ristorante to the East in downtown Indianapolis. I had tomato florentine there over 20 years ago, and was blown away. I need to see what else they make.

I still get the focaccia from where I used to work, keep some frozen... until I need to make my own pizza!

Slice it laterally, carefully, then I'll put my own tomato sauce (homegrown/homemade), killer cheese, fresh herbs from the deck containers, et cetera... finish with a very light dusting of
dried Thai and Scorpion chili powder...

Gonna start using my bread maker to fix my own pizza dough... might attempt making my own mozzarella someday.

Pardon the hijack, but we all know Crusticle is a big dog chow hound! ; )

I was on a trip out West and stopped in Flagstaff Arizona. I went out to a brewery that night, (go figure), and asked if they had food. They replied they had pizza so I ordered one. It was pretty decent so I asked them about it and they told me they order frozen cheese pizza's and then add their own fresh toppings and spices. Not a bad idea for a start up business!

We need to start calling this Crusty's pizza blog!

There was a place, My Pi, in Chicago... 1977.. 3 pieces of Deep Dish and I was stuffed.
Missed the train to Waukegan so I slept against a wall at the station till the next train at 6 or 7 am.

There is a place in Atlanta I've been hearing about called Antico that uses a 1000 degree wood fired oven,the pie is said to be amazing.I've just got to get over my dislike of driving into Atlanta.

Pizza


My last little Snippet was about food, and it got a few reactions from people that need to be addressed. I wrote about a few different foods and items that I like, but the one thing that drew all the comments was Pizza.

I grew up in a Sicilian family. Well, half, anyway. My maternal grandparents were immigrants during the 1920s. They lived in the house with us and we kids had the benefit of having wonderfully good Italian food during our formative years. I still remember my grandmother’s Pizza; one slice was a meal all by itself.

On Friday nights, my parents would get together with relatives and friends and play cards. They would sit at the kitchen table, and we kids would sit in the living room and watch TV with Nana. She loved Mitch Miller, and I loved The Twilight Zone. Along about 7:30 or 8:00, my folks would send me down to Saldi’s bar to get a Pizza. (a Small was $.75 and a Large was $1.25) Kids weren’t allowed in the bar at all, so we’d go to the back door and knock. The lady who made the Pizzas would take our order, and we’d wait outside in the back until it was ready, and I’d take it home. It was something I looked forward to every week.

I didn’t think about Pizza a lot until I grew up and discovered that there are many variations, and many ways to screw it up. It’s amazing how such a simple concept can be either incredibly delicious or horrendously disgusting. There are many subtleties that can turn a basic Pizza into either a masterpiece or a waste of ingredients.

Another thing I’ve noticed is that, like Chinese Food, the Pizza one person loves, somebody else will find to be only mediocre. My ex and I had trouble finding Pizza that we both thought was first class. (Then again, she thought her spaghetti sauce was better than mine, which shows you how wrong some people’s tastes are). There are some Pizzas that I consider outstanding.

If you’re ever in Providence, Rhode Island go up on Federal Hill (the Italian part of the city) to Casserta Pizzeria and order a Cheese Pizza. I don’t know anyone who hasn’t loved it immediately. If you go, don’t expect a fancy restaurant. It’s a Pizza Joint. But the Pizza is truly Amazing.

Another of my favorite Pizza joints is Nana’s in Everett, Massachusetts. That’s another place that my ex and I could agree on. Their pizza is a thinner pizza than Casserta’s (thought they also make a damned good Sicilian Pizza), but my taste buds short out in ecstasy whenever I get a Pizza there.

There used to be a fantastic pizza joint in Waltham, Mass. called Franca’s that used a wood fired oven, and the Pizzas there were heavenly; but they went out of business after a couple of decades. The original owner sold the business, and the new owner ran it into the ground. Pity.

Since I grew up in the Boston area, I prefer pizza from there, but I’ve had Pizza in New York that was also remarkably delicious. One regret I have is that I never got to check out the Pizza from Court’s joint in the City. I’ve never had Pizza baked in a coal fired oven, and the idea intrigues me. One of these days, I’ll have to go back to New York and check it out.

The Northeast has the absolute best Pizza I’ve ever eaten. I’ve had California Pizza, and, if you like an overpriced Saltine cracker with rutabaga, tofu, tuna and asparagus, more power to you; but it ain’t Pizza. As far as my experience goes, Californians wouldn’t know what a good Pizza is if one walked up and bit them in the ass.

Oh; one correction to my last Snippet; I wrote that my brother did’t really like any of the pizza joints here in Cincinnati. That was bad information. He has one place that he really likes the Pizza from; a little drive through place called Trotta’s. Since it’s strictly a Drive Through, I’ll have to carry the pizza home on the Roadster. I’ve carried Pizzas on my bikes for years, including many Pizzas from the Chateau in Waltham, so I think I can do it, but it’s always a pain in the ass. There are some things that a car is better for than a motorcycle; carrying a large Pizza is one. (the waitresses at the Chateau would put whatever slices I didn’t eat into a small Pizza box which would fit at an angle in my saddlebag)

And now; back to our regularly scheduled program.

I think that today, I’ll go over to the BMV and register my bike and get my Ohio driver’s license.

Bad pizza? I LOVE pizza! The only pizza I had that I didn't like was when Cici's changed their recipe/their ingredients. The location I would eat at every so often is no longer in business, so that kind of took care of itself...

The pizzas sold by street vendors in Berlin is definitely different than a typical US pizza, but I still enjoyed it whenever I've had it.

OK, I guess I was less than impressed by the pizza I had in Chicago - the one with the spinach on it - but the sauce and crust were good from what I recall...

One of the best pizzas I had was from a joint in Indy. A former Bueller moved up there. One year on the way up to Homecoming I overnighted at at one of the places in Indy that he's lived at over the years, and he ordered a meat lovers type pizza from the place - and LORDY, was that some DAMN GOOD PIZZA! Too bad (for Ourdee... ; ) ) I don't recall the name of the joint! Whenever I've overnighted in Indy since then, we always seem to do something else for dinner so I haven't been able to enjoy that pizza again...

Roma's in East Troy has - or at least had - a taco pizza that was one of my favorites when working at Buell. Minus the tomatoes, of course. It had seasoned ground beef, lettuce, cheese and crunched up taco chips. DANG IT! I was going to have one at Homecoming this year, but I noticed something a little different on the menu - a Ponza Rotti. Not as good as the original Ponza Rotta from Jimmy's Grotto in Waukesha, but the 2nd half definitely made for a good snack after Garage Night at Homecoming this year.

Why, oh why, did I not have pizza for dinner tonight (so I could have cold pizza for breakfast in the morning...)?!?!

There used to be a joint called Paisano's Pizza in Garden Grove, California.

Best pizza I've had. A family size pie covered the whole table.

Next to that it`s Marri's Pizza in Long Beach, California. Still open to this day.

OK then. If anyone travels through Tellico Plains TN, look up Tellico Grains Bakery. They do everything with a wood-fired oven, breads and such, all from scratch. Used to be they'd only do pizza on Saturdays, then close on Sunday/Monday...

They now have a dedicated oven for pizza. I stopped in one day and ordered a sandwich (ALL killer), and was stunned to see someone eating a PIZZA not on a Saturday!!

At any rate, check them out if you're passing through.

Ourdee; when my grandmother would make spaghetti & meatballs, she would take a slice of bread and put some sauce on it and break up a meatball as a snack for me while the sauce was cooking. It wasn't Pizza, but it sure tasted good!

Expenses and Cherubs


I’m Officially an Ohio Resident. Yesterday, I went down to the BMV with an assortment of paperwork and I now have an Ohio Drivers License and my Ohio Title for the Roadster has been applied for. I’m also registered to vote here and I’m going to be an organ donor. The title will be at the BMV after 1:00 tomorrow afternoon. So far, it’s only cost me $62.50. However, it’s going to cost me more when I pick up the Title and get an Ohio License Plate. Probably another $40.00 bucks or so. The clerk wasn’t sure how much it was going to be. I guess the registration expires on my birthday or somethin’. I’ll find out more when I go back.

I have to say that the Ohio BMV has it all over the Massachusetts RMV. I went in, saw a friendly and helpful clerk, got everything done and was on my way in less than half an hour. I’d say the Mass. Registry could learn a thing or two from Ohio; but then, what would they do will all those miserable bureaucratic clerks? They’d have to find other jobs for them. I know; they could ship them all to Pakistan so that they could man all the helpful phone lines for Cable TV companies!

Anyway, I’m Legal now, and the cost wasn’t too bad. Yesterday, I also ordered more test strips for my INR tester. I buy them directly, and they only cost me about $10.00/strip, which is half of what it used to cost me. Still, that’s another $120.00. And I sent U Mass Memorial a hundred bucks toward my last Cystoscopy. With those expenses, I won’t be buying paint this month. Still, there’s enough to keep me busy. The yard work is enough to take up most of my time for a while. While I could get it done faster, I would have a problem with what to do with all the cut up jungle. The trash men will only take so much each week. I’ll eventually get it all done, and I’m not in a hurry. I can work at a comfortably slow pace. I try to accomplish something towards the house every day. Each day that I’m here, the place is improving.

It’s surprising how many people like those tacky, hideous Cherubs that are stuck on the bathroom wall. Since they’re right over the toilet, It gives a new dimension to the expression, “Holy Shit!” It will be a very enjoyable day for me when I finally take them off. I’m going to save them for last; they’ll come off after all the rest of the nauseatingly tacky wallpaper comes off.

I was hoping to hit the Peoria TT, Springfield Mile and the West Virginia Buell Rally over the next month. The rally is Top Priority and Springfield is very do-able since it happens after my next check. I’m not too sure about Peoria, though. I’d really like to see the 750s on that track. I also think that Henry Wiles should be able to put it to the Indian “Wrecking Crew”. I’d really like to be there to see that happen. Then again, Sammy Halbert put it to the Indians at the X Games on an XR-750, so he might be able to do it at Peoria, as well. I might just have to do some financial juggling, but if I can figure it out, I’ll be at all three events. If I can’t come up with the dough, I can always watch the races live on Fans Choice TV, but it ain’t the same as being there.

Today, I’m working on making my ”Entertainment Center” a little better. I have an idea that won’t require much more cash and it will make things more functional. We’ll see.

It looks like whoever gets the bid is going to start piering and raising my house in October and I don't know how long it's going to take. I have to remove my AC Condenser so they are waiting for cooler temps. I've been getting bids the last couple of weeks and I'm in limbo at the moment, that's why I'm not in Little Switzerland right now!

As far as pizza is concerned, St. Louis uses a cheese product called Provel. It's used along with mozzarella on a thin crust. The only thing that will wash that cheese off your teeth is cold beer! I love the stuff but everybody in Chicago hates it! Then again there's really not much the two cities agree on!

I decorated the bathroom in a house we lived in. Berber carpet, fancy wall paper, jacuzzi bathtub, built-in glass shelves, 6" crown molding, etc. Tracey puts "Anne Geddes" babies dressed like cherubs over the back of the toilet. Needless to say, she ruined a mans time of standing in solitude. In a couple of house moves those little framed works of art have disappeared.
