood)! | ||

Been a long time since I installed any grips, but I remember something about black electrical tape and gasoline. Last ones I did were Buell heated grips. The throttle side is already bonded and the left grip screws to the bars. Z | ||

That snowmobile thing....in the 70s the handle bars were a simple post coming up with a T cross bar. Mine was a SkiDoo 640 TNT. Hauling butt coming down a ski slope where I worked that T broke off. The brake handle was still in my hand all I could do was squeeze. It was aimed at the lodge. Brakes then were an afterthought. It stopped just feet from the picture window of the lodge. That was,As bad as the steering wheel that came off from my race car at 70 mph. | ||
