Crusty,
I don't know you (yet), but from reading your tales here and elsewhere, I know you are not the pink and white stripe wainscoting kind of guy. Hurts my eyes.

They make a cheap and easy way to remove that stuff without a steamer. It's a kit with gloves, a solution and little device that pokes holes in the wallpaper. Then you spray the solution on it and wait for a bit while the solution dissolves the glue.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00VHLQ18Q/ref=asc_df_B0 0VHLQ18Q5012277/?tag=hyprod-20&creative=394997&cre ativeASIN=B00VHLQ18Q&linkCode=df0&hvadid=167146990 738&hvpos=1o2&hvnetw=g&hvrand=10921711109408291497 &hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint =&hvlocphy=9032185&hvtargid=pla-310386355819

I used that on my kitchen wallpaper that was the ugliest brown, pink and purple color. After removing it, I know why they used wallpaper as the almost purple shade of red was not paint-able (not sure what they used but the pain would not even stick to it). I ended up removing all the drywall to change the color (and repipe and rewire).

And yes, a list would be good as I am filling boxes for Goodwill now for every room in (and out) of the house. I even have multiple tool duplicates I am purging.

It's the least I can do for the enjoyment I get out of your posts.

BTW: I hate plumbing. I am good at it, but hate it. I repiped my entire house several years ago, purging all of the old iron pipe. Freaking house was like the game water-works. Pipes running ll over the place with multiple dead ends and senseless routing of the pipes I swear I took a mile of pipe out of the walls and under the house and put less that a 1/3rd of that back in (OK, not a mile but it seemed like it).

Burning Out?

The house is almost livable. I now have grounded electrical outlets, pipes that don’t leak, a working toilet and even Hot water. The carpet is as clean as I can get it with a rented Rug Doctor Pro from Home Depot. It looks a lot better than it did, but it still looks pretty funky.

I’ve spent myself pretty broke. Actually, I still have enough cash to get through the month, but I’ve run my credit card up to stratospheric levels. It’s going to take me most of the coming year to get the card paid down, but it’s still worth it. I have my own home. And I’m getting it at a bargain price.

I’ve pretty much burned myself out lately. Yesterday morning, I mowed the lawn as much as I could. David lent me his electric mower and a couple of extension cords. The cords were almost long enough, but not quite. There’s a four foot or so stretch that I couldn’t reach. The tech from the Gas company came by and got all my gas troubles sorted. It turns out that the tech who turned on my gas at the meter didn’t turn on the valve at the street. That’s why I couldn’t get the water heater to light. While he was here, yesterday’s tech checked out my furnace and it’s working well.

After the tech left, I went to David’s house and did my laundry. All my clothes were pretty dirty, and I was wearing my last set of clean skivvies. Then I borrowed David’s car and went and rented the rug shampooer. I brought it home, then returned the car, picked up my clean laundry and came home to clean the carpets. That took me until 11:00 last night. Today, I think I’m just going to do as little as necessary. I have to borrow the car again to return the shampooer, and while I’m there, I’ll buy a sponge mop so I can clean the floor without having to do it on my knees. My knees are pretty tender form all the abuse I’ve been giving them the past week.

Jim (Damnut) has offered to give me his spare mower, and I will gratefully accept it. RD has offered to see if he can come up with some furniture. I have nothing except a kitchen table, two chairs and a bed frame for furniture in storage, so that will be a help, also. I’ve got pretty much all my kitchen stuff in storage, and Tammy sent me a bunch more, so I think I’m OK there. A friend of David’s has offered me a recliner love seat, so that’s a start. Little by little, This place will become home.

Next month, I’m going to start painting.I’m not sure what colors I’ll choose for each room, but none of them will be pink. Nor will there be any wallpaper. No roses in a bunting shaped strip along the bedroom ceiling; no Cherubs hovering over the toilet, and no pink and white striped wainscoting in the dining room along with the hideous strip along the ceiling. I’ve got a month to think about color choices, but they’ll be a lot more tasteful than what’s on the walls now.

Well, Time to get started.

Be Careful What You Ask For

This morning, I was feeling pretty burnt out, and I wanted a day off. I needed to return the rug shampooer, and I wanted to stop and buy a sponge mop and a towel. Otherwise, I wanted a day off from all the insanity of making the house livable.

I called David and he was going to come by and take me and the Rug Doctor back to Home Depot. I got everything ready to go and was waiting when I got a call from Jack who told me that they’d been in an accident and David was hurt. They’d let me know more as they found out. A few minutes later, David called and told me that somebody hit a car parked in a lot and pushed it out into the street where it hit David’s car. As we were talking, the police arrived; so David had to hang up. A short while later, Jack called me and told me they both were in Mercy Hospital.

So I jumped on the Roadster and went over to the Emergency Room. To make a long story short, David’s OK. He’s going to hurt like hell for a while and he’ll have trouble using his right arm, but nothing’s broken. Jack is OK too, but he’s also hurting. The Cube is probably Totaled.

A woman confused the brake and gas pedals and stomped on the gas which caused her to hit a parked car and push it out into the street where it broadsided David as he was driving past. It figures that he’s the only person I know whose vehicle was totaled by a parked car. He didn’t hit the parked car; the parked car hit him.

Perry, a close friend came by the Hospital and gave them a ride home once they were discharged. He also came by the house and took me and the shampooer back to Home Depot. I was late in returning it, but they didn’t charge me any overage when I explained why I was late.

So, now I’m back home and all I can think of is the phrase, “Be careful what you ask for; you just might get it!”

David and Jack both are going to be OK and I had a day not being obsessed with working on the house, but it sure isn’t what I was expecting or hoping for.

Excellent night to take a moment, catch your breath and be thankful for your blessings . . . and having a fairly open day where you could juggle all the unexpected balls the circus of life tossed into todays act.

It'll all come together . . .

Well played.

Glad David and Jack are doing fine . . . a Cube can be replaced . . . heck, he may even step up to the new Rectangular or spurge and go with the high performance trapezoid!

LOL!

I've a friend up in Gatlinburg who, years ago, decided to build a wedding chapel on 321N, above Gatlinburg proper... she had it decorated with plenty of cherubs! I was tasked with getting up on a TALL ladder, WAY up in the entrance, and hanging several cherubs from the ceiling.
Took a bit of courage, but those little Cupids should still be hanging there today...

Since I suck at posting pics, I'll see about emailing you a poster I bought several years ago... you'll appreciate it.

Back To Hudson

I’m on my way to Hudson. I need to get things straightened out between my Cardiologist, my Urologist and my Primary Care Physician. If I do what one says to do, there’s a significant chance of my having a stroke. I really don’t want that to happen. This discussion has been going on for weeks, and nothing is getting resolved, so I want to go up there and become a Royal Pain in the Ass to all of them. It’s my life they’re screwing around with. and I really don’t want to die or become a vegetable just because some nurse was too busy or too lazy to do the right thing. The squeaky wheel gets the grease. This wheel is about to squeak loudly and at a pitch to shatter glass.

I’ve gotten sick of the Cincinnati/Hudson run. I’ve done it too many times in the past couple of months. However, this should be the last time for quite a while. I’ll ride up on the Roadster, but I’ll be returning to Cheviot in a U Haul truck (or maybe a Budget rent a truck, or maybe a Penske). My plan at the present time is to go back, get the procedure done, rent a truck and haul all my sh*t to Cheviot. Of course, like all plans, that’s subject to change.

Last night, the weather was perfect in Cincinnati. I was sitting outside at 7:00 in a T-shirt and I was perfectly comfortable. Not hot, not cold, the temperature was perfect. The sky was blue with a few puffy white clouds and there was no wind. It’s hard to leave that, knowing that I’m heading for colder temperatures, but there are things to do that can’t be put off.

There’s a lot of work ahead on the house and yard, but I’m really looking forward to doing it. I don’t mind hard work; I was a Miner for almost 20 years, and I can see all kinds of things that will keep me busy for a long while. I’m also going to be investing a lot of money into my home. Paint and spackle is relatively cheap, but carpeting and a washer, dryer and a gas stove will use up a chunk of money.

Still, the mortgage is cheap enough that I can afford to live there and make it home and do it right; it will just take a bit of time to get it all done.

The other nice part of having an affordable mortgage is that I’ll be able to travel. I think I’ll be able to make it to the Beaufort Sea next Spring when I head North. I’m really looking forward to that. I’ll pick up a few Canadian Provinces along with Alaska. After that, I’ll start saving for a bike to ride in Australia. I’m dumb enough to want to ride across the Nullarbor to Perth. I bet it would be one hell of a ride. But first, Tuktoyaktuk. One dream at a time.

Well, time to get back out there.

What’s In A Name?

I’ve written so many of these Snippets that I’m having a real problem coming up with titles for each new one.

I’m back in Hudson for a couple of weeks before my final move to Cheviot. I’ve got a truckload of work to do to get everything sorted out so I can rent a truck and haul all my sh*t to Ohio.

I got a good bit done yesterday; I mailed some stuff out, bought a can of Gunk to clean the Roadster, got my hair cut, went to the Loonie Noonie, hit the car wash and got the bike looking better, then got caught in a thunderstorm on the way back to Hudson, so now it looks dirty again (plus, I got soaked), then, I went out to dinner with Tammy. Tammy has a ton of furniture she wants to give me. I can use it, but I don’t know if there’ll be room for it all in the truck. I’ll have to see just how big a truck I can get.

On Monday, I have to call my Urologist again. I called yesterday and left a message, but they didn’t return my call. I have to get the Warfarin thing sorted out, or I won’t show up for the Procedure. I’ll wait until I make my move, then I’ll see what I can accomplish in Cincinnati. Christ Hospital there is supposed to be top notch when it comes to both Cardiac and Urology. UMass Memorial is also a good hospital, and it’s where I had my Aortic Valve Replacement done, so I’d prefer to have them do the procedure, but I have to get my anti coagulant issue resolved. I just bought my house; I want to live in it and get it fixed up to reflect my tastes and personality. I don’t want to have a stroke or bleed to death before I get that chance.

Also on Monday, I have to go by the Mass. Laborer’s Pension Fund offices and have them change my direct deposit from my Credit Union here to the Credit Union in Cincy. Then, it’ll be a trip to the Social Security Offices to do the same.

Today, I’m going to bring my Chippewa boots to the Cobbler in Waltham to have them resoled. They aren’t the Perfect Boots for me, but they’re very comfortable on the bike, and they cost a bundle when I bought them, so I don’t want to wear them out prematurely.

Tomorrow is a Free Day. I think that maybe a ride to Vermont would be a good thing. We’ll see.

I rode to Vermont . . . on a whim . . on a free day . . . and rode the Molly Stark By-Way to take a gander at the various Obelisks along the road.

Who would have guessed that I would have wandered into the World Garlic Festival?

There's always a surprise.

Yesterday I hit the tallest peak in the Catskills. The road there was entertaining but the destination a disappointment.

I am finding good BBQ hides in funny places.

Today is rebuilding a 64 year old carburetor.

Popeye And Me

Like all kids of my generation, I used to watch lots of cartoons when I was young (along with my heroes and role models; The Three Stooges). In Popeye cartoons, Popeye would take an incredible amount of abuse until he had reached his limit. Then he would state, “That’s all I can stands; I can’t stands no more!” He would then eat a can of spinach and kick ass.

I’m getting to the point of saying that line. My primary care Physician is telling me to just stop taking Warfarin a week before the procedure. Two people from my Cardiologist’s office are telling me that if I do, I could have a stroke; and that I should never stop, because I have a mechanical valve and clots form on it easily. There is some sort of “Bridging” regimen with testing that they recommend, and the hospital where the procedure is supposed to take place at is excellent at it. However the Nurse/assistant/ secretary attached to my Urologist won’t return my phone calls. Now, I’m starting to get pissed off.

I’m just about to the point of canceling the procedure and having it done in Cincinnati. All these medical people are really pissing me off with their “I’m God and I Know Everything!” attitude.

I’ve decided that if Lisa (Dr. Yates assistant) doesn’t return today’s call (and yesterday’s call and last week’s calls), I’m going to bag it. I’ll call Christ Hospital in Cincy when I get moved and find a Primary Care Physician, a Cardiologist and a Urologist. Hopefully, they’ll treat me a little better than a side of beef.

In the meantime, Yesterday, I picked up the T-shirts for the West Virginia Buell Rally, and I got to the local Social Security office and changed both my mailing address and the Direct Deposit to my new Credit Union. I bought oil and filter to do an oil change, but it was 96º F (35.5 C), and I just didn’t feel like doing it. It’s supposed to cool down tomorrow, so I’ll do it then. Today, I’ll head over to the Pension Fund Offices and change my address and Direct Deposit with them.

It’s getting harder to write Snippets. I’m not traveling, and the little details of daily living don’t seem to be very noteworthy. Maybe I should stop until things start getting interesting, motorcycle wise.

Come on Crusty, you can't take down the cherubs, be creative, get the sharpies out and draw mustaches and glasses on them all, or print off some old fighter planes and have them dog-fighting.

Busy Times

I’m sitting here eating cold pizza for breakfast and thinking about how much I’ve accomplished in the past few days and how much more needs to get done, so I can make my move. Bank deposits have been moved, T-shirts for the West Virginia Buell Rally picked up, oil has been changed in the Sportster, I’ve been to the Library to print things out a couple of times, I’ve priced trucks (Budget is cheaper than U-Haul to rent a truck, but the insurance is a lot higher. They work out to be close to the same price). This afternoon, I hope to get a few sheets of dense foam to use to protect stuff in the truck, and this evening, Damnut’s coming by with a snow blower and a lawn mower and a bunch of boxes.

Tammy has offered me a bedroom set, I just have to figure out how to get over to Waltham with the truck and some help to load it. I also need to get Bill’s old ’78 Sportster from the shop. I’ll start boxing stuff that I have here that I won’t be needing before the move after Jim drops off the boxes. Stuff like my winter gear and extra clothes. Some things though, like the microwave, coffee maker and fire extinguisher get loaded last.

Yesterday, I canceled the pre-op and procedure. I’ll call a major hospital in Cincinnati when I get there (probably Christ Hospital) and find a primary Care Physician, Cardiologist and Urologist that will communicate with each other so that I won’t have to worry about surviving a procedure to make me healthier.

Dates are now set. I just got off the phone with David, and we’ve worked out when I should arrive so that he’ll be there with some help to unload. I’m going to rent the truck on the 23rd and get it loaded. It’ll take most of the day to do that. I’ll have to drive to Waltham, load up the stuff from Tammy’s house, then drive to the garage in Fitchburg and load up all my stuff that’s there, then back to Hudson to load up the stuff here. I’ll probably stay in Hudson overnight and head out early Saturday morning. I should be in Cincinnati on Sunday, and I’ll take a day to recover from loading and driving. Monday, David and a couple of others will be there to help unload, and the truck has to be returned on Tuesday, the 27th.

I’ll be glad when I’m moved in. There’s a lot to do even after I’ve moved, but I’ll be in my own home. That’s a concept worth cherishing.

Crusty, check with your credit card company. They might cover rental cars/trucks so you could possibly decline the coverage and save that money!

I know that my AmEx and MC for sure cover rental cars. Not sure about trucks, but it's worth looking into.

U-Haul even states that most auto insurance policies won't cover a rental truck. I'm taking no chances; I've included the price of the maximum amount of insurance in the price of renting a truck. So, even though Budget has the lowest rental rate, they have the highest insurance premium. Besides, I don't own a car, so I don't have an auto policy even if it would cover a rental truck.

The prices work out to be pretty equal among the three big truck renters once the insurance is added in. A Penske 16' truck is $917.56, a Budget 16' truck is $940.51 and a 20' U=Haul comes out to $1009.00.

I'm going to go with the U-Haul, even though it's over $90.00 more than the 16' Penske because I think the extra four feet will be needed.

I'm tired. I'll be glad when this move is over and I'm installed in my new home. At least until I start getting bored and begin thinking about where I want to ride to next...
