The Physics of that is awesome. So's the Rider. You go girl. To do this without crashing, you have to be under power, legs pumping keeping the push against the air, so that you can regulate the distance between your front wheel and the crash bar. If the aerodynamics are such that you are being pushed from behind, you can't control the distance with brakes. Any drop in speed will suck you out of the pocket. Or you ram the tow vehicle. |

No disrespect meant to the bicyclists; that's one hell of an achievement. But I wonder how fast a motorcycle would go if it had a wind blocking lead car? |

I hopped in the draft of a van doing about 45 mph in a residential zone once. It was hard to catch the draft as the van passed me, but once there, was very surprised how easy it was to stay with him at 45 mph. I got dropped as soon as it turned up hill though. 147 mph is insane though, and would take a lot of power just getting your mass up to speed before tiring out. Quite an achievement! I wonder how they coordinate the acceleration of the car and the bike. Maybe I should read the whole article when I get time. |

Quite an achievement! I wonder how they coordinate the acceleration of the car and the bike. I believe it says they tow the bike up to part speed (90 MPH or so), then slowly accelerate from there with the rider keeping pace. I imagine it requires some CAREFUL coordination. |

And an extremely high gearing. In my prime, I had a Viscount Aerospace Pro ultralight with a 54 in front and a 12 in back. I passed a lady in a VW bug and her speedo said she was going 45mph. I was pumping like mad... Z |

A buddy of mine got a speeding ticket on his racing bike for doing 40 in a 30. To be fair, he was a jerk, and deserved a ticket for mouthing off to the cop, but seriously? So about 6 of us showed up for the hearing, on bikes, in spandex. When he went up to be tried, the judge looked at him, looked at the ticket, asked what car he was driving, "my bicycle" then yelled at the cop for wasting his time. |

I got 53 MPH on my 53/12 it was downhill of course but damn if I didn't want a 56/11. Going fast on a bicycle is every bit as fun as doing it on a motorcycle, IMO. |
