I found an interesting article recently on the FXR and Erik Buell's involvement in the process. I was just re-reading it and noticed a tantalizing hint I missed the first time:
quote:What would you have done differently about the design? EB: Me? I just worked there and did my best to make what they wanted work as well as I could. Y’all ought to know by now that big cruisers are not what I like. I think we made it a lot better than any H-D before. How would I do a performance cruiser? Well the world likely will never know! Well maybe Ed Burke from Yamaha and a few others do, but that’s a different story…
(italics added) Court has mentioned several times that Erik worked on designs for other manufacturers. Was one of them a Yamaha? Complete article: http://www.hotbikeweb.com/saga-fxr |

Best H-D's ever made. In my not humble at all opinion. I recall them on the cover of every bike magazine. All of them. ( when the Evo engine came out ) Every article went more or less the same. "You won't believe this but Harley Davidson built a world class bike. It handles, It's got freight train torque, a low seat height, and style. This bike changes everything." Often with a side bar editorial on how the FXR saved H-D. |

Yamaha... A reason for this familiar cowling? https://www.yamahamotorsports.com/transcontinental -touring/models/2018/star-venture

Our product training says "musclecar inspired styling", but....it's AIR cooled. The pods certainly bear a resemblance though....and there was a lot of chat about "mass centralization", not only here, but in the FZ-10 product course and the R1 course. I'll let everyone here know how the Venture is, when we get our first one and I start putting some miles on it |

I had a 1990 FXR. Headwork, S&S cam, Crane single fire ignition, Mikuni carb, upgraded brakes and suspension. In my opinion, one of the best bikes produced by HD. The Evo was a great motor. Sold it to buy my first Buell. A 1999 Cyclone. |

Some guys I went to MMI with bragged that their FXR made five horsepower or so more than my Buell on the dyno (mine was all stock with bolt ons at the time, theirs cam, big valve heads, and bolt ons). I was like, yeah...but my bike is smaller displacement, weighs over 100 lbs less, and handles much better. Nothing could smite their enthusiasm. The FXR is cool. Probably the best Harley to date...but a sporty Harley is still a bit of an oxymoron. |

I would be very interested to know if any of the bikes Erik designed for other manufacturers are still in production. It'd be especially cool to ride one and put "Buell" stickers on it. |

Would love it if someone could confirm Erik had a hand in the MT01, would instantly stop the Buell digs from my very trick MT01 owning mate.

Erik may have had no involvement in the MT01, but it probably never would've existed without Buell. It's clearly a stylized ripoff. I dig it though. |

That Star Venture looks like a great bike for a 55 yr old (like me) I can only dream of owning multibikes. |

That Yamaha is essentially my Ultra Classic with newer lighting. I bet it rides nice and probably fitting of going across the country like the name suggests. |

They're actually targeting and some of the reviews say matching, the power and handling of the 'wing. With a v-twin. Should be a fun ride once we receive one! |

Erik had no involvement with the MT-01 Court- can you say anything else about what he did design, like when did he design it, and is the bike still in production? |

An air-cooled twin matching the power of a Goldwing? That would be truly impressive. (Message edited by fresnobuell on August 28, 2017) |
