Has anyone here used after market belts on their bikes? I just picked up a Dyna FXDX and need to address an inner primary leak, so I figured I would change the belt while I was in there, but got to looking and Ultima belts seem to be a bit like Shinko tires... Everyone has an opinion, but no one has used them. Bring that the big twins are such a pain the ass to change, is it worth it to take the gamble? Are there belts stronger than stock in case I get bored this winter and open her up? |

Stronger? Sure? It doesn't sound like you have an issue with parts that are too weak though. Building a drag bike? If not, the stock primary is probably up to the task. I was looking at a bike with an open primary when I was shown what happens when you get your pant leg wrapped in there. If you go that route, at least get it wrapped in an effective guard. Yep, an opinion from someone who never owned one. |

Sifo, I wasn't talking about an open primary, I've seen what happens, plus for a daily driver/rider, it seems like it opens a whole can of worms. I was referring to the final drive belt. To get to it, the primary has to be removed. Since there's an oil leak, I was going to knock out the belt while I had it apart since I'd have to do all new seals and gaskets anyway. |

I have an '01 FXDX with about 74,000 miles, I'm still running the stock belt. I had to replace that inner transmission output shaft seal ($12), at around 22,000 miles, is that what you are replacing? I about crapped when the shop said it was a $600 job in their service department. Pulling the outer and inner primary's wasn't all that bad, got it all done in one afternoon. I've had zero issues with the stock belts on this bike, my '84 FXR, or my '85 FXWG. Sorry I can't help with info on aftermarket belts... |

Oops. Never mind. I have no opinion on the final drive belt then. |

I can't help you either as I've only used factory belts. The thing is, they rarely break unlike the Buell belts. Since they don't get bent backward they last a long time. I've gone over 80,000 miles on one and it looked fine when I replaced it. I'd spend the money on a factory one, we know they last. |

Bartimus, same bike, same leak! A hair under 31,000 miles. I feel like this is probably one of those times where cheaping out will cost an extra primary gasket set. I'll find one of our sponsors and get an OEM belt. |
