I got a call last night from a friend I talked into riding Buells. R.D., HD dealer sold me the wrong battery and I put it in. Battery had the Pos. and Neg. terminals in opposite locations. Fan came on when he hooked it up. Long short; He got lucky and only fried one relay. I talked him through the relay tests with the VR disconnected and found the bad one. I told him to try the HD for a new relay with a discount for the wrong battery incident. Also told him to never trust them and to always double check anything you get from them. They originally gave him a sportster battery.

Or burn out the diodes in the VR.

I did that on my '71 Camaro 40 years ago. Borrowed a battery out of my other car after dark. Hit start. Side post nut melted right out of it in a second. No other damage. Lucky it did not explode.

I guess I'm one of the few remaining guys who looks at the black wire, the red wire, the + symbol, and the - symbol...and does the math?

Yep very important to check the terminals, the 1125R uses the same size/specs battery as the XB, but the terminals are reversed so if you aren't paying attention you can make a huge mistake. The parts guy could have simply grabbed one that was on the wrong shelf and didn't notice.

In the case of my failed battery hook up here is what happened.

Way back when there was some and then some more while had any semblance of visible light waiting until morning. No one left around and not a dry match to be had. Recently moved battery to trunk with new long cables not defined by location. Could not see the hand in front of my face dark, with rain, and lightning strikes non existent. Too cold ad wet to feel + or - embossments. After trying for some time I gave up to take the 50/50 and lost.

Having sold and installed batteries since my first job in a gas station at 12 years of age, I was truly mad at myself for loosing my gamble. In those days before cell phones, I ended up spending the night cold and wet in my Camaro.
