No matter how cool your job is, it isn't as cool as riding around London on a BMWF800 carrying a machine gun cool.

That can't be London. They don't have guns. Oh, wait... yes they do. Carried by the guys they call after the action is already over, ostensibly to secure the scene of the crime. Still, pretty cool... |

with all due respect, those aren't machine guns. Machine guns are fully automatic and typically primarily utilize externally fed, usually disintegrating, belted ammunition. edit: yes, my job has been that cool, on occasion. Riding a dirtbike in kit, with a slung M4, is less fun than it sounds, however. Getting paid to ride a dirtbike with a loaded M4, however, is awesome, even if it's cumbersome and clanky. Fair enough. They aren't F800's either Was it a KLR-250? I had one of those. Never had an M4 though. |

I had one of the coolest jobs ever. The problem was I thought it sucked at the time. I got to drive the ultimate off road vehicle from ship to shore and inland objectives. It was stuffed full of like minded people. It had a .50 M2 machine gun along with a 40mm grenade launcher. I had it up to damn near 60 mph once in Norway going down hill on the freeway... pretty cool if you ask me. I got to travel the world and see 29 different countries. From north of the arctic circle to the Straits of Magellan, deep into the Mediterranean Sea and all the way back around to the land of the rising sun. This picture was taken in 1990 during a West Africa Training Cruise. That's me in the turret. The Marine sitting in the drivers seat was smart. He stayed in and just retired last year with 30 years of service.

If select fire those would be real assault rifles, not the ones the media talks about. Machine gun would be the correct ATF definition as they have a more liberal interpretation. I rode around on HMMWV's for a time with MK19's or M2's. It was alright. |

The MK19 was amazing. You could run a belt of ammo thru it and the barrel never got hot. Mounted in the turret made it very accurate. When it came out, we went for training at FT AP Hill in VA. You could load a single round, fire it and cut trees down from few hundred meters away |

Really not so cool, IMO, when this is the homeland that has been created...

I would love to have me an M-4 but not if it meant I would have to ride a klr 250. Just kidding!! I don't like M-4's either. |

The M2 is fun and a phenomenal combat weapon, but I really just enjoy the MK19. There's something about not only firing large caliber rounds full auto, but watching those rounds explode upon impact (HEDP baby!). The lobbing effect and hearing those 40mm rounds exit the barrell, somewhat akin to a mortar sound (that deep whomp whomp whomp whomp sound), also adds sensory gratification. |

Most enjoyable day for me was firing over 700 40mm rounds in one day. I just realized I didn't pick up any of the boxes from that. |
