I don't watch news on TV. Haven't for over a decade now. It's too tabloid like. Has been for some time.

I'll watch local live coverage on the net, or catch stories through trusted sources online. Way too much propaganda and sensationalism going on.

Maybe you guys can help me out . . .

Why . . . in the good name of common sense . . . do folks . . . when shooting breaks out . . . stand in the middle of the freaking street . . .holding an iPhone with their thumb on the screen shooting video??

In my experience . . . after having been shot several times and a stint as a Marksman in the USMC and with The White House Advance Team . . . I'm a huge fan of cover and concealment.

I've narrowed the possible reasons to:

1) Total idiot
2) Death wish

Perhaps you can help. Me . . now fat, stupid, old and in my sunset years . . have no clue.

3) Trained by TV shows where the hero reporter never gets hurt.

Which really is just a modification of case 1.

Because they've never been taught.

Prior to getting into my first firefight, I always wondered what I would do if I ever got shot at.

Training works.

The first time I ever got shot at, I found cover and returned fire. I didn't even have to think about it.

I occasionally ask my autistic son what he's supposed to do if he ever hears gunshots. He says, "find something to hide behind, right?". Good boy.

Oh, the answer is clearly #1 - Total idiot.

...because we now live in a day and age where being the first person to post the steaming pile of cow manure on instagram or farcebook makes you a "hero".

>>>The first time I ever got shot at, I found cover and returned fire. I didn't even have to think about it.

You and I must have gone to the same high school. Your world looks different when you hear the click of a hammer with a Chief's Special shoved in your mouth.

I have, based on my experience, a couple mantras. . . .

1) Hide with haste - When you aren't in control of timing or you lack the element of surprise you may eventually want to be brave . . but start by being the world's biggest chicken.

2) If you are carrying a concealed weapon and have to draw it . . . you should be on about the 3rd shot by the time anyone knows you even had it. A concealed weapon can be a great defense tool . . . it's the world' worst negotiating tool.

and . . . . I'd have to add . . . based on observed behavior from 2 friends who are Horse Soldiers (you may have to google that the CIA still denies the existence of The Farm) . . . . BE POLITE.

It's been a wild ride.
