Just got a message from my bank that my card has been used... Just in time for the holidays. At least they are sending the replacement to me by Thursday. F'ing thieves!

Now I get to update all my automatic payments.

Lame A$$holes, sorry to hear man. I was in a store recently, the cashier had some new gadget that drew in the cash bills and scanned them- I asked why use that and not the counterfit markers, she said that crooks have found a way to defeat them as well!

Anyhoo, happy Fri((&^#@!kin holidays to all of ya too. ; )

Bah.

Make sure to check gas pumps. Pay-at-the-pump is a common skimmer location, and so is an actual ATM (believe it or not). If it looks like some sort of appendage where you slide your card in...pass. Pay inside. I use Bank of America and their ATM's have a proprietary-shaped backlit blue card slot, impossible to add a skimmer to those.

Maybe I'll start carrying gig cash and paying cash for stuff during the "season of holiday giving"...just so I'm not giving unintentionally!

I've been through that twice.

Both times major corporations got hacked, nothing personal. Sam's club and Home Despot. By personal I mean my card only with readers etc.

The advice on being cautious with card readers is realistic. I do use a card at gas pumps and haven't seen any odd readers. I'd like to think I'd notice.

To keep from budget busting I use cash mostly. Psychology of spending changes with credit cards.

I do use credit for gas to simplify filling up and to use discount cards. Sam's doesn't take cash at the gas pumps, the attendants just have a shelter to keep an eye on things with no register or sale items.

I never use debit cards for anything but cash withdrawals. Legal protection is different on credit & debit cards.

My phone also has zero to do with spending. It knows no credit card or bank account. It's just a phone and surfing tool. Steal or lose my phone and you get phone numbers and links to useless websites. ( can't see a stranger caring about NASA publications or badweb )

The kindle app can access my Amazon account to order books but that's only for kindle sales and, again, the system set up with the card info blocked at Amazon's end. It's not in the phone.

Ebay robbed me for $110.00 in fees... for a store I don't have.

I have a business credit card account...multiple credit card numbers. Each business I let store a credit card number on my account gets a different card number. Amazon has a different number than Netflix which has a different number than the power company, etc. This way, I not only know who lost my info, I only have to update one biller with a new number.

" Legal protection is different on credit & debit cards."

Depends on the bank. My debit card is covered the same way my credit card is, but the debit card has a single transaction limit and daily withdrawal limit. If I leave town I need to notify my bank or my debit card will not work. Heck when I changed jobs, the first time I tried to fill up with gas I got a call as I was standing next to the pump to verify it was me using it.

Keep track of the expenses you incur due to this issue. At the very least they can be deducted from your taxes if you itemize and if they catch the perps you can sue to recover your losses. Plus pain and suffering. LOL!

I believe as long as your debit card has the VISA/MC logo on it, it's treated like a credit card as far as liability is concerned.

I've set the daily transaction limit on my debit "credit" card to $1. If the number gets out, sure, I'm not liable, but in the interim, I don't have the money in my account. I'd have an ATM card instead if they'd give me one, but they won't.

My Credit Union told me the same thing, I had to have a debit card. I insisted that I didn't want one. Then they told me the truth. They couldn't get me an ATM card TODAY! If I wanted an ATM card it would have to be mailed to me. I told them that was fine and I got it a few days later. You might ask again and see if they can mail you one.

They told me it wasn't even an option. No biggie. They can only spend $1 a day, and, in all likelihood, anything they fraudulently purchase will be over that and consequently declined.

It's a BoA card, and they have been pretty good about it. What bugs me is that they still won't allow personal use of refillable cards like they have for businesses. If I had a card for gas, and card for recurring, and card for internet purchases, I'd be able to narrow things down.

I should get all my money back because I responded within half an hour of the alert they sent and filed a claim, but it is still over $400 tied up for weeks while things are fixed.

If they don't cover it all, every dime will go to another company.

One of my cards was used to purchase a $400 tent. Someone created an email in my name to sign up to be able to divert the shipment, but didn't get it done in time.

The credit card company was pretty flippant about it, the company that sold it said to keep it...in hopes they'd be able to make a claim, the police said it happens all the time...and they're basically just going to document the event, and the email host basically didn't care. It was a great time all around.

I know the best way to protect your money.

Keep it out of the banks. Mess up your credit score. Max out your cards. If you are broke stay broke.

Then they will at least have to get off their butts to rob you.
