Four Years Ago

Four fears ago today (March 6, 2012), a team of Cardiac Surgeons split my chest open and cut up my heart. They then installed a 21 mm carbon and stainless artificial valve and closed me up. Now, I have a zipper shaped scar down the middle of my chest, but my heart's in the best shape it's been in for all my adult life.

Megan and Rocco drove me to the hospital that morning. I was brought into the Prepping area (I forget what the official name is), where I got undressed and into the Johnnie. The staff let the kids come in to talk with me until it was time for me to go. I was wheeled into the O.R., transferred to the table, and that's pretty much all I remember until I woke up after the surgery that afternoon.

I honestly didn't expect to ever wake up again when they gave me whatever anesthetic it was. I had tried to tie all the loose ends of my life before I went in to the hospital. I wasn't completely successful, but I cleared up a good bit of it.

This morning, I just wanted to stop and remember.

Megan took the attached photo of me while I was in the ICU after they removed the breathing tube and some other plumbing.

I, for one, am thankful you made it and I count myself as fortunate to have made your acquaintance.

See you in a couple weeks!

Another long time Badwebber got "cracked" last week and got a quadruple bypass. The stuff they can do these days is amazing and I'm thankful to have my fiends here and eating BBQ.

...hey Crusty...i was just somewhat like that about several weeks ago(not the heart thing, but really close).Been having "gut issues/pain" for a bit along with Adeama(sp)...swelling of the legs...weekend of February 13th...went to get up an go to bathroom....made two steps....hit the floor like a sack of concrete, went into shock, shallow breathing, leg convultions, shallow breathing, swollowen stomach/abdominal area. Wife called 911....into the hospital(EMT's said i passed out several times.Got operated on for 8 hrs.Woke up in ICU with tubes all over and in me(certain places not liking...main arteries..and in my Mr.Johnson...hurt the worst when they removed it).Anyway, what the ER doc said had happened was my artery next to my abdominal cavity had developed a small weak spot and was leaking into there...giving the gut pains/stomach pain effect....well finally that spot ruptured and overworking the heart during that time and up to the "event" on the 13th my lil ticker had a moment of malfunctioning......he had to remove 4 pints of blood from the cavity(put back in 6 pints of new stuff.....almost like an oil change there),repair the artery ,remove a section from my either prostrate or colon...and now i have "artwork' going vertical from several inches above Mr.Wiggie to a bit above my belly button...not my way of wanting "artwork" on my body.In the ensuing recovery and the post op scans, he also found another "item of interest" that i will have to go back in for "dealing" with...a large spleenic artery aneurysm....yeah yippee.Meaning that it could rupture and i could bleed to death...round two i guess.Bad enough i just went through all that and though i was"out of the woods" and all good to go with that. You ,though, had a much bigger "bullet dodging" event and i, for one, and glad to hear that you are doing much better.May you continue to be on that path for many many more years, fellow Bueller. The ER doctor also said had i gotten there any later, well let's just say i would of been a sack of fertilizer for a garden. All the best to you and yours.
From one "bullet dodger" to another.
