Darn, you're nowhere close to Seattle. Was going to ask if I can borrow it. Or testride it.

I saw a zero first hand (dead of winter and no gear, so didn't get to ride it).

I will say that up close and personal, it looks much less like a toy, and much more like a serious motorcycle. It has a real presence. I wish I could afford one.

Cityxslicker, so far I'm LOVING it, but it isn't without issue. Biggest one is there is no service manual available. Only the owner's manual which is provided on a USB stick (it can also be downloaded from their website). I copied it to my phone so I can at least refer to it when I'm on the road but I miss having a real paper manual.

Sadly, the owner's manual does NOT contain a basic wiring diagram or any torque specs for the fasteners. There are more than a few people on the Electric Motorcycle Forum bemoaning this oversight.

As for why this came up, the day after I took it home, the turn signals stopped working. Some quick "debugging" determined the issue must be in the flasher relay, as the same fuse that protects the flashers also protects the horn and brakelight, and those both still work. I'll get it fixed under warranty when I bring it in for its 600 mile checkup but it would be nice if I knew WHERE the relays were so I could at least see if it is seated properly. The owner's manual at least indicates where the fusebox is hidden (under the seat).

Real world range at a steady 70 mph (when I can avoid going OVER that speed) seems to be between 65-80 miles, depending on the wind. It seems to average in the low 70s with my big torso onboard. I'm thinking they got Dani Pedrosa as a test rider to get 81 miles out of a charge at that speed. I ordered the Commuter windscreen which I'm told will somewhat improve the highway range by making it a little more aerodynamic.

Other than that, the best way I can describe what it's like to ride this beast is to say it is EXACTLY like my 2000 M2 Cyclone minus the noise and vibration. Same comfortable, slightly aggressive seating position, same nimble handling. Feels like the same "rush" when you twist the throttle in anger, too. The SR is even closer to the Cyclone in that regard, but I didn't want to spend the extra $$$.

It is perfect for the task for which I bought it though. Gets me back and forth to work with enough in reserve for a lunch time ride and enough range to comfortably get me home. Once there, I plug it in in the garage where it sits overnight and its ready to go in the morning. Also good for short hops to run errands and such when either of my ICE bikes wouldn't even get up to proper operating temperature.

I should be getting the windshield at the end of the week, but the top box is still on backorder so I have to "backpack" it for now.

Thanks Jaimec ! That charging and range are keeping me on ICE bikes

Well, I didn't replace my ICE bikes with this. I bought this for commuting back and forth to work, which is (sadly) the lion's share of my riding these days. Still, this saves a TON of wear and tear on my ICE bikes. It's also still good for 100 miles of backroads on a Saturday or Sunday too if I felt like it. I'll just never ride it to Daytona Beach or San Francisco though. That's why I have the K1200LT (and, surprisingly, the C650GT makes a decent long-distance tourer despite BMW calling it an "Urban Mobility Vehicle").

Thanks Jamie. I think that Zero (I might go for the DS one) and a Uly in the garage beside each other would be the perfect combo.

Well, I had a new experience with the Zero today: Lane splitting (DISCLOSURE: I don't live in California and it is definitely NOT legal here)!

There was a truck fire on the highway one exit before mine. They shut down the entire Long Island Expressway one exit before and directed all four lanes of traffic off the one exit ramp to the service road. You can imagine how much FUN that was.

The Zero is far narrower than either my K1200LT or my C650GT. It is also only 3/4 the length of either bike. Perfect for squeezing through every possible opening in completely stalled traffic. Side benefit: Since it is completely silent, no one was even aware I was there until I was past them so no one tried to squeeze the lane shut in front of me or any of that other obnoxious behavior car drivers do when bikes try to get past.

I was able to work my way through all the cars and trucks and duck off the exit lane far quicker than all those poor slobs stuck in their cars, trucks and SUVs. Once off the exit I also got off the service road and took surface streets to the office and I was only a LITTLE late getting to my desk this morning.

Since "filtering" has been made somewhat officially legal in CA. (never WAS illegal.)
I"ve noticed more cars actually moving over to provide more space for me to pass.

So, what sort of range are you getting with the Zero?

I don't know when it started for me... but it was long, long ago..

My cousin on the left, me on the right

Here in NY where it is most definitely NOT legal, some cars will politely move out of the way. Others will move to try to block you. I use the guidelines the CHP had originally set down for "smart lane sharing." If traffic is moving 20 mph or faster, I stay in the lane. If it is "stop and go" and crawling I'll slip between the cars when they stop, and pull back into the lane when they go. If it is at a complete standstill I will slowly ride between them.

I've seen clowns here splitting lanes when the traffic is moving at 60 mph or more (the speed limit in NYS is still only 55) and riding between the cars at 30mph or faster when they're standing still. Sheer lunacy! Those are the asshats who ruin it for the rest of us.

Well I fell off the cycle as they say. I guess I have to turn in my 6 month chip. I'm back at 3 days since my last motorcycle purchase. I keep reminding myself it's a disease. Guess I'm back to taking it one day at a time. Thankfully Roy (Dutch X1) a fellow addict has agreed to ease my burden and take a couple. All I can do now is pray for the strength to resist the evil that is Craigslist.
