You Wouldn’t Want … …My life to get boring, now; would you? Yesterday, my left thumb started aching. While I didn’t twist or jam my thumb or wrist, there was a bit of pain between in that general area. Last night, it got worse. I didn’t sleep very well and I couldn’t find a comfortable position for my arm or hand.By mid morning, my wrist and hand were hurting worse than a freakin’ toothache. I can’t open my hand fully and i can’t make a fist. The hand and wrist are swollen.I called my Doctor, and the nurse who i spoke to advised me to go to an Urgent Care facility. Ernie gave me a ride, and they took X-rays, my blood pressure, temp, etc., they took a couple of vials of blood to have it checked out and decided that it’s an infection, so they gave me a bag of IV antibiotics. They left the plumbing in my right arm, as I have to go back tomorrow morning and get more, and probably more after that. I hope it works quickly. My hand and wrist are killing me; I can’t find a position for my arm that’s comfortable. It figures that it would happen just when I get back and want things to slow down and stabilize. I’m looking at this as just more proof that God really does have a sense of humor. It could have been worse. At least here I have Medicare. If it had happened in Australia, I would have had to foot the entire bill on my own. Oh, well; I sure hope this infection heals quickly. I can’t even think about riding right now. there’s no way I could work the clutch. Maybe that’s a good thing in disguise. The weather is supposedly going to get bitterly cold for this weekend. I’d probably do something stupid like try to ride somewhere when the temps are in the single digits. Well; I hope I get over this infection really quickly. |

That story sounds familiar yet yours is much less scary. My friend was at his home on some island, I don't remember at the moment. He came home to the states and a day later his wife came home and found him on the floor. He was paralyzed from the waist down. By the time they got him to a hospital he was paralyzed from his lower lip down. This happened in August last year. It seems a growth on his spine broke open when a horse he was holding jerked him around. The poison slowly took over. He is now trying to get feeling back in his feet and still can't walk. He's also fighting a giant bed sore on his back from neglect from an out patient care facility he had to go to since his insurance would not let him stay in the hospital. When I see things like that it makes me feel blessed that I have it so good. Hope you heal quickly and am thankful you made it home too! |

A blessing in disguise, Crusty. It's supposed to be -8F here Saturday night, probably colder a little further north where you are. Hope you heal fast though, by mid week it will be up in the 40's or higher. |

Damn. I just posted on your other thread about the temperature. I didn't think your hand was going to become your enemy. Get well soon! |

Just a quick follow up. The antibiotics are working. The pain has lessened significantly. That’s an understatement. Yesterday, my arm hurt worse than an abscessed tooth. Today, it’s only a mild ache; unless I try to use my hand too much. I didn’t think it would recover this quickly, but I sure am glad it did! I have to go back for another round of IV antibiotics this morning. Hopefully, the healing will continue at the same pace. The weather is going to keep me off the bike for a few days; it’s going well below zero this weekend, so I’ll have a little more time to recuperate. To be honest, I don’t think riding would aggravate the problem, but I ‘m not going to ride in sub freezing temperatures if I don’t have to. I expect that today will be the last round of IV drugs, and that they’ll give me a script of oral antibiotics to take for a few days. I don’t know this yet; but it makes sense to me. Then again, if they want me to come back for one more round of IV, I won’t complain. They’re the experts. Anyhow, things are a whole lot better this morning than I thought they would be. Life goes on. |

Crusty- glad the meds seem to be working quickly. My dad had something similar happen when he was a young man. He was working on some piece of mechanical equipment, trying to get something to go together and he smacked it with the heel of his hand. A couple of days later, his hand was really swollen and puffy and kept getting worse. When he finally went to the doc, turned out it was an infection that they had to lance and clean out (yuck!) and then give him antibiotics. He always warned me when I was a kid NOT to do that, but use an appropriate hammer for the job. |
