Planning a road trip to visit a lifelong friend who lives just outside of Durango, Colorado. I'm taking the northern route option, stopping in KC MO at Danny Edward's BBQ to get a couple pounds of burnt ends to share with my friend. The place is only open from 11-3 each day, so I've got a local courier company picking up my order and I'll get it from them. I plan to camp on the road somewhere west of KC KS, get some good old fashioned sleep on the cold, hard earth staring up at the stars. I'm doing just over 800 miles each day, and I'll take pictures along my route. I'm taking the Spyder, not the bike. I've got too many things I need to carry, but unless it's pouring rain I'll have the top wide open the whole time. I am sooooo looking forward to this. The wife and kids are most likely going down to Disney World. 2 days of open roads and beautiful scenery, 3 days relaxing in southern Colorado's high country, and 2 more days of open roads to get home. It's like a dream, and it's coming true very soon...

I live in Valley Falls, KS, a slight detour north of I-70 and NW of KC. You're welcome to layover at my place. Can put you up on an air bed or if you're determined to camp out, Perry Reservoir has some COE and State parks. |

That's a mighty generous offer, I may well take you up on that! I'll be in your area late on Thursday May 25th... with some BBQ on board. |

Perry Reservoir was the site where the 1996 Buell S1 Lightning did lots and lots and lots of "unofficial" winter testing . . . Test Mule B-031 spent time secretly locked in Grantville . . making daily trips to Perry. Valley Falls . . and any of that area up on highway 92 or highway 4 is fun . . . Enjoy ! |

Awesome deal, looks and sounds like a kickass trip! Hope you have a great time! What kind of Spyder are you talking about? Also, I see you might come home through Arkansas. I live in Sharp County, and if you come my way there is a spare bedroom available for you to stay in. Disclaimer: I have three dogs. |

Looks like a fun trip! If you have the time, go over Red Mountain Pass (the Million Dollar Highway) You'll love it! |

This one...
It would sort of add to the epicness of the journey itself if I were to meet with 2 different BadWeBers along my way.... This is starting to look like an even better trip. Sharp County looks like it has a lot of good driving roads... it would add approximately 120 miles to my trip which isn't really much at all. Time to make some adjustments to the spreadsheet... lol

Red Mountain Pass... It's very likely I will, because my friend is going to be in a mountain bike race up in Silverton that Saturday, which is very close by there. Man, the anticipation of this is killing me. |

I don't know how much mileage you get in a tank but you should avoid getting gas in Illinois. It's not huge but usually .20 cents cheaper in Missouri. With food and gas stops you'll make St. Louis in roughly 10 hours. KC is just 4 more. Getting to the West side you can just figure a 15 hour day. Oh, and take 670 through KC to save some time. Have a great trip! |

Matt; if you have the time, go north on US 550 to Ouray from Silverton. That's the Million Dollar Highway. I guaranty you'll love it. You'll be going over Molas Pass going to Silverton from Durango. It a very nice road, as well. I've said it many times, and I still believe it's true that God created Colorado so that motorcyclists would know what heaven is going to be like. You will want to go back again. |

And if you can hit 491 (I had the pleasure of being the first Buell on the Million dollar Highway and on 491, when it was 666 . . the "Devil's Highway") you will be amazed. By the way . . the highway is named for being the first highway in American to cost $1M/mile . . . you will see why. |

I've been up and down the full length of 666 before it was 491 several times... wide open spaces abound.

And I thought the Million Dollar Highway was named for all the million dollar views. Of which there are many. You learn something new every day. |

I also heard it was named that because of all the millions that were mined in the area. I've run from Durango to Ouray several times and Crusty is right, it's a bikers heaven! The "old town" in Durango is a lot of fun at night if you end up down there. The Budget Inn has decent rooms for very reasonable prices. Best bang for the buck that I've found over the years. I'm telling you this because Silverton is very small and usually fills up quickly. |

Hey Matthew- I've already taken off 5/26 thru 5/28, as the 27th is finally my "Big Five-Oh"... looks like your timing is barely off of mine! Other than just taking the time off, I haven't really laid down any definite plans... maybe a whiskey tasting? Holler! |

Brad, I will be passing through Kansas into Colorado on the 26th, so it doesn't look like the timing will work out. |

Greg, I will be staying in Bayfield at my friend's place. We are just going up to Silverton for the afternoon. I got your PM, will definitely call if I get in a jam! I assume you have super glue in stock. |

Whatever you do, be sure to put on your parking brake as you exit the vehicle. Leave it in first gear, too. |

You could park on top of a tube of super glue and give it a minute. |

I'd recomment you to get an airbed in your vehicle. Those airbeds at crazy sales would be a pleasant choice. Their duration indicates the good quality, and the manual is written in clear sentences. Also, going a trip with a comfortable air mattress will bring you more fun in the journey. You can sleep tight on it, and avoid the tickling weed in the wilderness. |

Really? All the way from Australia just to sell air mattresses on BadWeB? |

Yep sure would on carrying ear protection and sun block. Did a trip to Bowling Green a couple year ago with the top off the Vette. Now I carry headphones that are noise canceling that allow me to hear traffic or music and phone, but not wind. I did not think that being in the wind on the bike would be much different, but the full face helmet does a lot more than being an emergency skid lid. |

Box of foam earplugs in the glove department. Check. Noise cancelling headphones. Check. Leather driving hat. Check. I recently did a 500 mile day with the top down, all over north Georgia, parts of Tennessee and North Carolina... learned these things first hand. Keep the tips coming, the time is drawing nigh.
