I'm not Jewish, but every year when Hanukkah comes up, it reminds me of the Hornsbys, an old couple that ran a general store in my home town.

You never met a more caring couple anywhere. They were old, with pure white hair. And they talked funny. English with an odd accent that I later learned was German with Yiddish thrown in.

I lived in a very poor neighborhood by most standards, and most of the people were migrant farm workers, including my family. If a raggedy kid showed up at the store, Mrs. Hornsby would give him or her a candy before sending them on their way.

Being the curious sort, I asked them where they were from, since obviously they were not from around here. They were Sudaten Jews that survived a concentration camp, complete with the tattooed numbers on their arms.

Mr. Hornsby one told me, son look around you, and never allow what happened to us and our family ever happen to you.

Over 50 years ago now, And I still think of them every year at this time. They left a mark on me for life. Thank You Mr and Mrs Hornsby.

Happy Hanukkah to my tribal brothers and sisters and Merry Christmas to my Christian cousin's. It's been a long time since the two holidays coincided so closely , hopefully a sign of good things to come for the USA, Israel and the world.

We have the best of both worlds in our house: Christmas AND Hanukkah! We even found a Youtube Menorah candle burning for our 70" TV which is a change from the video Yule Log.
