I didn't want to derail the other thread, so here we go.

Reepicheep said There is an entrenched, barely perceptible, but pervasive problem of racism. It is real, and it makes life harder for blacks.

While this is true, I must also point out that the reverse is also true. By this I mean it is making life harder for other races as well.

Example: I have been told by my employer that two of my "colleagues" (I put that in quotes because these men are not qualified for their jobs AT ALL) are going to remain employed in their positions BECAUSE they are black.

So I have to spend my days listening to everything they say on the phone to anybody in order to make sure they do not cause catastrophic errors which I will then have to compensate for. I have to watch every little thing they do, and I actually pray for them to be up walking around the office playing with their cell phones or taking personal calls. With the two of them OUT of the room, I can do my job much more easily. Of course, I have to do all this very gently, so as not to offend them.

The rationale for them being employed is that it will supposedly keep us out of so many disputes at the labor board when drivers who feel like they weren't given fair treatment take us to the cleaners and we have to pay them TWO YEARS of "perceived wages" on exit.

Yes, that's right... the most recent loss was in the amount of $144,000 paid to a guy with two preventable accidents in less than one year, followed by taking a truck that was marked out of service across state lines and failing the subsequent inspection resulting in a massive tow bill. We have him on camera removing a 8" x 10" sticker from just below the door handle... like this one:

This driver was with us for almost 3 years and barely worked 3-4 days a week, had garnishments for child support and unpaid debts, and was just sloppy all the way around. He never earned more than $35,000 in a single year. Had he worked every day, he would have been well above $50,000 but NEVER anything near $72,000 per year which is what his settlement was based on.

These "hearings" are conducted by phone, and not by a judge or anybody with any kind of legal background. Government drones, all of them.

Back to my coworkers: I am constantly held responsible for their actions. They are a constant cause of my stress. Meanwhile in another department there's a couple of guys I wish I could trade up for, one black and one Colombian. It doesn't really matter to me as long as the individual can do the job.

I've been hearing a lot about this type of situation from people in other businesses, many of them my customers. An air of entitlement about them, these people are insinuating themselves into companies and creating a negative drag on productivity. I can tell you it is very disheartening from the perspective of an employer looking to hire on new people... trying to discern what lurks beneath the veneer of a resume they paid someone else to write.

/rant over (for now)

I've seen the same thing. Sometimes for race, sometimes for gender, sometimes for personality, sometimes for friendship or family ties to the right people.

I've seen racism, especially when I was younger in a smaller Ohio town. I have known people that "won't hire a black or a Mexican because they are lazy". I think these people are idiots, and I won't tolerate it in any situation where I have any degree of authority. I've seen more instances of what you describe, where a protected class is over protected. Ironically, now that you mention it, I will actually tolerate more of this flavor of stupid. Mainly because of the paperwork and hassle factor involved in "fixing it".

But to be honest, I haven't seen a lot of either. Both happen, both are fairly rare, at least in the circles I am in.

I agree it's wrong, and generally multiple symptoms of the same root problems.

Literally 1 hour after I wrote that, I got a call from the office.

They are moving both of them out of my department... not far enough away for my tastes, but it will have to do for now. They become somebody else's problem, but it still harms the overall health of the company.

Disgusting.

Many moons ago they brought in a new machinist to be my partner. It was a black woman. She was not a thin woman and her fingernails were an inch long and painted. I though oh crap, I'm going to have to carry her. Since my father was a maintenance supervisor and over all my bosses, none of the bosses wanted me to work for them so they stuck me by myself on a draft beer unit away from everybody. Then they put her out there to bury her too!
Well it so happens that this woman was really good at her job and how she kept from breaking a nail I have no idea! We became good friends and still are today. I've always known not to judge a book by it's cover and she was the perfect example!

Ever since then I judge folks by their character and believe me, there's some characters on this forum!!

I guess that does sound pretty good! Problem was the beer was in the piping and in the kegs! If we wanted one to drink we had to go to the break room! Plenty in the cooler back then! Till 1986 anyway!

I work in a very mixed racial environment.

Whites, blacks, Koreans, Chinese, Filipino, Arab, even real Caucasians. Not one bit of that matters if you do your job, and aren't a jerk. We even tolerate a lot of jerk. You do get liked more if you are helpful and willing to chip in.

But color? We are all Blue. We work in a dangerous, often hostile environment. Not all work in the ghetto, but I've put years in neighborhoods where they average a couple of folk shot a week. I was working the 'hoods when the Jamaican drug gangs displaced the Puerto Rican gangs, and then we averaged about 5 a week. Half in broad daylight.

I've had crack heads point guns at me, sic dogs on me, had coke dealers flip out when I walked by a buy, and laughed my butt off when the Suburban Lawyer Types cruised the 'hood looking for pot. I've got stories.

And the one race thing I am certain of, dirtbags come in all colors. All ethnicities.

That said, there certainly is racism built into the system. Some of it is a hangover from a century ago, but most is institutional political racism, and the natural reaction to reality when one group is put down and makes up a statistically significant fraction of crime.

Even Jesse Jackson admits he would cross the street to avoid a group of young black men. He's ashamed of that, and thinks it racist of him.

Wimp. Those are my customers I say hi to every day.

I love people of all stripes. I hate losers and societal leeches.

Driving the school bus, I got to see how the kids act. Kids tend to be quite unfiltered BTW. They also have to learn racism. If a second grader is obviously racist, he almost certainly learned it at home. I picked up kids from a variety of neighborhoods, and I noticed two that really bread racism. One area was a mix of races. One was mostly black. Both were section 8 housing areas though. I hate to say it, but most of the racism you see in young kids, comes from black kids. I really doubt that goes away as they grow up. I've talked with other bus drivers who have picked up on the same thing.

I have to believe that it does come from generations of people who have been paid by the government to be poor. They will never learn to improve their situation when they can do somewhat better than an entry level job on government programs. The politicians couldn't give a shit as long as they can count on 90+% of their votes. These people will never hear anything except Republicans want to take away their free stuff. I guess in a way that's true. In the long run, it would be the best thing that could ever happen to them.

I was never thought racism in any form, we where always thought to judge a person by their character, not by their color, race or religion. I can remember when schools where desegregated, my older brother was in Junior High when they started busing and initially their were some incidents, he came home one day after a fight and used the "N" word in front of my grandfather, that was the first time I ever saw him knock the hell out of anyone. He told us both he remembered how he was treated when he came to this country from Sicily and that he will not stand for that kind of behavior in the house. He was a good man and thought me many lessons. Number one was to respect all of Gods children.

It is true that blacks are still under a form of slavery, democratic party has seen to that. If you take away ones ability to provide for themselves you strip them of their dignity, this is cruel. Problem is they don't even realize it is happening, and they keep voting for the same.

People on all sides need to get over the perceived entitlement. Nobody owes you squat in this world. The ever growing special interest groups infecting people with the victim mentality is quite pervasive these days.

In outright defiance of the Republican-led federal government, Southern Democrats formed organizations that violently intimidated blacks and Republicans who tried to win political power. The most prominent of these, the Ku Klux Klan, was formed in Pulaski, Tennessee, in 1865.

Seem...familiar?

Oh, the irony of "Black Lives Matter." They're like an inverse KKK against white Republicans/Conservatives.

The weirdest thing is that Democrats on social media are blaming the KKK on Republicans.

These people are so clueless sometimes it's laughable. They think any talking point can be invalidated by calling someone a racist. No...that's historically you guys...

Now with this "reverse" black on white racism and "white guilt" tactics. I find it quite bizarre, but mostly because it seems to be pretty effective.

White former school mates are emotionally decrying other whites the problem on social media. That's not how it works, guys. If you aren't a racist and aren't spreading hate and malcontent you don't have a dog in this fight.

I keep waiting for a politician to denounce all the race category's and just explain that there are good people and bad people. I like good people and wish the bad people would get a clue! We are all Americans and all individuals and should be judged individually! The government just loves to make us into groups.

I'd prefer totalitarian evil to "idealistic".

Although if your ideals are to rule those you consider too stupid to make decisions for themselves, and you earnestly believe yourself superior to the proles... then, yeah. Evil idealism, but I'm a Citizen of a Republic.

Also I can't help but notice this game has been played before, and "the people" are always the ones screwed.

Expect the pressure to take away Constitutional rights to ratchet up as the Conventions start, and the leftist/Occupy/Alinskyite leaders make "shocked" comments on the upcoming street violence.

People who seek power by hate are evil. It should be the definition.

People are being exploited to create civil unrest with the goal of furthering an idealistic agenda.

Ya know, I think this sums it up quite well.

I live in a city that is one of the most segregated in the country. Sure, I know people that many would call racists, but honestly, they are sick of hearing about murders in the low income areas of the city that set records year on year. Does that make them racist to not want murder in their community?
I consider myself to be one of the least influenced by race that I know...mostly because that is how I was raised, and I am damn thankful for that. It was hammered into me not to judge someone by their color, but by their character. And I have held onto that throughout my (fairly) young life.
I work and interact with people of all types on a daily basis. If I think you're an , it has nothing to do with the color of your skin. That couldn't be further from my mind when I form an opinion.
However, when I see people protesting in the streets that all white people are racist, all cops are terrible, all of America is out to get us, my blood starts to boil. Not because I see these people as racists, but because I see them as people whose mind has been so negatively influenced (by their surroundings, by their upbringing, by their living conditions, by their politicians) to believe that others are out to get them, that they are a victim, and this prevents them from seeing past their own shadow. They are literally bred into a life of dependence on the government or others.

Someone reminded me recently that if you want to see change in your community or in the world, you must first look in the mirror and see that change that you want in yourself.
Some introspection would do wonders for the current society we have, but sadly, everyone is too worried about selfies, Facebook, Twitter, and the like to slow down, take a deep breath, and react with thought rather than emotion...because that is how the media is currently treating any "newsworthy" situation.

And that is truly sad. }

I am absolutely a friend of police but the militarization of the police has served to escalate all kinds of citizen unrest, not just racism but all kinds. "To protect and serve" does not require apc's and next level weapons.
That is, unless you are trying to engineer a dictator controlled state.
