I am sans 2 wheeled transpo these days.
Dude, I'm sans wheels! Besides, TWOS (Two Wheels of Suches) lets car in now, they have a parking lot on the other side of the creek now.
A lot has changed there, a lot of people like it better.
GT passed away, a couple years ago. I still miss him.

Tootal, yep that right beside 60 on the way to Morgantown. That day just might have been my last ride with Charlie.

That is awesome that it reopened! It was a very cool place. I'm sorry to hear about GT... Wasn't he the owner of TWO back then?
I still remember MBIV and MBV like it was just last year.
I still rock my MBV shirt.. The one with the silhouette picture of Charlie on the back.

I see an XB around here every once in a while.

That's two of about 10 shots taken there. I'm so glad I don't have to buy film anymore!! Something about water that you just can't quite capture but you keep trying. I guess that's the definition of insanity!

If that was you're last ride then you made it a great one.

Hey Dave! Family is doing great!
Shelby is growing up WAY too fast. She is in the 3rd grade now, and we expect she will be graduating high school sometime next week...

I would love to have another XB, but I recall the reasoning behind selling the last, and that still remains the case... Every time I got out and hit the twisties, I kept contemplating what would happen to the family if I had a mishap. That took a lot of the fun out of it. So, I have a slower version of motorized fun. I have a jeep, and crawl slowly through the woods now.

Glitch,

I'm afraid my father may be going down the same path you have traveled. Some of the things Ann posted that you went through seem to be happening to him. Kind of scared and not having luck convincing him that he needs to go to the emergency room.

He had/has a big "thing" in his lung, they did a needle biopsy and found it was an infection. A bunch of days of antibiotics to stop the coughing seemed to help, but his mind started slipping. Now about a week off the antibiotics and his coordination is shot, he can't do things like navigate a web page, pay bills, etc. Said today that he sometimes feels a kind of pressure on one side of his head.

Just got a message that my mom is taking him to emergency tonight.

Man! Please tell me he's gonna be all right!
Infections can be plain ol evil.
The antibiotic they finally settled on was a cocktail made by the CDC.
Nothing the docs had in their bag would even touch it.

The ER was empty so they got my dad right in. Doing blood work and have mostly ruled out a stroke. Hoping they admit him and start an IV of antibiotics. Hope they can do a head CT scan soon. He had one about a month ago from the VA hospital so they can compare that one with a fresh scan.

Did a bunch of other blood pressure and ECG tests too.

Sorry, kind of taking your thread way off topic. But it's nice to have someone that can understand. Wish I could make it out to meet you, can't get off work and even if I could have, I probably wouldn't be able to go now.

I hate to hear what he's going through, but he's in the right place.

As far as coming down to meet me, take care of everything there as best you can, and we'll plan on next year. If things go right, we'll be moved into the cabin...the last time didn't go so well... ; )

Just a quick update... They did a scan of his head and found several spots that weren't there a month ago. Thankfully they already did a study on the infection in his lung and had a chart of antibiotics that would work. So they cross checked that for types that would cross the brain barrier and started him on an IV of the stuff. Thankful that the ER was slow, they spent hours with him last night so hoping those hours will lead to a speedy recovery. Neurologist is supposed to see him on rounds today and probably new scans every day to check progress. Going to be several days in the hospital.

I have to say that if Glitch didn't go through this and He and Ann didn't walk us through everything, I wouldn't have guessed what what was happening to my dad. So I'm grateful that you helped us!

Think I need to build a sidecar rig and make a journey, think I owe someone a ride!

Unfortunately, things seem to be progressing exactly the same way they did for Glitch. They are overly worried about the infection (or whatever it is) going to his heart, to the point of almost ignoring the problem in his brain. They now have two kinds of antibiotic dripping through an IV. On this list tomorrow is Neuro-surgeon, MRI, more heart tests, and meeting with someone from infectious diseases. Meanwhile, he can no longer stand, pretty much complete loss of motor function on his right side (infection is all over his left brain). Motor function on left side is just about good enough to feed himself, but his thoughts are so muddled that he can't accomplish the task. Ugg! Wish the doctors had taking this more seriously last week when he was telling them about the problems concentrating and difficulty with doing common tasks (like walking, and drinking from a cup). I heard him tell them at least three times last week about these issues... At least the guys in the ER took it very seriously, just hope we aren't too late. I guess I shouldn't complain too much, they are really trying their best, but there are probably things they can't or shouldn't do now that the specialists will do tomorrow.

Hi Greg_e -

Glitch asked me to post to you since, well, he doesn't remember much after we got to the ER in his situation.

You'll certainly know more tomorrow once the specialists get together and review his situation. There may be a speech therapist and physical therapist come to assess him as well. They might see him before the other specialists so they can relay the information to be included in the review.

When Glitch was first admitted, one of the MANY things I was told was that "the next 24-48 hours are going to be the most critical". They needed to give the IV antibiotics time to get in his system and see where to go from there.

I wish I could tell you what to expect "play by play". All I do know is that in Glitch's case, decisions weren't made by just one doctor. There was a whole team that would meet and decide what the next move was, based on everyone's evaluation - neurosurgeon, neurologist, ENT, infectious disease doctor, pulmonologist, and the therapists.

You and your family are in our prayers. Please keep us posted! Glitch said "you hang in there and we'll be hanging in there with you."

So here is an update on my dad... in the past week he has been on a mess of antibiotics, had an MRI, had a hole drilled in his skull for a biopsy, removed some of the antibiotics now that they knew what was happening, added a steriod to help with the swelling... He is able to walk again and they are trying to get him into a longer term care situation because he needs antibiotics for at least 7 more weeks. These are IV drips/pumps so they require some sort of supervision. Now here is the twist, they were all ready to move him to the hospitals care facility when the price came up, our portion is $800 a week for just the antibiotics, plus equipment. Well the VA decided to call and check up on him, they offered the equipment, drugs, etc., FOR FREE as part of his normal veterans coverage and either they could teach us to handle it, or they would bring in a home nurse company to handle the meds twice a day. We worked with a few good one and one really great guy when my mom was dealing with her cancer.

So anyway, now the hospital is getting all pissy because we found a way to get this covered without costing us an arm and a leg. The people at the VA satellite office that my dad goes to are really sharp, and they've put in a good fight and will probably really take the hospital to task if there is more resistance. The biggest reason we were at the regular hospital is because we thought this might be cancer (mass on his lung) and their oncology department is very good. That and the VA doctor said it would be weeks before they could get my dad into the nearest VA hospital, we didn't want to wait weeks and it may have been a good thing.

I hate to play the veteran card, but if this gets messy I'll have to take this whole thing to the press. I worked for a news station, I know people at all of our local stations, and should still know a few people at the local big paper (several took our courses at the college where I work now). The news director at the number 1 TV station taught classes for us, I think he might find this story interesting.

Hoping this mess is all worked out tomorrow when my mom gets there, VA said it would take about 2 days to get all the meds lined up and all the equipment, so the hospital can get 2 more days of pay.

And despite all the bad press, the VA here seems to take really good care of my dad, so not at all complaining about them. This could actually be a very positive story for them, so it might get high level attention.

I believe the problems we hear about at the VA are largely regional... I've known vets that got the best of care, and others that were literally left to die.

It's all about the people who staff the individual facilities. If you get a good crew, the service will be good... likewise, a crew will do you dirty.

BOGT (Back On Greg's Topic), I'm glad to hear things are turning around, and F* that hospital for their greed.

If you have to do it, take it to the press and make it as ugly as possible.

More arguing today with the hospital person telling my mom that the VA doesn't do what we need, and the VA person saying "yes we do". I think the person at the local VA office got very short with the person at the hospital. So tomorrow she will get training on how to give his meds. (twice), and another from the home care service on Friday morning. And he will be home after his night meds. tomorrow (Thursday). One of the antibiotics will move to oral, so it will only be one thing that needs an IV and it apparently comes in this balloon type thing so you don't need to hang it, and no pump is required??? I won't know more until Friday. Hope we get the same guy as my mom had, he was a great nurse and we all enjoyed the care and dedication that he offered. The home care service will still come in every few days to draw blood and stuff like that, and I'm sure there will still be trips for new MRI and/or other scans every now and then.

My dad is home, a bunch of pills came in the mail today, and a courier dropped off the other antibiotic. Pill three times a day, and the IV antibiotic twice a day. A home health care person is supposed to come by tomorrow morning to instruct and supervise the morning IV dose. No bags, just a syringe of stuff to slowly squirt into his PIC line, then some saline to wash it out and keep it from plugging.

Praying.

There are incredible people that walk among us on a daily basis. You can not see the payment they receive. It is internal. They are the ones that keep this world from eroding into chaos. A lot of times those that step up to the plate are Vets. Never think it bad to use the Vet. card for a Vet. in need. It's not selfish to wake people up for other peoples needs. Especially for the needs of people that sacrificed their wants for others. Help him maintain a positive attitude. It makes all the difference.

Glitch,
I hope to make the trip down there next year!
