Well, I just got back from our Habitat Re-Store, picked up a couple of harmonicas after winning the bid on a silent auction. I've got at least two buddies, musicians who sing and play some seriously good music on a harmonica- anyone here care to throw some pointers, or some good resources on the interwebz for me to gander at?

On both of Chris Stapleton's most recent recordings, it sounds like the SAME guy playing, with the SAME style and intonations, OVER AND OVER. I think I can pick him out on other band's records too, his sound is so distinctive- dang if it's gotten tiresome for me hearing him.
If Nashville needs more harp players, I guess I could lern meself how to work the thing.

Brad, the guy your hearing on Chris Stapleton's records is Mickey Raphael, best known for his work with Willie Nelson, but also a producer and first call harmonica player on a lot of other people's recordings.

I used to sing with The Pat Ramsey Band on Stevie Ray Vaughan songs in Tallahassee. He did the harmonica on Red Hot and Blue by Johnny Winter from 1978.

Thanks, Mike. If you listen for the harp, he basically just sounds in over the top of whatever else is going on.

On Bela Fleck's early Flecktones recordings, you'll hear one of my favorite multi-instrumentalists... IIRC he re-joined the band for a more recent recording.
