OK. I've got Amdro, got the baits, even got organic spray (soybean oil kills bugs, who knew?)...
I HATE SUGAR ANTS. This year they're worse than ever, and I ask youn's what works short of calling in a pro. My neighbor called in someone for a treatment, and he says they're just gone, nada. Me jealous, big time, and if the cost isn't too bad, I may just go ahead and pull the trigger on calling someone. If I can learn of am effective solution off the shelf, I'll head out and get it pronto...
We try real hard to do just that, but we certainly cook a LOT around here for 2 people. Little buggers can find ANYTHING. I'll drop some more Amdro outside, just got done cutting the yard.
Try the insecticide 'Talstar'. Until recently it was only sold to licensed exterminators but is now available at Tractor Supply, Southern States, etc. It's some pretty heavy duty stuff.
Thanks, RD! I guess I could have done the same thing, just so used to hollerin' at all youns.
"Advion" will be shipped from Amazon soon, for good money. The reviews were awesome, funny, and so on. They showed a similar product, same name for roaches, also great reviews. I'll certainly post as things progress.
Yeah, Court, used those lots over the years. They seem to work a bit, but they don't seem to throw the MOAB at the b*tches. And yes, the key is killing the queen. The stuff I ordered was reviewed to blow out the carpenter ants too, FWIW.
Years ago I spotted a fire ant mound just outside my property... went and got the killing/drowning solution, pow, goners. But, a good friend who's dealt with them said just pour a big bottle of Dawn on them- the soap melts their exoskeleton. IIRC they used Dawn on seabirds and critters after oil spills. Interesting!
Suspend-sc. the poison is encapsulated. It sticks to them, and they take it home, whereupon it is released. It's persistent for about three months, and can be used indoors and out.
I spray Home Defense yearly along the concrete foundation outside, and along the sill plate in the basement.( then leave the house for several hours )
But this only slows bugs coming in and out. Once they've got a nest in your house, poison bait as Court suggests is the only way short of tenting the house and fumigating. It will work.
Mix https://www.20muleteamlaundry.com 50/50 with powdered sugar. Spread around the edge of the house foundation. The ants take it back to the colony and no more ants.
That liquid ant bait I use is pretty much that Borax (I bought some before I found the bait) solution with the mixing done for you and an easy way to dispense it.
Hehe, good timing on this thread since we just found a trail inside from one of the weep holes on our windows. The SO goes nuts on eradication. We hate to do it since some of them help our garden, but once they breach the outer perimeter of the domicile, the nuclear option comes into play. In the past I've paid to have some removed, but now I use the Terro and Grants Kills Ants spikes with some spray around the foundation.
The carpenter ants require a little more work since they hide well and by the time they breach the inside of the house, they are well established. I keep the bait traps on the roof, under the eaves and under the house.
First intrusion sin years and only because we were away on vacation.
BTW: I have found over the years, some colonies will avoid the traps, so it is important to get them into their paths. I have also found ants will avoid vinegar, so I wipe down the counters and use it to herd them to the traps.
Pet safe once dry. No messy powders or traps that animals can get into. Approved for use inside, outside, even in kitchens/food prep areas. It's the shiznit.
Thanks Hoot, all youn's! I'll certainly post up as time goes on. Expecting my package today or tomorrow!
FWIW, I put out several little "dishes" of granular Amdro yesterday, plus dusted the perimeter/foundation, barely seen any since... but I KNOW they'll be back!
Better yet, some Irish moss, last 15 minutes of the boil, and you won't have to use a clarifier before kegging. When I forget to use it, I use gelatin in the secondary fermenter.
Irish moss works on ants? I was just saying larger brewery's use DE like pool filters. As far as brewing goes we always use Irish Moss. It goes in with the 2nd hopping!
Ah. Mechanical filter. I thought you meant they used it as a coagulant, because when I hear 'clarify' in the context of brewing, it's usually in reference to that.
We now return you to your regularly scheduled thread about killing creepy crawlies.
