I do admit to having informed judgments about social science. They are to social understanding what alchemy is to nuclear physics. The Byzantine empire understood this stuff better, wrote clearer articles and were far ....far less racist & sexually repressed than today's college professors. Those Romans didn't care what your skin color was. If you spoke the language ( Latin & Greek ) and acted civilized, you were acceptable in society. Poor folk were unlikely to be invited to the best parties, just like today. ( and had parties you'd probably rather go to, just like today. BBQ vs. Pheasant under glass ) Certainly not a perfect world, but they had soap for clothes. You'd still take to the baths and oil to scrape off the dirt. Soap was too harsh for bathing, but it got better. Oh, yeah, slavery. Plenty of that. Again color had zip to do with it. They may have believed that men with faces in their bellies lived in deepest Africa. But they'd laugh out of the hall a modern anthropology report of a tribe so primitive it didn't understand where babies come from. Cats know where kittens come from. So I've been debating a friend via email for years about global warming. He's a loyal warmist Democrat all the way. He was constantly shifting goalposts and raising red herrings and non-sequitur and ad hominem against authors of skeptical papers, and I finally had enough, so I started asking him to present a valid formal logical argument with premises that are supported by the hard science and which lead to a conclusion. I offered to help. He won't do it. He knows that any argument formally presented will instantly be shot full of holes. Despite incessantly falling back upon "consensus", he won't even say what the consensus is specifically. He knows that there is no real consensus. This is a very intelligent person, masters in engineering, in his sixties. I can't figure out if he just enjouphs trolling, or is wilfully delusional. So bizarre. | ||
