Looks like they want to encourage oil to flow from the scraper rings. The only issue I can perhaps see is any sort of a ridge would act as a stress concentrator. I think older vehicles had magic lines on the skirts like that. I can't think of a specific example though. |

I wonder if the groove could potentially act like the blood groove in a knife/sword blade, channeling oil into itself while reducing the amount of oil between the skirt and cylinder. |

The idea is to wipe the cylinders and either drain out the sides of the skirt during the up stroke, or thru the drain holes in the oil ring lands during the down stroke. According to the website it is to clear the cylinders of excess fuel contaminants and debris under heavy power adder loads like nitrous oxide in which you have to run the mix very rich. Some manufacturers do something similar by using 1/4 skirt pistons. Personally, I like a full skirt piston to control piston rock better with less fear of breaking a skirt. For years, I ran Kawasaki KZ based drag bike engines that ran around 145 hp normally aspirated, with 75-100 hp of nitrous on top. It takes a stout, stable piston to take it without failure. I takes a lot of fuel to keep it out of the lean failure area, but lean enough so it does not detonate. I love the smell of nitrous in the morning! |

So the intended effect is opposite of my theory. |

Oh and look at this piston I found when looking for ancient grooved skirts: http://www.vintagenorton.com/2013/08/cast-iron-rac ing-piston.html It's a piston for people that don't like pistons! |

They explain about the X groove at 11:00 in the program. NOTE: There will commercials, even when skipping to 11 minute mark. https://www.powernationtv.com/episode/EP2016-05/ca dillac-lsa-427-stroker-part-1 |
