I'm confused. I realize we've been asked to fly flags at half staff but when has it been proper to fly at half staff for a foreign leader? I'll have to go look up past world leaders - Thatcher comes to mind. Shimon Perez was both loved and loathed by Israelis. Is this just a diplomatic version of "everybody gets a trophy?" I mean no disrespect to Perez... just wondering about the protocol here. |

Turns out by Presidential decree: http://www.usflag.org/nff.half.staff.html
quote:FLYING THE FLAG AT HALF-STAFF: The pertinent section of the Flag Code says, "by order of the President, the flag shall be flown at half-staff upon the death of principal figures of the United States Government and the Governor of a State, territory, or possesion, as a mark of respect to their memory. In the event of the death of other officials or foreign dignitaries, the flag is to be displayed at half-staff according to Presidential orders, or in accordance with recognized customs or practices not inconsistent with law.

I suspect it was one of those cases where Obama lied about respecting an Israeli and his staff just went ahead and issued the order without telling him. How many times has the President of the United States flat out told us he didn't know about some action on the part of his regime until he saw it on the news? ( seriously, this is a quiz. 7? 9? ) It's really obvious that Obama is a pathological liar. And/or his staff is afraid to tell him anything that might upset him. I bet both. |
