I found a bike two months ago and purchased it as is at a local Harley dealer.

It's a 2001 Dyna FXDXT, so it's a fairly low volume bike and it's completely stock. The dealer sent me the title and it read 53,000 miles. The federal odometer statement I signed and the bike matched at 30,xxx miles.

They are getting the title fixed due to the error and paying for my tags (only $50), but this will brand the title due to the title issue. I feel like this will reduce the perceived value of the bike to future owners, plus make it harder to sell.

I don't really want to have them buy the bike back, or go to court. I hate to sound like this is a money grab, but it was their error and it will cost me money should I sell it or it gets totaled down the road.

Thoughts?

It would be fair for the dealer to reimburse you for the value of 53000 mile bike vs 30000. The amount should be easy to determine. An offer of a free service would be a nice gesture as well.
Failing that, if you keep it for 3 years it will be a 20 year old bike and at that point mileage will be secondary to overall condition in determining it's value.

Or fix the paperwork without a brand. Do you have any photo evidence of the correct odometer? Go take one, and take it to the DMV with your paperwork. Take a photo of the VIN as well.

Just tell any future prospective buyer the truth. Take a photo of the odometer and the sales papers side by side to document it. : )
