So, I've always wondered about this. Why on gods green earth do people cover the license plates on cars or motorcycles when they post ads for sale? It's not like people can see the plate EVERY time the vehicle is on the road...what's the big secret? Sorry. Random thought for the day. |

I guess they could run it thru the DMV and get your address, then steal it ? |

Could do that while it's parked at the grocery store too... |

If you have that level of access, I suppose you could. You could also do that, assuming that level of access, for every car you see on the road. Hardly anyone obscures their plate while driving their car. Hint: It's illegal. |

Hardly anyone obscures their plate while driving their car. Hint: It's illegal. I've seen it done with Duct Tape on the toll way in Illinois where they will track you down using your license plate. I would think the ticket you are likely to get would far outweigh the cost of simply paying the tolls. People make bad decisions. As to the OP, I wouldn't bother when listing a car for sale, but I've done it posting pictures online for other purposes. It's just a matter of protecting my personal information. Which, as I think this through, when you post a picture of your car for sale, you no longer control that image. You have zero control over how, or where it may get used/abused. It's easy enough to edit a picture. Why not? |

Anyone can take a photo of your car, anytime, anywhere. It's just....silly. I don't get it. |

I guess the thought is that if I knew I had a yellow uly, and I wanted to go on a multi state crime spree, I could google up a picture of a yellow uly, and read the plate, and make an exact duplicate of it, and put it on my yellow Uly. It would all get straightened out eventually, but it would likely cause headaches for you before it's over. |

I could see a yellow uly on the road one day, or in a parking lot, and do the exact same thing. |

But, with that photo you post (on whatever forum or facebook club or for sale site) they can gather a little more info about you and if possible will follow you "online"... save a little spot in their memory for when they need to rob someone like you... OR for when you piss them off from some stupid remark you make online. They watching. (PS: Not ME,...THEM!!) |

Yeah, that came from commuting 60 miles each way, 5 days a week. You can also see, they are worn right out to the sides, no chicken strips left smart guy. |

That, and I had just rolled it through the dirt to get it on the grass.... I should have wiped it off. |

Now I could get a red firebolt, make a fake license plate, go rob a bank, and yell "my name is Pwnzor and you'll never take me alive!" before riding off into the night. They'd come knocking on your door. |

I thought about a vanity plate for my bikes, but figured I would be an easy target if I pissed someone off. I might still do it when I register my new Firebolt in California. |

People walk into my wife's office and say "nice car" to her... because her first name is on the license plate. She finds a way to let them know she holds a concealed carry permit, and they never seem to bother her after that. |

Airbozo, that's why I stopped putting stickers on my vehicles. "It was a black Silverado" wouldn't necessarily single me out. "It was a black Silverado with two American flags on the back glass".... yeah, that was me. |

That is why I'm thinking of loosing the Vet plates when I move out of this state. |
