I miss the old jungle gyms with the sand full of broken beer bottles the high school kids left behind. Rubber recycled tire padding? Hah! 2 stories tall, but plenty of bars to bounce off of on the way down. Heck, swing sets are lethal. I sometimes consider that my parents would be arrested today for the stuff I did, considered completely normal ( for the area ) at the time. Riding bicycles miles away from town, building igloos and snow forts, tree houses unsafe at any age, several paragraphs redacted in case the statute of limitations don't apply. | ||

Hehe, My elementary school was the model of unsafe structures. We had the 2 story jungle gym with an equally impressive 2 story jungle dome, along with the 10' monkey bars and spinning rings. A tornado came through and lopped off the 4th story of the school, crushing both jungle gyms. They mostly rebuilt them but left the school 3 stories. If I shaved my head, I would scare some folks with the scars I have from that playground. Most of the g-g-grey matter was put back. | ||

There is no way that hang gliding would be allowed if it began today. Skip over the fact that the early 1970's gliders were unsafe by modern standards. ( yes, there are standards & a manufacturer association that does testing. Better testing and smarter than Vietnam era jets. ) The first snowflakes to trip and skin a knee at the training hill would sue any school out of business. Only the history and reputation of a 50 year old sport keep that from happening today. Judge, "so you went hang gliding and stubbed your toe? And you want to sue? Go take swimming lessons and come back after you drown, moron.". The release forms to take hang gliding classes are more pages than a Light Sport Aircraft License written exam. ( not actually true. But close. ) Actually hang gliding predates the Wright brothers by decades, but fell out of favor after "real" airplanes were invented, until the late 1960's when Francis Rogallo's flexible kite design was tested by NASA as a Gemini capsule landing device and the military built flex wing "jeeps" and downed pilot rescue gear using that design. The civilian use began concurrently as the new wing was absurdly simple to build and transport, & worked better that 19th century designs. Today's equivalent are the drone based human Cuisinart machines being touted as the next wave of personal transport. But today it's a Kick Starter to make a revolutionary new fortune and few actual flying machines, while I built my first hang gliders in the garage and so did hundreds of others. Then flew them. | ||

Late 79, early 80; I ran into a group of people out in the mojave desert that were taking turns on a hang glider. They let me have a go. I landed going down-wind and got dragged a small distance across the desert floor. What a hoot except for a few cacti. I remember after a huge snow storm when I was young; the snow was piled high along a country road. Almost reached the power lines. We kids would climb the snow and leap to the power lines. Then swing on the lines a few times till jumping out into the snow. (Message edited by Ourdee on November 17, 2017) | ||

Started flying in 1975 with a Batso knock off made from wood stair rail stock & a polyethylene pool cover. Fly every day & wreck it then rebuild for the next day. Second glider was plans built Eipper Flexi Floater with a factory made sail. Aircraft aluminum alloy and stainless cable, dacron sail cloth. Then a Flexi II, test flying a bunch of gliders from multiple manufacturers, ( dealers assembled gliders from shipping length then test flew ) ..built a few from original design. Proair 180, Wills Wing Duck. Quicksilver, Pterodactyl, Falcon ultralights..... Conventional sailplanes, airplanes from Citabria to Beaver. I've skipped a few. Now only have one glider, which is in need of museum display, like my knees.  Currently working on a FAA Pt103 design. Uh, yeah. I've been a pilot. | ||

A follow up on the playground pic.  I don't know if "mugabe's Moron" is fair, it's the military that did a fairly quiet coup. Now if it's "the new boss, same as the old boss" or an attempt at getting back to normal? Good question. The Guardian says it's just new boss. https://www.theguardian.com/world/2017/nov/17/anti-mugabe-protest-planned-in-harare-as-president-clings-on Hard to believe, but things can get worse. Look at Danny Glover & Sean Penn's favorite dictatorship, Venezuela. If you are pessimistic, expect high turnover on a series of power hungry folk, and an acceleration of the hunger and poverty. The Guardian uses the lovely phrase Praetorian Politics, where the Military chooses the civilian leadership. This didn't work out that well for Rome, for long, and they were much better off than Zimbabwe is today. Imagine Detroit in Africa, with No US or State government to prop it up. | ||
