Good to see a Uly out there getting some dirt on its tires. Although their treatment isn't that surprising. I got the same kind of reception when I once rode my R100GS into Edwards AFB through an unauthorized entry point. Pretty standard for military installations. Do love the sensational British press.

They knew exactly where they were, and that they might encounter "camo dudes".

Funny that nobody got shot, tased, beaten, or otherwise roughed up. They complied with the officers and were on their way in moments.

It seems like a pretty stupid stunt to pull knowing that the camo dudes generally put you in lockup and call the deputy sheriff who issues you a (minimum) $700 fine for so much as putting a toe across the border of Area 51. They have cameras all over as well as sensors planted all around the perimeter of the property (including under the access road). They know you're coming LONG before you get there.

I was in Las Vegas for a conference ~15 years ago and a co-worker and I decided to drive ~100 miles to Rachel, NV and then 15 miles down the dirt road approaching the entrance of Area 51 just so we could say we had been there. You crest a hill and come to this sign:

area 51

The camo dudes were waiting in a truck on a hill overlooking the road when we got there. The actual gate to Area 51 is supposedly another mile or so past this sign. We carefully turned around (as we had planned to do) and drove 15 miles back out to the paved road, with the camo dudes following us the whole way.

Yea, while this is almost exactly what we saw when we got there (sign, camo dudes, etc.), that pic was found on the 'net. We weren't brave enough to take a pic of the sign with the camo dudes in plain sight.

Lots of interesting info on Area 51 here: http://www.dreamlandresort.com

Smart

The fine print used to have a "use of lethal force" statement.

Use of lethal force is authorized when you get to the boundary.

It's kind of like walking into Fort Knox and being surprised by the uniformed officers who greet you.

The idiots are getting undeserved press.

As it says in the "Area 51 FAQ" at www.dreamlandresort.com:

quote:

What happens if I cross the Area 51 border ?

If you cross the border of the restricted area surrounding Area 51 FOR ANY REASON, the security guards, known as Cammo Dudes, will detain you. You will be pulled out of your vehicle, and held at gunpoint, face down on the ground. The cammos will call the Lincoln County Sheriff.

When the sheriff shows up (usually about an hour later) he will arrest you and you may get to see the inside of the Lincoln County jail, while the sheriff investigates your story.

If he concludes that you accidentally crossed the line, you will be released after receiving a $650 citation for trespassing and a notice by the "Installation Commander" of an unspecified "Military Installation" that you are not welcome there. In more severe cases the fine may be up to $5000 and possibly up to 6 months in jail.

Stupid games, stupid prizes Etc...

It's one thing if you're blasting along in the desert on a dirtbike but these clowns were actively poking at the bear.

I's sad to see that they have the same bike as me.

Don't get me wrong, I have done my fair share of idiot crap but I was in my teens on a KLR.
These were grown-assed adults on streetbikes with absurd instrumentation.

If I were the security, I would have impounded the bikes and stripsearched the guys looking for any media that records where they were and destroy it.
Those guards were being extremely nice. Perhaps to the point of fault.
For example, the video is now out that shows:
Their vehicle
The anticipated response
Faces of security
Approximate location of their standby stakeout location.

I agree it was stupid, and they deserve whatever fines and hassles they get.

On the other hand, it also shows that if you go there, you will get arrested in a fairly uninteresting way and discover absolutely nothing about the base and what they do there. Which, given the tourist draw that this base has, would be the kind of anti-marketing you want.

In fact maybe they should sell over priced drinks, stale pretzels, and create long lines to get into the first gate, then turn them back at the second gate (showing them nothing). : )

I think the nearby town of Rachel, NV, which is basically 100 miles from civilization in any direction, owes its continued existence to the tourist draw of Area 51. The main business there is the "Little A'Le'Inn" (http://www.littlealeinn.com/), a bar/hotel/restaurant.

There was a very small gas station/convenience store when we were there, which has since closed. Make sure you have a full tank if you decide to visit!

While I view what they did as kind of immature (it's testing to see where the line of authority really is), did they do anything that warrant's arrest? Did they cross any line that said do not cross? From what I gather, they simply went right up to that line and stopped, just to see what would happen. If that's the case, any arrest/fine would never stand up in court, and the authorities should get a judicial smack down if that's what they are doing. Stick a toe over that line, and I really don't care what happens to you. Did I miss something?

BTW, our government is playing games with that line also. If that line were important, even as a buffer zone, at least gate the road at that point so that an unobservant idiot can't simply "accidentally" drive past that line unaware. I'm pretty sure that the "camo dudes" aren't the security that you need to be concerned with in that area. Those guys just play the visible security at the outer areas of the security buffer.

The "camo dudes" could pop you . . . take you 10' inside their fence . . let you get eaten by coyotes and never have any questions asked.

If only border patrol could do work like that.

I wonder which is more likely - US citizens getting roughed up by the government or illegal aliens getting roughed up by the gov...

nevermind, I already know the answer to that. At least under the current regime.

The military has ways of making sure that things they don't want seen don't get seen. Would you want to be one of those 500? I sure as hell don't.

I think it's several miles across open desert before you'd get to anything they don't want you to see, and they'd have clear warning of your approach a mile or two before you get to the property line. They could probably fly a team or two in from nearby Nellis AFB in plenty of time to intercept a large group, and if they couldn't I'd imagine they'd resort to more extreme measures.

The security is sitting at their center, monitoring ground traffic - radar and acoustic and direct view... and when these self-important douchebags show up, put down their coffee and discuss the "oh shit, you want this? I got paperwork." Or they send out a UAS for a close look

Except for "Camo Dudes" nobody steps outside.
