...and never in that good, third-date kinda way, either.

So, I have a sound company. Been doing some pretty decent-sized local/regional shows this season. Having fun, have good bands, good equipment, and been building a bit of a reputation for same. Most shows I do, are in my area - rural, quiet, just honest hardworking folk who like live music. The kind of audience who'll ask "you've been running around a ton, can I get you something to drink or eat while I'm at the food truck?"

Did a show with one of my usual groups, at an outdoor venue down towards DC. HUGE crowd; security came up to me a couple times and said "we've NEVER seen this many people up dancing for this - this is great!!". The guys onstage nailed the show, they knew their parts, I had a great mix going out front...it was a hell of a night.

Dead-tired after the show (which I had rushed to after working all day at my day job), loaded my equipment in the truck and headed home. Had a gig a week later; truck lives in a garage; I never bothered unloading the gear. I have a system; it only goes in one way, and a quick visual after the load confirmed "yep, it's all there", so I went home and parked the truck for a week.

Setting up for yesterday's gig, I realized...I *don't* have it all.

Doing bigger shows lately, I've been taking my Nikon rig so I can get some photos of the bands, and of my equipment. Part fun, part publicity. Being a camera-bag, it doesn't really have a "spot" in the pack; it's small, and it can float around either in the bed, or in the cab of the truck. The rest of the system only fits in the truck one way - I have 5000 watts, plus cables, mics, stands, monitor cases, and my mixing console and it all fits - only one way - under the tonneau cover in my 8' pickup bed.

Since the camera bag "floats"...I didn't notice that someone had lifted it at some point after the DC gig. Nikon D5100, four lenses ranging from 28mm to 300mm, and all of my SD cards.

I don't know what pisses me off more - the fact that someone had the nerve to pick up a bag that didn't belong to them, or the fact that I was stupid enough to trust that nobody would pick up a bag that didn't belong to them.

Guess it's time to do some shopping...that I really didn't want to do right now (nor have I budgeted for it).

>>>I don't know what pisses me off more -

A) the fact that someone had the nerve to pick up a bag that didn't belong to them, or

B) the fact that I was stupid enough to trust that nobody would pick up a bag that didn't belong to them.

The correct answer is A. In a "perfect" world . . . we should not have to rely on trust to keep people from stealing things. You and I, and most here, are fortunate enough to spend most our lives in the company of trustworthy folks. We get complacent and forget that when we are in a venue, outside our daily norm, we encounter these risks.

You're a trusting and trustworthy guy . . . no need be pissed off or beat yourself up about that. It's not stupidity . . simply misplaced trust.

I'd direct all my "pissed off" toward the thief. What a shame assholes like that are out there.

If you want true "stupid" try dropping a camera from a helicopter.

:-)

This now begs the question of "what system do you want to use"?

I can put you on the path for Fujifilm, but not up on Canon, Nikon, or really Sony.

No matter which direction you go, lenses are the expensive part.

This is the place for Fuji info https://www.fujix-forum.com/forums/

I have an X-T1 and a few lenses that I use, and these are going for around $450-$500 for the body. Long lenses are an issue with only a 100-400 f4 zoom on the long end, and it's well over $1000. There is a cheap 55-230 that goes for around $150 used that I have, haven't done a lot with it and it is really a sunshine lens at f5.6-f6.5.

If you are into mirrorless . . . I have a new Fuji Film X100F that I have been given by the Fuji folks (they are here in Valhalla, NY) to test for 6 months. It's pretty amazing stuff.

Not sure if you are asking me, but Fuji is crop.

For nighttime use I might be tempted to suggest a Sony A7s as the larger pixels gather more light. It's a 12mp sensor but full frame and good video.

I've been Nikon since HS, back in the darkroom days...I'm fully aware I'm a hobby-hack, I won't lie to myself or anyone else about my "abilities" lol.

We'll see.

I've emailed USAA (my insurance company), upfront with them about not having any serial numbers or anything like that. Maybe that'll get something, I dunno. Also been trolling CL and local classifieds to see if anyone's selling a D5100 with no charger (that's still plugged in over my workbench). Not holding my breath on either front though.

So no luck finding it...no word from insurance so I'm assuming I'm on my own.

Been a Nikon guy all along, since my old film and darkroom days. Most of what I do these days is low-light, live-performance stuff. I'm leaning towards Nikon D7200, with an 18-140 as a starter lens. With 24.1mp resolution, I can always "get closer" in editing if I need a closeup shot here and there...thoughts? I'd love a D5 but that's more than I spend to buy motorcycles!
