http://bottpower.com/pikes-peak-project-chapter-on e/ They're apparently going to put an XBRR engine in one of their frames. This should be REALLY interesting. 150 HP and 330 pounds is the target. |

They stated the altitude is a concern for the rider, too. Why not use O2 tanks like high altitude climbers do? |

Turbocharge the rider! Nitrous Oxide would probably be a bad idea though. |

You know, they say the altitude will affect you and it probably does by slowing your reaction times and such, but spend a week at altitude and the effects diminish significantly. But I used to live there, so I never had an issue. Been up that trail dozens of times, but only once "officially" racing (back in the late '70's). |

because there's no need to use O2 tanks. For only spending a short time at "altitude", the only real issue is AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness), which only a relatively small percentage of people experience on a 14er. |

I'm curious how they plan to make similar power to the XBRR's figures while converting it to sidedraft, and likely trying to make the ports share a manifold. Power will be down at least 15% compared to split downdraft manifolds. |

If I remember right, I think the over all record holder had on board breathing oxygen for his run at it. |

I guess the other possibility would be to modify the frame to allow the downdraft TB's to be retained, but then where do you put the fuel? Hmmm, seems like I remember something about a frame arrangement which avoids that problem...

Hello, I am David from Bottpower. Thank you for your interest on our project. For this bike with the XBRR engine, we plan to keep the downdraft TB. Our bike has a secondary fueltank (under the rear shock) and because it is a short race (12.42 miles), we will have enough fuel with the secondary tank. We will use the top tank as an airbox. In order to keep the downdraft TB we have two possibilities, to modify the frame or to modify the intakes to have them a little bit more separated from the middle plane of the bike, running the spine frame in between. |

Good luck to the team David! And that Kriega gear looks quite nice. That high end backpack, and those soft side bags in particular look very cool. Is there a recommended place for more information about them? |

Thank you for your support. :-) I'll post pictures about the project here and will try to keep the thread updated. Reepicheep, yes, Kriega does very nice stuff. They are going to fabricate some Bottpower co-branded backpacks that will be availabe in January. We will sell them as another way to finance the project. Their website is www.kriega.com and they also have a USA website www.kriega.us |

Well, there has been a big delay in the bikes shipment, but we finally received the 2 XBRR that we will use as donor bikes for our race bike. We will use one as a donor bike and we will take the engine and some other components from the other one to use them as spare parts. Next step will be to disassembly both bikes and check if our frame fits correctly with the XBRR engine. By the way, the XBRR bikes will be rebuilt after the race, so at the end of this adventure they will be in much better condition than they are now. :-) (Message edited by mrbott on November 18, 2016) |
