I saw ELP as the headline act back in 1974 at "August Jam" at Charlotte Motor Speedway; it was the east coast version of the California Jam that happened that same year. ELP put on a hell of a show.
Fellow ELP alumnus Keith Emerson committed suicide back in March. Apparently he was suffering from alcoholism and depression, and he had a nerve condition that was making it progressively harder for him to play. Very sad.
WAY at the other end of ELP's musical spectrum was this tune. I didn't understand exactly what I was hearing when I first heard it, but I liked it. It's mainly a showcase for Emerson's keyboard work with a long drum solo (with drum-triggered synthesizer) by Carl Palmer, but there's a little of Greg Lake in there too:
When they performed this live, Carl Palmer's drum kit (complete with a full drum set, 2 gongs, bells, etc.) was on a elevating turntable that rose ~15 feet in the air and slowly spun around while strobe lights went off and smoke rose up. It was pretty damn impressive.
Oh yea, I remember thinking how cool the album artwork was for this. Many years later I found out it was done by H R Giger, who became better known for his work designing the Xenomorph for the Aliens movies.
