Hey good BW folks, lemme throw something out and see if anyone has some ideas...

My sweetie just recently applied for her early SS benefits, as she's eligible starting the end of June, turning 62. When she went for her appointment to set everything up, she found out that she was eligible for a widow's SS benefit from her first husband, who passed many years ago in a car accident. The thing is, she was eligible to begin receiving that at age 60, but didn't know and wasn't notified by the Social Security office. Our question is basically WTF, over?

Does anyone here know much about SS and how to wrangle with them? We feel that if she was entitled to that widow's benefit all this time, they should retroactively allow her that money. We'll probably have to consult a legal eagle, but I'm starting here on the BW... all you good peeps have been reliably good at contributing your $.02 on various subjects from time to time.

Thanks in advance, discuss!

So she's already requested the money and been denied?

Brad, if you start taking the SS payments at a later date, you will be pro-rated to give you a larger monthly payment. They won't give you a lump sump back payment if that's what you are thinking. It will all come out about the same when she hits the age they have for her in their mortality tables. If she lives past that point, she will come out ahead because she is getting slightly larger monthly payments. If the were to pass earlier than that, then she will not have caught up because of SS ending before her mortality age. Hope that makes sense.

My sister is a retired CPA and dealt with SS type stuff. She suggested you start with a phone call to SS and ask. Or make an appointment and go down there. She wasn't sure about retro payments but it doesn't hurt to ask. Good luck.
