Hey guys, just wanted to say thanks for all the help over the past decade. The resources here are fantastic and I hope the community keeps the name exciting for a long time. After 40k mi on the CR, I'm turning her over to a coworker for a steal. My back just can't take the long hauls and commuting anymore, even with the high bars installed. That said, if you have any ideas for a used bike under $10k that'll compare to what I'm looking at right now, I'm all ears! I'm going to be commuting and taking trips with the wife, so sport touring / adventure is the flavor. - Yamaha FJ-09 Tracer, finding brand new for $8500. - BMW R1200GS or R1200R, harder to find with acceptable miles, but they're out there - Triumph Tiger Explorer, seems to be a great bike though I've never ridden one. Can be found for my price range in the 2012-2013 vintage. - Anything else? Again, ya'll rock. Keep being awesome, and thanks again. |

You are going to have a blast . . . . . and welcome to those of us who've morphed from " knee draggin' to saddle bagging' " Be mindful that making the change from Buell or EBR to another brand of bike should not diminish your participation here. The depth and breadth of experience is what has made Badweb, arguably, one of the most effective and content rich motorcycle forums on the internet. I've turned my lustful eyes to old stuff. I've found that for the price of a new BMW tourer . . . I can buy 6 museum quality restored things like a Triumph Bonneville, BSA 441 Victor and a Honda CL77 305 Scrambler. I'll never catch anyone . . . I'll never pass anyone but . . . like to collection of guitars that serve primarily as momentos of wonderful memories . . . I love this stuff. My most recent acquisition is a pristine 1960 MGA. A fellow never looses his love for the first car he ever stole . . . so I gave in to my lust. I'll tell you a secret . . . . the MGA, to me, is just as fun as the significant other's former "Bill Gates" car . . the Porsche 959. The MGA and the Cushman . . . .if they have fuel, spark and compression run . . . no fancy schmancy systems, no ECM . . . nada . . . In fact, I am getting a little concerned that the positive ground Lucas Electrics have, to date, been flawless. So . . please stick around . . . chronicle your search, your journey and your adventures. We're lucky to have you here . . . Court |

+1 for the Triumph. I had an '01 Sprint ST, with the 955 ci triple... LOVED the motor! Overall, it was a great bike, especially after Vern did the British Racing Green makeover. Still kinda miss that thing. If that Yammie works out, IIRC that's a triple as well- something about the inline 3 configuration is just dope. The torque and the music is quite addictive. |

The resources here are fantastic and I hope the community keeps the name exciting for a long time. Badweb is a true jewel in a sea of granite pebbles. There is no place on the internet quite like it. The people here are in a class of their own. I am both proud and honored to belong here. And Court's right; you don't need to leave just because you won't be riding a Buell. Find the bike that speaks to you and let us know all about it. Your experiences might help one of us with our next bike purchase. |

I know this is slanted.....but have you tried a low mileage garage kept Uly? Sounds like it would plug right into your needs......you know it would be cheap. Ha ha ha ha ha ha. Damn shame one of the best all around motorcycles ever made.....never mind. Comon back with you find, check into any Buell event. You will still be welcomed ! |

Thanks for all the support! I could never leave BadWeb--I'll always check back and chime in when I can. I know I wasn't the most active member outside of my machine always needing some encouragement to run correctly. Someday I hope to be in that position, Court. I'd love to collect maybe five to ten bikes and have them in different states of restoration. I need to get some more brands and experience under my belt ... in my decade of riding I've only known Buell! I HAVE looked at Ulysses--that's actually the first bike I started looking for when my serious searching began. As I was browsing through the pages on SearchTempest and CycleTrader though, I kept getting pulled in other directions. The Uly just doesn't do it for me at the moment, probably due to me being Buell'd out. Plus, I already have thousands of miles of smiles with that engine in the XBR. I'm definitely going to test ride a Tiger Explorer 1200 before I decide due to the increased quality and kit over an FJ-09. I'll keep ya'll up to date on where the search takes me. |

Triumphs I know a thing or two about. Try the 800 Tiger as well. If you want something with a bit more pep, the Sprint line up is kind of addicting. |

I just can’t get past all the plastic with a full fairing. Never have. I’m sure one day I’ll appreciate the wind protection of having all of that around me, but for now I want to see as much of the engine as possible. I’m leaning more towards the air-cooled R1200R before they changed the front suspension, and a new FJ-09. All options at this point have hard panniers included. And hand warmers. Oh man—hand warmers. Maryland mornings are crisp. |

I put heated grips on my Z about 2 years ago... after so many years of getting different gloves and freezing my knuckles. The solution was right in front of me the whole time. Best $18 I ever spent on any bike. |

Had the pleasure of meeting Jeepinbueller Several years back. Nice young man with a good head on his shoulders . I'll Miss seeing your bike leaving work as I now work down the rd from you. I only ride to work on Saturdays just because Of traffic. As the others have said , remain a member and keep in mind that this is not a single brand web group . |

..+1 to what Crusty said.Find what makes ya happy and check in from time to time.I'm kind of in the same delimma.Living on only Social Security Disability and the medical bills grow out of my fixed income has put me at a crossroads as to whether or not to keep the Buell( '00 X-1 Lightning). I belong to the Christian Motorcycle Association and since we ride and use our bikes as "platforms " to reach out to fellow riders..." changing one heart at a time" about christianity. Really a tough decision there.Don't want to, but if i have to ,then so be it.LT |

A later model FJR is a good choice, I think they got cruise control around 2015. The Super Tenere is an excellent choice, lighter, more upright seating, many choices in aftermarket bags, Cruise control after 2015, and, you can find 2017 models new on cycletrader for around $12000 I also have an R1200RS, and if you are having back problems, that, or the R, would not be a good choice. The RT is more upright, but weighs 80lbs more. |

Not sure of your height, but if you are seriously thinking about the R1200R, just be aware that they are not for people with long inseams. I'm 6'2" with a 34" inseam. I swapped bikes with a riding buddy for an afternoon and my knees/hips were killing me worse than any of my old crotch rockets ever did. I would legitimately compare it to riding my S1 in the lower body comfort department. The seat is obviously better, but there was just zero leg room for me. I had a R1100RT that I retired after ~135k miles. I loved that bike and rode it Coast to coast. My only gripe was that I couldn't get enough airflow to my lower body when it was hot out, and I liked to go places that I shouldn't have ridden it. I replaced it with a R1200GS and couldn't be happier. I have just under 40K miles on that now. The comfort on either is superb once you replace the stock seat. I routinely do 600 mile days when traveling and rode the GS home from CO to PA in 2 consecutive 1k mile days. Oh yeah....and the heated hand grips. I don't ever want another bike without them. At least not one that I plan on riding a lot. They are obviously nice when its really cold, but damn they are nice on those cool mornings when I really don't want to lug along my heavy gloves. |

I recently moved to a 2016 Honda Africa Twin from my old faithful Buell S3T. I was able to get a new left over for $10,700 out the door in Wisconsin. There are a few things that I'm working on fixing (taller windscreen is the main issue). But it's super comfy and a value at that price (IMHO) |

So after a lot of internet perusing, I've found that all of the R1200R's are a bit too far away for the price and their mileage. Plus, none of them have bags. I've talked to a couple of local dealers on brand new 2016 and 2017 FJ-09's. With some aftermarket hard panniers and heated grips, I'll still come out to about $9800, out the door. That's hard for me to beat right now with the 5 yr extended warranty. |

Can't argue with that. Since it seems HD and also most of the European motorcycle companies have gone the route of larger/uber expensive bikes. Its really nice to see the Japanese brands starting to flood the market with some really affordable solid smaller and mid range bikes. Hope for the future, as the majority of the population wouldn't be interested in a 1200+ CC monstrosity as a daily motor bike. I have done very little touring since my kids were born and have been considering ditching my GS for something smaller to play with. Either a small dual sport or something like that FJ-09. I just can't seem to bring myself to do it. |

I have been keeping my eyes out for a cheapo dual purpose bike but for some reason, they are all stupid expensive. I want something I don't have to feel bad about throwing in a ditch! Ideally an old XT350 or something. |

+1 on the Tracer. Wife and I did 2800+ miles in January -February on both islands of New Zealand on the Tracer, all around a very good bike, comparable in a lot of ways to the Uly. The price you quoted plus 5 year warranty makes it a bit more attractive than a low mileage Uly. . ., but no Buell induced "Perma-Grin". Still a good bike though, but not the same "soul" as a Buell, if you get my meaning. . . Best of luck. Outside of Franz Josef (note Buell / Vanson jacket)

I pulled the trigger. After a three hours each way with trailer in tow, I drove up to State College, PA and picked up a used 2016 FJ-09 with 3,006 miles. With a very small scratch on the tank and a plug in the rear tire, I walked out of there with the bike strapped down for $7k. I’ll have to add some brackets and saddlebags, and throw an Oxford heated grip kit on, but she’s mine and for much less than I would’ve spent otherwise. So excited! I’m visiting my brother in Denver this weekend, so once I get back I’ll be on the road. At least that’ll give this sucky MD spring weather some time to move on out.
