I'm ready for spring as well . . . . I have a hell of a commute that takes me . . . on about a 10 day rotation . . . from one extreme to the other . . . I LOVE the snow and my work . . . but it never takes me long to "readjust" to warm weather.

One of the problems is that we have a neighbor who makes flying VERY tough . . . . at the farm up North . . . he is right there . . . so we got screwed on the hot air balloons last summer . . . . at the farm down south . . . there he is again . . . no drones and private aviation becomes a nightmare.
The upside is . . . . .we have great security at both farms. |

I love snow too, but our area has been in a weird weather pattern the past few years where we haven't been getting that much. Its enough to make a mess, but not enough to make things look pretty. Its been just enough where you have to shovel, but not enough to make it worth breaking out the snow blower. The last 2 storms were a dusting of snow followed by a solid layer of ice. That sucked |

Thank you . . . . I am REALLY lucky in that I live and get to work in some incredible photogenic places . . . .makes it fun. I sent my Mom, in Kansas, some pics the other day . . . one from the driveway . . . the neighbors barn . . . work . . . coming home to a double rainbow over the horse barn and a shot of the Catskills . . . .
If you aren't familiar with New York's Hudson Valley and the Tewksbury Township area (where Trump's Club is) you are missing some of the most gorgeous and well kept secrets in America.
Gorgeous days and music in Woodstock at night . . . not, all-together, a bad place to hide.
If Elfapalooza 2018 comes off . . . . it'll be a hoot n' holler. |

Ever get over to Stamford? Mt. Utsayantha is where they've run the regional hang gliding meet. Nothing special for the area, a typical summer escape town where the folk from NYC would go to escape the smell of hot horse manure. Some good restaurants and century old + hotels. The Catskills are lovely year round. Jobs can be rare. The riding, after the spring rains wash away the salt drifts, fun.
I'm further west in the Finger Lakes region. Easy to get lost as there are multiple "East (or West ) Lake Road"s running the shores of each lake. Unmarked seasonal farm roads running the ridges, & rare little dives through passes that still have smugglers names.
I haven't landed next to a moonshine hollow in New York, ( I have in PA ) but I've flown over a few. Running ridges I've flown over a monastery famous for bread, and their hidden nudist colony neighbor. If you run out of lift there it's polite to strip down to carry out to the admin buildings to call for pickup. DAMHIK. |

I've been up on Glacier Point in Yosemite when the hang gliders launch into the abyss. Pretty cool but not so much so that I'd want to try it. |

You don't actually start the sport there. That's more the place you spend years getting good enough to go.
As a "sport" hang gliding is lame, because the action takes place far away from spectators and involves invisible forces that can demolish airliners. Just putting cameras on and following the gliders with a helicopter, is ok for speed racing, where you run through gates on a mountain, because it's a short course and geographically contained. Normal competition involves taking off when your weather guess tells you, disappearing over the horizon, and racing to goal, which could be 150 miles away, or where you started if it's a triangle course. Nothing you'd watch on tv.
I've spent the whole day as a landing judge, with a lawn chair, cooler, umbrella, sunscreen, stopwatch and radio. Nothing, all day long. Then 5 gliders come land in a half hour, wires singing as they cross the line.
I'm happy to do the work, they're happy to challenge the sky, and ESPN doesn't have an announcer who understands meteorology, aerodynamics, and how hard it is to fly 100 miles without an engine.
So it goes. |

Well . . by golly . . there is one I have not seen !
We've got a federal grant to do some neat stuff with drones and I'm working on a totally crazy idea I've had (think of a "drone garage" every 3rd structure with the ability to have a security incident response) lately . . .
But . . the flamethrower is freaking awesome.
I have been told by the better half, looking over my shoulder . . that I am not allowed to have one. She is bringing into question my ability to act like a "grown up" and use it responsibly . . . I confess it's already set off a series of ideas on how to deal with a difficult neighbor . . .
