Interesting Froggy,
But he's not the type of person that would attempt such a repair.

And it's likely toyota will never admit a problem like that exists, unless there is a fire with massive property damage, personal injury or fatality.

Buyers who EXPECT advertised range over the life of the bike/battery might be disappointed.

http://www.zeromotorcycles.com/warranty/
What is not Covered by This Limited Warranty?
Due to the battery chemistry, there is a normal, expected reduction in range/capacity that Power Packs can yield over time and usage.
Depending on use and storage conditions, Power Packs will degrade during the duration of this Limited Warranty period. Zero will only repair or replace pursuant to this Limited Warranty a Power Pack that exhibits a nominal storage capacity reduction of greater than 20% of the published nominal capacity, as measured by an authorized Zero dealer. To check the capacity of a Power Pack, an authorized Zero dealer can perform a battery management system log data extraction, which will confirm if a reduction is within expected norms.

I want a zero FX. Realize it doesn't have the range of the other bikes, but I like the styling and it would be great for commuting and then playing on the weekends, especially with a full weight less than 300lbs, you could actually off road it.

Unlike the other models, the FX has a replaceable battery. You can buy an extra battery pack and leave it on the charger. When the main one is depleted, swap batteries and keep on playing. That makes up for having less range, I think. You can also keep one battery on the charger in the office, and when you get there, swap them out for the ride home (once home you can charge the one in the bike overnight). Lots of possibilities there.

Latest update: Just parked it in the garage with the battery readout showing "00%" after doing 92 miles of MOSTLY highway. Oddly enough, when the charge went to 00%, the "Range" read out was still showing "4 miles." I made it home in two.

So now I know...

...assuming it's repeatable. I wouldn't trust it. You don't have the option of hoofing it to the nearest gas station. Good range though. An electric bike makes all kinds of sense for me. I live really close to work. Close enough that my bikes don't get up to temp before I get there, even in the summer. Not good for them. An ebike wouldn't care.

I kept my "return leg" on the service road knowing I'd be really pressing my luck. Kept the speed at 55 mph and lower and took advantage of the regenerative braking whenever I could (rolled up to every red light rather than riding up and braking at the end). That helped eek out a few extra miles I'm sure.

On the other hand, how hard is it to find an available AC outlet? : )

I wonder if Starbucks has outlets for the outside tables.

Not hard. But you've got to push the bike to the outlet. And you have to convince the owner of said outlet to give you the electricity, with no way to meter it. It's not free. Probably can get it gratis, but as more and more people drive/ride electric vehicles, and come sucking around begging for power, the "sure, plug 'er in" attitude will wane. Best to never run out.

Think I posted this on the other page but here it is for those that haven't seen it:

https://na.chargepoint.com/charge_point
http://www.plugshare.com/

Plugshare even lists residential chargers that are available (I don't know if there is a cost involved or not).

Residential electric rates here are in the 12 cent range so if someone needed a charge, I would gladly hand them an extension cord.

I see new charge stations all the time in my area. Work recently sent out a survey to see if more people were interested in EV purchases and charge station expansion at our building. I believe there is only 1 charger currently.

Jamiec also stated in his first post that he didn't opt for the larger battery or quick charger, both of which have a hefty price. The Level 2 quick charger can get you 80% charge in 30 minutes or something along those lines.

Wondering how many feet of climbing was part of this trip?
Have you tracked total feet of climbing?

"so if someone needed a charge, I would gladly hand them an extension cord."

Very kind of you. What if they came by several times per week? Wouldn't you get a bit fed up with their poor planning and assumption that they can always mooch some power along the way?

Granted...it's a hypothetical. But I see it happening when electric only cars become ubiquitous.

I think that is quite extreme isn't it?

I'd offer to review their route and help them come up with a better plan. Maybe the 2 sites I posted above are all they need.

I have a big yard so there is plenty of work needing to be done around here while the bike is charging.

http://faq.plugshare.com/article/9-do-i-have-to-sh are-how-expensive-is-sharing

https://forums.tesla.com/forum/forums/residential- plugshare-etiquette

As more modes of transportation become electric only, the number of places and ways to recharge will increase, so I doubt this will become that big of an issue.

Really excited to ride some more Zero models and maybe the Victory Impulse again in October at AIMExpo.

I don't know how extreme it is. It depends on whether it ever happens. Right now, it's not a common occurrence, so no one is fed up yet. If four people a week knocked on your door and asked if they could have a gallon of gasoline, how many gallons would you dispense before you started telling them to pack sand?

Good to see that people have thought about that possible future and are doing something to forestall it.

According to the estimates based on my price per kWh, a full charge (8.9 hours) on a completely dead battery would cost approximately $1.84.

I would mention that the before/after electric bill since I had the solar panels installed haven't changed since I got the Zero. I am still providing more energy to the grid than I am actually consuming. Essentially, I'm riding the Zero for free...

Nice. I've thought about getting panels installed, but the up front cost is prohibitive. It's not just the panels, it's the control modules, wiring, structure, etc. Plus, I have a nat gas generator, and whole house transfer switch. Not sure how you marry that to a full time additional power source that can backfeed the grid.

I didn't actually purchase them, I leased them. I have the specs at home, they're SunPower panels and I pay $99 a month. Thanks to NYS, the $5,000 deposit I put on the equipment was refunded in whole when I did my returns this year. That money became the deposit on the Zero (which now gets me a $1,600 rebate from the federal government next year). That $99 a month is fixed for the 20 year term of the lease. The only other charge is the basic "maintenance fee" from the local utility company, but I am running a credit with them now since I am producing more power than I'm using.

I have to admit, it's pretty cool looking at the meter running BACKWARDS during the daylight hours.

Our local paper (Newsday) earlier this year reported that PSEG (the utility company) has postponed plans to build new power plants as more residential customers than anticipated had solar panels installed and they are producing enough power to offset the need for new power plants. I think that's pretty damned cool.

We are preparing . . . in New York State . . to start the largest program of transmission lines in history.

As the Chairman, Brad Jones, of the New York Independent System Operator said in a meeting last week . . . there are 3 key elements to renewable energy . . . transmission, transmission, transmission.

I've spent 48 years building transmission lines . . I wish I was 20 years younger . . . I've never seen so much work.

One of our long time Badweb brothers lives off of solar on his ship at sea where he powers 3 freezers and produces enough to run the entire ship and a/c through the night. He's an amazing engineer and I've lusted over the schematic of his system.

Cool stuff.

Have you ever been to Long Island, NY? Our highest point is 400 feet above sea level. We're pretty damned FLAT here. There were elevation changes on my route, but if I climbed more than fifteen feet I'd be surprised.

Jaimec, thanks for the reply.I was interested in solar for the house I'm buying in Dahlonega until I found out the average cost of a system in my area.I'll look into whether or not the local power company (small EMC) has any kind of solar program. They and the state of GA aren't listed on the national database as having any kind of rebate for solar.
