I had quite the epiphany today. A good friend of mine, a successful woman, posted of the trauma she was sharing with a group of women at starbucks, and the angst the mothers felt trying to explain to their daughters why "the girl didn't win". They concluded that obviously it had to be because she was a girl.

It made me sad.

Here is the conversation I had with my daughter this morning taking her to school. She is an 8th grader.

Me: Audrey, how do you feel about Trump winning the election.
Audrey: I think he's a jerk. But I'm glad he won instead of Clinton.
Me: Why?
Audrey: Between what Clinton did in Syria, and the way she was interacting with Russia, I was a lot more worried about another world war than I was about having a jerk be president.

That starbucks crowd was teaching their daughters that they can only succeed when others act differently because she is a girl. I'm teaching my daughter that she will succeed because she is smart, thoughtful, and busts her ass. And teaching her that choices aren't defined by gender.

(This is the same girl who, in 5th grade took a SIG P220 and put her first round in the 7 ring at 25 yards. *And* repaired Court's front brake caliper : ) ).

My girls might not be able to shoot, but they both know Hillary is a crook... and my eldest voted for the first time.

Best advice on raising sons may be ancient Persian.

"Teach them horsemanship, and archery. Teach them to despise all lies."

You raise women children the same with an extra layer of acute awareness of the nature of men.

I also teach martial arts to college kids & there's a good book on teaching gals. "The Armored Rose".
Occasionally a class on open hand & always teaching the basic philosophy of the Arts. Level 2 is modern warfare & training techniques, sports medicine, programming the Combat Computer. ( gamer language is just as valid as monastic. )

Man! I'm telling you there were grown women crying at work today. They were so sad about not being able to break through the glass ceiling. My wife won't even talk to me, accusing me of being one of those white male militia types...really?
This is going to take a while to get through this.

It's not because H is a woman that didn't win. It's because she's not the right woman to win. I may have voted for Fiorina, I may have voted for Carson but we didn't have those choices. Cry babies and millennial protesters will have it better with Trump but only use older folks know this.
I'm glad I don't need to go buy an AR and large amounts of ammo- yet

Find me a young Margaret Thatcher, and I'll vote for her.

She's got to be as sharp as a coffin nail, and as hard as the hammer that drives it.

She didn't lose because she's a woman.

It has NOTHING to do with gender.

She lost because she's a CRIMINAL.

I have a son who is on the other side of the political spectrum, and I respect his decisions just as well. He is young, so he is learning the same things I learned while young, but he is thoughtful and passionate and is trying to be just and kind.

So I have no problem with people on either side being thoughtful. And I depend on a thoughtful opposition to grow.

I'm just sad for parents raising their daughters to view everything through the lens of gender. I can think of no better way to perpetuate another generation of sexism.

Good on ya Reepicheep!

I have two kids, Boy and girl, 8 and 6 respectively. We had a similar talk and my daughter said she didn't like H "because she tells a lot of lies Dad and lieing is wrong"

My Boy then chimed and and commented "YEA AND SHE SMELLS LIKE A BAG OF FARTS"

the difference between boys and girls

And that's the issue with quotas. People think "they didn't get hired because they're black/female/latino/purple/old/whatever".

No....they didn't get hired because THEYRE NOT QUALIFIED.

Quotas feed the discrimination cop-out. If you want a job, learn how to DO the damn job. I don't care if you're female/male/old/young/brown/purple or green. If you can do the job, you're hired. If you can't...you aren't. Simple. Don't hide behind color or gender or race - LEARN SOME SKILLS.

Not everyone gets a trophy.

But that's another discussion entirely....

I'm so glad both my kids are in their mid thirties. I don't care what they do as long as they do it. They were raised in a pagan biker household and the thoughts that what you spread out into the world came back three times over. So far, I'm proud of them. They seem to be thriving in their own way and finally self sufficient! ( I waited a while on that one!)
Ratbuell: I'd like to hear more on the trophy idea when you finally bring that discussion to the forefront! The world is so not simple anymore from my viewpoint!
Wishing all great holidays, especially those of you who are veterans for tomorrow is ya'lls day! Take care and ride safe!

Count me as one who would love to be able to vote for Audrey K for President.

Children need respect for honesty and values. These are traits that are blind to gender.

Manners, the ability to form, understand, share and follow your own thoughts and ideas is huge.

When those traits appear in concert with a keen sense of direction and honed skills . . . no one can be stopped by gender, race, ethnicity or creed.

Toss in the ability to rebuild the brake caliper that grown ups swore, and fought about, couldn't be done and you're on the way to raising a person who's character will take them anywhere they want to go.

I'd rather go into the real world with Audrey's charm, intellect and values than just some feigned feeling of entitlement.

I've two sons, in their late 30's, who amaze me . . . as men, husbands, fathers and professionals daily.

I'd place my be on Audrey doing amazing things. I just hate to see her grow up and force me to find another source for things like repairing Apple adapters . . . . . or was that Jack K? Hahahaha . . .

Kid's are the most amazing thing we ever encounter in this life . . . well, except perhaps grandkids.

:-)

I was saddened by a post a good friend put on Facebook the morning after the election. She's been a very vocal support of women's rights, LGBT, etc., as am I.

She posted that she had to explain to her sons (both white males) the privilege of being white. While LGBT, women's rights, people of color, etc. will live in fear for their safety...

Not fear that that two men would lose the right to marry (I support).

Not transgendered people people losing rights (I support equal rights for all).

Not black people losing the right to vote.

Nothing rational. The 'logic' went right to Trump's presidency inspired all the bigots in the country to systematically oppress, to the point of being openly violent, to anyone they feel is different.

I didn't argue, much. There's no point. Nothing I have pointed out to her, including Trump's support of the LGBT community, etc. She, and 'they' vehemently deny anything he may have done in the positive, while happily ignoring everything Hillary has done in the negative.

My comment to her was 'confirmation bias'. You only see what confirms your viewpoint. You associate with those who reflect your perspective on the world.

Only slightly off-topic was my trophy comment.

It stems from the mentality that "all kids need to get a trophy so nobody feels left out". How dare you hurt someone's feelings by not giving them a trophy? Doesn't matter that they didn't win. Doesn't matter they didn't play. Doesn't matter they can't spell "redundant" in the spelling bee. Not getting a trophy isn't *fair*...

Which, of course, negates the entire concept of "trophy". When the actual winners (spelling bees, baseball teams, A-students, whatever) receive the exact same "reward" as everyone else whether they actually performed or not...it ruins not only the value of the trophy for those who actually earned it, but it also teaches those who didn't earn it...to expect handouts, whether they try or not. They lose all drive to succeed. There is no motivation to get good at anything; no motivation to even SEARCH for something they're good at. It breeds...laziness. And, later in life...quotas. Because when there's nobody actually qualified for a position....you find other "reasons" to hire a person. Color or gender take the place of skills and ability.

But in the end...or the beginning, as it were...not everyone deserves a trophy.

I've had fun on Facebook. Whenever one of my friends posts one of those idiotic extrememst "you must hate LBGT if you voted for Trump", I reply saying that I will offer free training and help arm anyone who can legally possess a firearm and who is in fear of a Trump government.

I tell them I will do this so that when they send government troops to take the LBGT to the concentrations camps, we can die together protecting LBGT freedom.

And it's not a joke, I'd be happy to do it, and it's about time the left wises up and figures out that government empowered to grant you freedoms is empowered to take them as well.

It got at least one good head tilt. When you re-frame their irrational but honest fear of a tyrannical government, with the accurate statement that the first and second amendment are the two most important constitutional controls to prevent tyranny, and make them suddenly understand the reason why they should be armed and trained, it kind of explodes their head a little (in a good way).

I welcome them to the world of truly free people.

I have always liked Georges Clemenceau response when told that he should disown his son because he was a communist. He had a wise man's insight into youth:
