Small generator would be nice to keep the fridge going, fan, and charge phones/tablets. Will definitely get one if I stay in FL.

My little ~20 year old Coleman is 2000W and will run a fridge (actually a full size and a small one), plus a few lights, plus keep the phones charged, plus run the coffee maker (although it does bog a bit when you hit the "brew" switch). It's gotten us through a couple of hurricanes and 2 or 3 ice storms.

A former co-worker of mine bought a natural gas conversion kit for his generator and used it this weekend. He says the conversion downrates the generator a bit, but it's awfully nice having an "infinite" supply of fuel.

The natural gas or LP conversion also eliminates the "fouled carb" crap from ethanol fuel and insufficient run time.

That in itself is a great thing to not have to worry about.

My 1k will not run a coffee maker, but it will run the small fridge in my travel trailer. (Edit: It also runs on propane. Draws next to no propane and works great. )

Thank God for percolators. Hadn't had perc'ed coffee in years. Think I'll start using it more often.

There was a city wide curfew from 7pm to 7am following the storm and power outtage. I have mixed feelings about this. It could help reduce looting, but I'm also not comfortable with population control measures.

Well, I tried to get down to Florida but had to abort my attempt. Couldn't get past Lumberton, NC. I spoke to someone who has a friend heading north and couldn't get past Dillon, SC so the roads must be REALLY F***** between those two locations. After two fruitless attempts I turned back and instead I'm visiting friends who've moved out of NY and I haven't seen in awhile. I'm in Bristow, VA today and will be heading to Danielsville, PA tomorrow. After that I'll just head home. At least I got to make SOME lemonade out of these lemons.

I've got a bank of deep cycle batteries that can charge by solar, or by using my little 900W generator.

The batteries will run my deep freezer and fridge for about 8 hours. The generator charges the batteries in about 6 hours. Solar will charge them in about 10 hours.

My Sister and Brother in Law live just outside of Fayetteville, NC. I haven't been able to reach them either by e-mail or phone. I really hope they're OK, but it sucks not knowing.

Crusty, I'm about 3-1/2 hours from Fayetteville. I'll run down there and check on them personally if you want, just say the word.

I've got a text into Kristi and Carlos, they're down in that general neck of the woods, asking for a status report from that area, will keep you advised.

I googled and found this:

quote:

The Cape Fear River in Fayetteville crested at 58.9' Sunday night and is currently at 46.6' and falling. The record is 68.9'. It could stay in flood stage through Thursday.

That sounds like it's not that bad there. Fayetteville is ~35 miles or so north of the worst flooding.

From Kristi:

quote:

Record level flooding and power outages throughout the east. We are good. Water in our town but not to record levels. Power came on last night...

I just got an e-mail from my sister. Everybody is OK. She said that she's never seen so much water since she moved there 30 years ago. They have no water damage at their house, and the power and internet was out for a few days, but conditions are steadily improving.

I was getting pretty concerned; it's a relief knowing they're fine.

Now, maybe this damnable headache will ease up.

Jerry, thanks for the offer. I appreciate it.

First place I could find an open hotel with a vacancy was in Fayetteville, after I got turned around in Lumberton. The place was pretty skeevy, but they didn't have hourly rates so they couldn't've been THAT bad. I've stayed in worse and I was just TIRED of riding all day. Didn't fall into bed until almost midnight.

Sounds like you've taken in all that Fayetteville has to offer. They do have a cracker barrel now. It's right down the road from the TWO waffle houses on the same intersection!

I hate army towns.

I hate army towns.

Don't ever move to Colorado Springs, then. When I lived there in the '70s, there were 5 different Military installations there. Fort Carson, NORAD, Peterson Field Air Force Base, Ent AF Base and the US Air Force Academy. There were lots of GIs and lots of businesses that made their money off them.

And what's wrong with having two Waffle Houses at one intersection? Around here, there are two Dunkin' Donuts at many intersections. I like Waffle House as a general rule. The breakfast at Waffle House tastes a damn sight better than the cardboard pastry at Drunkin Donuts.

Hard to beat a Waffle House meal for the price.

Of course, don't watch their hands with those grimy gloves touching everything including your food and their own faces, hair, door knobs, literally everything.

Still, fun to watch the banter between the cooks, wait staff and customers.

I actually enjoy waffle house (hashbrowns especially). But two waffle houses on one intersection... it's amazing there's not a permanent grease spot between the two.

I've spent some time at Carson, the environment there is way better than Fayetteville. Colorado Springs has a lot of nice parts. I still have a Mountain Chalet sticker on the thermos I use every day. Plus you're right next to Cheyenne Mountain, it's fun to fantasize about what tippy-top secrets are lurking in that mountain.
Plus, top notch skiing just a couple hours away.

I think I'm derailing this thread... my bad.

Some dams burst up north of Bragg and they issued an evac,I wonder if that's why we were without water for awhile. I assumed water treatment plants would have backup generators, I wonder if the flooding caused some contamination and that's why they shut it off.
