http://www.defenseone.com/technology/2017/08/why-d idnt-us-shoot-down-north-korean-missile/140620/?or ef=d-river

Why didn't we shoot down the N. Korean missile the overflew Japan?

A few good reasons.

It wasn't aimed at anyone. No need to waste the bucks shooting at a dud headed for the middle of the Pacific.

We might miss. That's always embarrassing, and we don't need to hand Kim any PR wins. He's going to tell his own slaves that he's kicking our butts even as his cities melt, but the perception of the S. Koreans, Japanese, and China is important. Better not show a fail if you don't have to.

we might hit. A real intercept will show a lot. Russia & China have a LOT of radar and radio sets in the area to watch us and they would love to have a clean recording of the radar frequencies and pulse modulation, and the commands sent to guide the ABM, just so they can jam them, when it's important to THEM.

I presume the orders have already been given to shoot down a missile headed for Tokyo, Guam, etc.

I'm actually worried more about Taiwan than Guam. Kim could hurt us, and an important ally and do payback to the Chinese govt. all in one shorter, easier shot. ( OTOH, the Chinese probably are a bit nervous Kim would hit THEM )

You should check out the Astronomy pic of the day.

NASA still does some good work.

Don't forget their job now is making Muslims feel good about their contributions to science.

Hey, that's hard! Like making Shakers feel good about their porn industry.

The ice pack was receding. That's called summer.

In fact, at the rate days are getting shorter, in less than three years we'll be in total darkness. ; )

https://www.ecowatch.com/pope-francis-climate-chan ge-2479496671.html

The Last Pope is a true believer in the religion of Global Warming.

I admit, it's nicer in some perverted way to not like a Pope. I thought John Paul II was a hero for standing up to the Evil Empire, and Benny 16 was surprisingly on the ball, especially for the former head of the Holy Inquisition. I found myself cheering on, and agreeing with both fine men on occasion. Which, as an ex-Catholic ( baptized in that Church ) made me a little uncomfortable.

Most of the Popes before John Paul II I didn't like for the simple reason that they seemed to me to be keepers of the unearned power, hoarders of vast wealth, and misogynist creeps, And of course the whole sexually uptight but pay no attention to the sex with little boys thing.

The current Pope, OTOH has proven that the previous one was dead right about the current Pope's religion. Which is Liberation Theology, AKA Soviet Stooge, AKA fake Christian, or as Benedict put it, Demonic.

I would be honored to be excommunicated by this guy, but I'd have to lie like he does about my faith first, and I won't do that.

Just another polar region stunt to take advantage of the ice free Arctic now that the world has melted, being forced to turn back because of "unprecedented" sea ice.

Apparently "unprecedented" now means just like almost every year, but not how we lied about it, for more than 20 years.

I'm not sure what word now means "pay no attention to the predictions we made in the past that didn't happen" or "you can't be reading this because mankind perished 30 years ago when the oceans died".

It used to be "fraud", but that's now only used to describe Faith other than Islam and Marxism.

This has to go in the science thread because I don't even have language to cover it. I'm hoping a medical professional does.

Santa Cruz is the center of the Keep it Weird movement (sorry Austin and Portland, do try to keep up).

It has not gone well for them either (please pay attention Portland and Austin). Most of it has to do with a larger college population out voting the residents who want some control over what is going on in their city. To no avail.

I think it's fitting that the UCSC mascot is a Slug.

http://nypost.com/2017/09/09/new-york-city-is-over due-for-a-major-earthquake/

Sensationalism and hyperbole. Yet it's true a big quake in the NYC area would be a disaster of extraordinary magnitude. If the water lines and traffic tunnels failed or were temporarily blocked, say for weeks, Manhattan might be uninhabitable. Lose all but one bridge and the tunnels and the island would run out of food in days and no way to evacuate or place to put the refugees. Natural gas lines could break leaving the city in flames and without heat. ( both are especially ironic )

Worst case scenario would be in a winter storm. Or summer heat wave.

The blockbuster Hollywood earthquake movies never show the aftermath. And are naturally obsessed with LA.

Of course, the biggest quake on record in the Continental U.S. was in Missouri. Back when towns in the region were small. ( church bells rang on the East coast from that quake )

And disasters that are "due" include Super volcano in Yellowstone ( probably not soon ) , Northwest coast quake & undersea slide, ( triggered by N Korea nuclear war? Nothing like a radioactive tsunami! Sharks? Hah! ) & everyone's favorite, comet or asteroid strike.

Long overdue, but in the case of a comet, weeks of warning, giving us widespread panic and religious wars.

Me? I just take them as they come. I'm hoping Jose hits D.C. ....... I always hope stuff hits D.C. : )

North and South are antiquated direction roles. Maps should be transdirectional with no racist, fascist distinction between N,S,E or W. If you self-identify as wanting to drive west from chicago to get to NYC, you should be able to drive west and still get there. If you want to say that the North seceded due to Southern Aggression, you should be entitled to your opinion. No one should force their cardinal views on you.

I have no clue on pole flipping. The Sun, British paper, loves lurid science and covers such things often.

Asteroids are overdue. Super volcanoes are due soon, maybe, and real orbital periodic Ice Age isn't due for a few thousand but mini ice ages that topple civilization and lead to dark ages are likely.

Unfortunately weather prediction is subject to chaos and the periodic appearance is subject to swings and slides, that come from the inertia and fractal resonances.

Asteroids and volcanic eruptions are deceptive, looking at time lines. As the planet cools volcanism slows. Doesn't stop, though, and the range of variation in timing a mega eruption is more than the rate of change in human history. So, could be Tuesday, or 12,000 years.

Asteroids are similar. There are less of them overall, over time, as they run into planets. The rate of change is tiny, so it's just a foolish illusion to think they don't happen any more. Plus Jupiter and the other gas giants pump rocks out of the Oort cloud as they swing by to rain down on us from light hours away.

My opinion is we live in a golden age of natural disasters where we've had enough time to leave the cave and build space stations. I wanted to be a. Asteroid Ranger as a kid. We need Space Cadet training on The Wheel, and nuclear patrol boats tracking and diverting rogue rocks!

Don't know what to do about the volcanoes that doesn't seem like a bad movie. : )

"What the climate hysterics never do is offer any quantitative analysis to substantiate their claims of increased hurricane activity. They don’t, because they can’t.

To better measure the destructive force of hurricanes and all tropical cyclones, NOAA developed the accumulated cyclone energy (ACE) index, which measures wind energy and can be summed over the entire season. ACE includes number, strength, and duration of all the tropical storms in the season. ACE is a better indicator than comparing individual hurricanes, if the intensity of tropical storms is increasing over time. ACE is not increasing globally or in the northern hemisphere as atmospheric greenhouse gases, mainly carbon dioxide (CO2), are increasing. "
