Hey all, throw me $.02: My sister and I have agreed that it's time to put our grandmother's heirloom jewelry on the market. My scammer radar is gonna be maxed out- I'll probably only meet with interested parties AT THE BANK, after I've accessed my lockbox.

My best notion is to write an A to Z Craigslist ad, with photos of the items and photos of the most current appraisal, along with the one I have that was done back in the 80's. I'm not familiar with Facebook Marketplace, might look into that as well.

I'll not realize near full value by selling to a jeweler, so it'll have to be an individual. I'll have ONE chance to do this right. So, what say ye, my friends?

As usual, thanks in advance for any advice.

You may rather consider a live (or managed online) auction. The auctioneers usually know how to get good exposure to the right bidders. Take a look at auctionzip.com

Have it appraised then figure you'll be lucky to get half that value. Unless it's a rare piece of Tiffany or something very unique, might be a tough sell.

Yeah Strok, I gots my work cut out. I've spoken with the guy who did my appraisal, he reiterated that if I try to sell to a jeweler, they'll have to short me big on the appraised value- obviously, they've gotta make $$$ too.

I also talked with Case Antiques, the local auction house that handled my weird chair a while back. I'm going to have them evaluate things, might work with them- good peeps. (Want to see what rich folks buy? Check out their website... yeesh!) Still, everyone wants their cut.

I'll figure it out. Bottom line is that neither I nor my sister benefit from the jewelry just sitting in a lock box. If I ever get around to marrying my honey, she'll be fine with a Cracker Jack box ring.

Thanks for the penny pairs, friends! Heck, if anyone here knows anyone wanting to tie the knot with some seriously nice ice, holler. Maybe word of mouth would work...

Is it just Diamonds. If it is gold you can melt it down and either make something for you or your honey or keep the gold as an investment. I would think you could sell diamonds to people looking for an engagement ring or something like that. You might have more luck if it is a loose diamond and they can pick out their own ring for it. We took a ring and a couple of earrings my wife got from her grandmother, had the diamonds taken out and the gold melted down and then used to make her wedding band with the diamonds set in the wedding band.

All that is pure speculation though .. All I know about jewelry is how much I spent on my wife's engagement ring.

I'd avoid craigslist like the plague for jewelry. Got a cheap car, or some old kitchenware? Craigslist. Antique/heirloom jewelry? Go a more legit sales route.

Do some of your own research as well. Every piece of "real" jewelry has a makers mark on it somewhere. Chase those down, see if they're "worth anything", or if they're just "nice looking" corner-store stuff.

Also...check with funeral homes. They see a LOT of this stuff, maybe they have a reliable appraiser/resource you can contact.

Used to be you could get 75% or a little more from a jeweler.

Thanks youn's... all good advice. A best friend just re-did his wedding band and his deceased wife's together for a really nice new piece. The value of the gold and diamonds is easier to determine than the design and provenance. I'll be talking with him and perhaps his jeweler as well.

Once I excavate the appraisal from my desk, I'll be fine.

Hey! It has value. It will pay you a lot more than a $20 hr job. Take the time to do the diligence.

Most people put a lot of effort into working to earning money. It seems when they get gifted a valuable item, since it is free to them, the quick short money is their goal. With ten hours of research if you gain $2000 that equates to $200 per hour.

Avoid personal on line sales like CL or FB. Unless you deal there a lot you can expose yourself to bad things. You sure don't want to advertise where it is.

A percentage paid to a reputable professional in that field will be the safe bet.

I agree. CL is the wrong venue. It's the bargain hunters place. FB is useful for a business. A buddy does his sales by word of mouth & FB. Custom Armor at a reasonable price.

You don't want your personal online presence mixed with a one off business. You'll get inquiries for years.

My Facebook page states I don't pay attention to it, so if I ignore your request don't feel bad. No photo. Never posted anything. Probably half the posts last I looked were from my Mother pimping Hillary and accusing Trump of racist alt-witchcraft. She made me promise never to argue her posts. Don't read them either. One of my friends daily posts his fitness challenge. I think he's doing two minute miles now. ( I really don't read any of it )

The only reason I have a FB page is that many small businesses use it and have no other website.

When it began, I complained that if the service is free, you are the product.

Ditto Google. A buddy drops by and searched for dog stairs for his car. ( older Great Pyrenees ) now I get crippled dog ads.

Facebook is the devil.

I own a small audio-production business. I do just FINE, with no use nor need for Farcebook.

I only have an account because I created one in '08, when I was in the hospital for 3 months after my wreck. Bedridden, it was the closest I could get to having a life for a while. Got out of the hospital? Haven't logged in since. Don't miss it one bit.

Yesterday I deleted Messenger and Facebook from my iPhone.
I'm really starting to dislike Zuckerberg's baby.

I often use my grocery store discount card to help out the person in front of me in line who doesn't have one. Partly to be nice, but every time I get a silent smile because I've messed with their algorithm. They target me with ads for stuff I would never buy.

It actually gives me a new way to play "What do they eat?", where you glance at other people's shopping carts or loaded belt to see what they are buying. Sometimes it makes me think I'd like some chunky monkey ice cream too, and sometimes I get to laugh at their food choices. Now when I get ads for quinoa or rice cakes, I can smirk at the poor fellow who's better half is on a diet, and now he is too.

Facebook goes further. Mention in a comment that you like Turkish style coffee, and by the next day you get Turkish coffee maker ads. It's like they are listening and using a computer to read your mind.

Actually, that's just what's going on.

If you've got any of the "servant" toys like an Echo Dot, they may or may not actually be listening to you. How would you tell? graph your traffic?

Joe -
Lightly press and hold any icon until they start wiggling.
Touch the "x" on the apps you want to nix.

As expected we have somewhat hijacked squids thread...
That said, I don't have a smart phone(refuse to pay for data), so my pc is my conduit to the interwebs.
To that end I use Opera browser; it has really great ad filters built in, if that's not good enough. You can add "Extensions" to enhance ad filtering.

Squids, if you were in Vegas, you could always drop by by The Prawn Stars pawn shop...

Yeah, it doesn't let me X out the FB app completely. Like it's system-wired. I know the standard hold/X process and I've removed the *icon*...but if I go into settings it still shows FB, twatter, flickr, vimeo...crap I don't need, want, nor use.
