I have had some interesting experiences with my fellow Faculty members. I am quite certain . . . . as an former USMC marksman, White House Detail, construction worker . . . that I am somewhat . . perhaps . . . of an anomaly. If most of these folks had to check their oil, change a flat or install a 3-way light switch . . . they would be completely lost. We have a skewed, convoluted and misguided concept of what "knowledge" is in America. I, burdened with more degrees than necessary, have a high appreciation for academia, research and pure knowledge. But . . . absent experiences like being stuck on the side of a Nevada highway at 9pm on a July night . . . a person simply lacks the cognitive catalyst necessary to deploy any, regardless of amount, of academic "book learning". If anything can't, in the end, be translated to practical application, meaningful information or something to impact our lives . . . it's mere theory. I still enjoy recounting the "test" i gave 27 incoming Ivy League graduate students. The first question was "name the 3 branches of the United States Government". Scary | ||

By the way . . . . If you want to really see them squirm . . . try taking away the word . . . pedagogical . . . pedagogies . . .or pedagogy. They stand mute . . . unable to communicate. I can't pronounce so I generally substitute "teaching". I've yet to find a person who doesn't know what the world "teaching" means and, when I used, "pedagogy" with my students they all looked like 6 month old Labrador Retrievers looking at an oscillating fan for the first time. | ||

Actually the Marines were first. Recruiting began before the Declaration. ( technically the Navy was in existence but not a formal entity until after the Corps. ) That's why the Marines guard the streets of Heaven. Loopholes.  There's a cognitive disconnect in academia and politics. Example. I'm an old school women's libber. Equal rights, not husband's property, basic stuff. I think most will agree that men and women are different. But in principle we're all human and equal in our potential. Sure, the average guy can bench press more than the average gal, and the Ninja Warrior Gals can kick average guy butt, so watch the generalizations, eh? What freaks the academics and politicos is "if women are equal they also aren't property, check. That means adult women aren't property, check? That means no one is obligated to support them just like if they were a man, check? " At which point folk on both sides of the argument go ballistic. Each for their own reasons. Pretty sure you can guess the butt-covering rationalizations if you think crooked. | ||

They sell a lot of stuff for other people who make beer & cars etc. Sales support the insanely high salaries of the workers in pro football. You sure can't pay a bunch of people hundreds of thousands or millions from ticket sales. I'll skip the exploitation aspect of a high injury activity that leads to short careers and disabled & shortened lives. Simply you sell the show. If the show doesn't please the customer he won't buy it. For years the customer base has been low to high middle income folk. The myth pushed by pro football is fans are patriots and salt of the earth normal folk and that's mostly true. The rich & left like to claim to be above such mundane things, it makes them feel superior. That's those that aren't buying sky box seats and enjoying themselves despite the trendiest notions of holier than thou. So when the product says things that displease the customers, implying that the customers are racist and the police are evil, the customer loses interest in being dissed and quits buying. Simple as that. If Budweiser had reps that called their customers red neck morons their customers would buy less beer no matter the truth of the allegations. Less beer from Budweiser. So pro football lost paying customers when a few players made it all about themselves being politically virtuous, and at the same time implying that the customers suck, what do you expect. Ditto for the media machine built around selling and exploiting this entertainment industry. Tim Tebow has a similar problem in reverse. The media machine didn't like his religious aspects since their politics IS their religion. But Tim didn't deliberately torque people off the same way Colin does. He's not getting hired because he's bad for profits. That's the bottom line. No matter how good a ball player the is. | ||
