How can we grow the sport of Minimoto here in the North East? The lack of tracks is really a limit. This was the same thing that helped cancel the YSR50 racing 20 years ago.

http://www.nyminigp.com/mini-gp-racing/race-classe s/

Anyway, my brother is really thinking about this right now, and I'll have to admit that I'd love to be able to get out and run something small and "inexpensive" like a mini. I could run my Buell, but we all know that this can take serious money each season and the minmoto bikes should be less.

My brother pointed out a race ready Kayo 125 today, it's damn cheap for a race ready machine and looks pretty nice:

http://www.svracingparts.com/kayo/

Otherwise you have the Grom and the Kawasaki competitor to chose. Mayber EBR will build a killer minimoto single to compete.

As I said, tracks are the hardest thing to come up with up here, so how can this be grown?

Like anything else, it can start inexpensively but the serious guys have bikes that are money pits.

+1!

I'd love to get into something like that... a year or so ago someone posted a CL ad for a YSR50 that had a CR125 motor stuffed into it-
DANG I was tempted to grab that thing!

FIDDY RACING! YEEHAAAA!!!

I have a non-running YSR, need to cram a 125 two stroke in there and get it back on the road.

It'd be fun to study up on the right motor to stuff into a dead YSR! I grew up a Suzuki kid, but LOVE Yamaha... music and motorcycles.
Maybe an Aprilia 2-smoke motor?

I wish somebody would bring back battletrax... as a personal skills thing, not a compete against each other thing. Those were SO much fun.

Found out this is a Chinese import with a carb. Not terribly interested in tuning a carb. each day, wish it had EFI.

http://www.kayominigp.com/

The guy importing them has a lot of stuff to offer and a current $500 discount. If me and my brother were to each buy one, it would come out to $3150 each after shipping which includes a different seat, rearsets, and a few other goodies. It is said to be using a Kawasaki motor so parts are available, probably a clone motor. He is only importing the 125cc right now, it seems to compete with the Grom in stock form, but the Grom seems to have some radical go fast options.

People are putting 4 valve heads, new cams, Dynojet PCV with autotune, 5 speed gearbox, etc. into their Groms and getting up above 100 mph. Of course by the time you do all that work, you could have bought 2 used XB9R or one and a big bore kit.

Still thinking, not going to jump to quickly on the Kayo and no used Groms around for reasonable prices. A few used Groms for more than I can buy a new one from the dealer in town, not sure what that's about because the dealer has one of each color sitting on the showroom floor.

UMRA, The organization I raced with in the 24 hour last September (on a Grom) is evolving rapidly. http://www.raceumra.com/ Find a mini racing organization in your area. They're really expanding as their popularity grows.

Read your class rules before you start doing modifications. You might accidentally put yourself in a race group where the bike is outclassed.

If you can find a go-kart track, you'd be good to go. Shoot one of the mini race organizations a note. If there's a track in your area, they'd likely know. It's getting silly fun and getting sponsorships.

SOME races are run on "full size" race tracks, not just go-kart tracks.

I was surprised that the average ages of racers was about the same as our other race organizations - except they had YOUNG racers (and this one OLD racer)

Battletrax was maybe the most fun I've ever had on a motorcycle!I still practice Battletrax type maneuvers every chance I get.It makes me a much better rider.

The insurance was the biggest hurdle, when we were trying to get a battle trax like event going.

Apparently, the Kayo eats the Grom's lunch on the track. Most guys compare it to an NSR50, which is quite a complement.

The closest organization is http://www.nyminigp.com/ which is really the NJ mini GP guys.

I did some googling last night, and the number of paved road courses in NY is really low. Genesee Valley has a nice looking track, but not sure if they allow motorcycles http://gvkc.org/

Cherry Valley is a bit beat and up for sale, they never even had the YSR50 racing, they might not believe in it http://www.cherryvalleymp.com/home.html

I'm hoping a new place might put in paved tracks. I know the goal was Nascar, Indy, F1, and eventually MotoGP http://www.centralnyracewaypark.com/

Maybe it's just financing issues waiting for enough sponsors https://youtu.be/yT6NA3ktjfE

I'm really hopeful that the CNY Race Park gets going

Worked on my trailer most of the evening. Bought the cheap 1000 pound capacity 40 x 49 inch Harbor Freight trailer a while ago. Made tongue extensions so I can haul about 20 foot long kayaks. Also made a shorter extension for the motorcycle configuration. Pretty sure my brother and I will be buying Kayo miniGP bikes soon. The price is just too good compared to what you need to put into a Grom to get them ready.

Going to buy a Kayo, my brother said he will call tomorrow and order the pair.

The only track that seems to race these within 3 hours drive is this one:
http://www.ovrp.net/motorcycle-racing/index.html#. V42XkFQrLIU
They host the NYminiGP races, still need to get something closer. The Genesee Valley track still looks nicer.

I so far found 3 "close" tracks to me that might be open to MiniGP racing... But none of them have the correct insurance to cover it. The Genesee Valley kart track allows casual practice laps, but they rely on either SCCA or Kart racing event coverage during races.

Damn red tape is discouraging and I don't even have the bikes yet (shipping today or tomorrow).

So I sent an email to WERA to see if I can build a class for these to fall under their blanket policy. Not sure if that would require a racing license which certainly would put this class out of reach of many of these racers.

The reason to look for other tracks is that I think there would be interest in the central and western portion of New York that isn't really covered by the NY/NJ metro area. And there are some nice tracks that could be added if there was interest.

Anyone with any contacts and tips, please let me know what you have.

Bikes are shipped and possibly scheduled for delivery on July 29, that's fast for freight from Washington state. Coming by Roadrunner and I do have a tracking number.

Not sure if anyone is following this, but here is my effort to expand miniGP and offer some kind of racing interaction for the Kayo bikes (even if it is self serving). We'll see how long the shared server lasts before it runs out of space.

http://miniGP-racing.com

If it seems broken, it probably is. I'm messing with it and one other person is messing with it. So between both of us it could be broken at any time.

BTW, in the first picture with the three bikes, you can see a $6000 Grom way back in the background (red leathers). It has most of the go faster parts on it, just lacking cam and 4 valve head... It had its lunch eaten by a very stock Kayo MR125 with a slippery street tire on the back. The winner of this F1 class was also on a Kayo, but it has had a few internal changes. Couldn't find out about them because the guy wouldn't even give us the time of day. But the white Kayo's owner was great and we talked to him for a long time between qualifying and races.

Not much interest, but I'll update. The forum is up and people can register. I have a tech. info section where I'll be documenting some of the things that need to be done for race prep., and a places to race section to list tracks and clubs as I find them.

Huh? That's my backyard man, and I've not heard of it... post up a link or some info if you can.

I remember riding the Gap with a guy who had a YSR50... he flogged that thing, looked to be a ton of fun- until he laid in too deep, and his left peg ground into the pavement, and suddenly he's off the road! He'd forgotten to install his higher rearsets! Didn't hurt him or the bike. Lucky for sure, more still because he couldn't ride with gloves, born a Thalidomide baby, had clawlike hands.

Fun times.

Me and my friends had a lot of fun flogging my YSR50, I think the highest we ever got was the H of MPH which was around 45 or 50. The KAYO will run about 70 stock. Lap times showed an average of about 46mph at the track.

You can bet that if I find mini racing in your area, it will be listed on my site. If you find it before me, please either join the forum and let me know, or send me a PM here so I can post it.

BTW, calling these "race ready" is a definite stretch of the term. Finding lots of little things that weren't done properly at the factory like torquing down bolts. But working through the pieces as I can, so stupid hot and humid right now that I can only get a few hours of work in each night.

Getting stuff up on the website as quick as I can perform the work and write it up.

If anybody is within a days' range of the annual 24 hour race, copied/pasted from UMRA Facebook this morning. I can't make this year's 24 hour but if last years was any indication, you GOTTA give it a go!

*****

We are so excited to say this, but we are RUNNING OUT OF SPACE for this year's 24 Hour Endurance Race!!!! Positions are limited to the first 24 teams that have four or more racers registered. If your team does not have the minimum racers registered, your spot could be snatched away. Don't miss out. Captains- Get your racers signed up! It is definitely not too late to get in on the action.

When: Sept 10-11th Noon to Noon
Where: Grange Motor Circuit
