Hello all,
My 99 x-1 is leaking from the fuel vent tube and when it comes out of the end of the tube below the frame it appears to be oil. I pulled the tube from the vent and a clear fluid comes out under a heavy throttle. The engine case is tight and not leaking. No brake lines are cut near the swing arm and there are no leaks out of the oil reservoir.
Any ideas?
The bike has always been tight and awesome.

First, you should post bike-specific questions in the proper forum (Old School, in this case) - you'll get a better response since people tend to browse the forums they're most familiar with. Quick Board is designed more for NON-motorcycle stuff; just a place for us Buellers to sit and chew the fat.

That said...the tube down low that's leaking oil is not your fuel tank overflow, it is your primary chaincase vent tube. If it is puking oil, chances are you have a leak at the crankshaft seal between the engine, and the primary. The engine is pressure-lubed; primary is splash-lubed. When that seal lets go, pressurized oil is pushed from the engine into the primary...and out the vent tube once the primary overfills. You will also probably note hard shifting, as this will affect clutch operation by being overfilled.

That's my guess, anyway, based on the description you posted above. Get yourself a shop manual so you can identify the various vent tube outlets and that will help with troubleshooting.

What Ratbuell said. Or try the Knowledge vault.

Quick and dirty check: Prop the bike up or lean it against a wall so it is (reasonably) vertical. Remove the clutch inspection cover. Might do to put a drain pan underneath. If oil comes out when the cover is removed, the primary is overfilled, meaning the crankshaft seal is leaking. . . .

Hope this helps, Dave

Yeah and engine oil is black while the tranny juice is typically not discolored at all.
If your tranny juice looks dark, it's engine oil getting in.

Actually if you take a lot of short rides...primary fluid will be milky with water moisture that doesn't burn off because of the short rides.
