Ooops. I may have added another foolish move to a lifetime populated with lunatic moves. I think I am the proud new owner of a 1965 Mustang. I figured that the assembled Badweb Brain Trust would be able to guide me to the knowledge I needed, once again, to deal with my self imposed lunacy. Any resident experts? |

I'm far from any kind of authority on Mustangs; however, I owned a 1965 Mustang back in 1970. I kept it for a year or two, then traded it for a '64 Chevy Impala. My Mustang was a dark green with black upholstery. Unfortunately, it was an automatic and not a four speed, but it was a pretty neat car. Since you're the guy with the camera and the skills to use it properly, I do expect to see some pictures of the new wheels soon. Enjoy! |

Looks like what would probably be a 289 cu in V8 with luxury package? Fancy wheel covers, white walls, rocker moldings, fancy interior trim and of course the convertible top. Does it have AC, power steering, power brakes, AM/FM radio with extra speakers? |

Stripped . . . Inline 6, Auto, no power anything. |

That inline 6 might surprise you... It won't have the growl of the V8, but it's likely got enough power to pull a boat up a mountain. I had a '64 dart with a slant 6, a '74 Nova with the straight 6, and a '95 F150 with a straight 6... all those motors were strong as hell. |

That looks all fixed and working. Where is the fun in that? Inline 6 sounds perfect. Easy to maintain, ran forever, not too much power for a chassis and drive train that ranges from "relaxed" to "terrifying" without ever touching "sporting". |

My mom had one of those for a first car. Three speed manual, AM radio, ONE barrel carb inline-6 I remember it as being gutless because my dad who was in the autobody trade was going to swap in a 351W. He put a lazy rear ratio and huge radiator. He never got the new engine. Ran out of time/money. End result was a car that could get over 30 miles per gallon and not quite pull third up hills. Also, had to cover the radiator with cardboard in the winters. |

I've got a 65 Convt. Same color/top as Courts. 289, 4-speed toploader, disk brakes, factory posi rear end, Centerline CRS1 15 inch wheels. 3rd owner, factory radio. Aluminum cross-flow radiator, 4bbl Carter 625 carb and ceramic coated headers. all new suspension components. Got it from father-in-law. Has 62,000 verified miles. No power anything. California car, rust free that gets waxed more than it is driven. Currently only stands for the remainder of the winter. |

The deal is not done .... but, falls into that "I'll kick myself later if I pass" category. The car has some rust ..... shows all the signs of being driven and enjoyed since my buddy, the 2nd owner, bought it from his aunt in high school in 1968. But..... a little bit of reading makes me think it'd be fun to drive for a summer or two ..... and if I choose to have the rust done... it's frankly not a huge deal on a Mustang. Like the old Volkswagens ...they benefit from being built in huge numbers which assures a ready supply of parts and skilled restorers. And .... think of buying a "good" 1996 S1 for $1,500 .... I can enjoy it for a couple years and get my money back anytime I want. Hmmmmmm .... probably the wrong group to ask for objectiv advise. Hahahaha |

I had a 69 Grande and a 70 Mach I. Loved them both. My friend, who I just hung the phone up with, had a 67 with the six banger. It wasn't fast but he never had to work on it either! That's a great looking convertible! |

You want Objective advice? For a purchase that's purely emotional? Come on, Court. A car like that is purely an emotional decision. It's nowhere near as safe as a new car, and it won't be as fuel efficient. It will require a lot more maintenance, as well. I bet it doesn't even have seat belts, unless they were added after it was sold. However; it will put a smile on your face when you take it out with the top down in the summer time. And that's what it's all about. And I bet you can get your money back when you decide to part ways with it. |

And .... think of buying a "good" 1996 S1 for $1,500 .... I can enjoy it for a couple years and get my money back anytime I want. As an FYI: here in Europe you pretty much can't buy S1s and if one does pop up, here in The Netherlands, they're - at minimum - going for 6500 euros. And in Germany, they're heading towards 8, 9 and in some cases 10k. If I were in the States, I'd definitely be in the market for sort of original S1 Buells. People over on your end of the world are bound to catch on sooner or later that those bikes are going to worth something. A hell of a lot more than 1500 bucks anyway. ... DO IT man! You know the provenance of the car, surely buying for good $$$, you have NO IDEA how many grins you'll get and cause, holy cannoli! Plus, someday down the line, you'll make Jim's life brighten considerably! I'm hoping to snag a nice drop top sometime, but a 1965 'Stang?!?! That's a no brainer... you're using your heart, not the brain, to decide. Brain only for a cursory $$$/sanity check! Have fun! Spring is coming soon... |

A friend has one just like that's completely restored. Red with a white top and white interior, straight 6 and automatic. His father in law owned it, and had it restored. By the time it was done, he was too sick to drive. My friend can't afford to insure it, so it sits! The restoration cost way more than the car is worth. That family has a thing about hanging on to cars that don't get driven for ever. They rot in place. Sad. Don't let this nice blue one fall to that fate! |

Go for it!! At the least, address the rust, care for it well, and enjoy. The worst that can happen is after the joy, you will recoup the investment. And, most likely, it will appreciate more than a 401K. Other than the expected Mustang websites, PM me for a couple of Mustang dudes . . . Hope this helps, Dave |

Actually . . . I am singing the EcoBoost blues at the moment . . . my beloved Ford Escape, with the 2.0 EcoBoost, has been one of the best cars I've ever had . . . 140,000 joyful miles one the past 4 years. But alas . . . I had the transmission replaced . . . 6 months ago . . find out this week one of the seals is leaking. . . a seal on the transfer case is leaking and the tie rod ends are shot . . .the leaking soaked the $289 under motor mat . . so it's time for EcoBoost go bye-bye. The new Super Duty has less than 2,000 miles but, at 8 mpg, it's not a daily driver . . . so if looks like in the span of 60 days I end up with 2 new cars and 1 old one . . . gads. I am in the 2017 Escape vs. 2017 Outback battle at the moment. I went and drove the Macan . . . cute but no match for the Escape. |

Drive that Mustang before you buy it, ah never mind. If you can play with it for a couple of years and get back out it doesn't matter. Last one I had of that vintage and lacking option package was a 1967 el Camino. 6 cyl, automatic with manual everything, and no AC. While I lived in Tampa no less. Good thing those vent windows turned around(except for the occasional bee). My point being, you can look and feel cool riding around in your little hotrod, but it will be slow, poor stopping, ill handling, not safe in case of an accident, and on a hot(or cold)day, just a lot of work to drive. On top of that anywhere you go you are a bullseye target of theft. Won't be able to park it anywhere or leave anything in it. Yep, car guy all of my life, and now I have said it. I don't like old hotrods anymore. Too much work to drive one even. |

I sat in one of those Jeep Renegades at the dealer yesterday. I was expecting it to feel kind of cramped in the cockpit. I was pleasantly surprised. Not what I was looking for though. |

The snow driving electronics are what impresses me most. You are right about room that you don't expect. Not a tarsus mind you. I was tagging 32 mpg at 70 mph with an automatic. Get the black one. |

I've not checked out the escape, but after owning 3 Outbacks, we probably won't be buying another. Quality is not what it used to be. Service has been worse. |

Make sure there is no rust in the shock towers or front frame rails. Those cars are notorious for that in my area. Very expensive to fix it right. Being a convert if the doors aren't aligned it could be a sign of a week floor pan, and or rockers. In the area your in it should be in good shape. I assume it's a drum brake car, a good upgrade would be to put front disk brakes on. Matt |
