So I have and opportunity to pick up a 1125r with 14k miles for $1500. PO did a real bad rattle can job, not too worried about that, rear breaks need to be replaced, and the forks are leaking. I still think it's a good deal and would clean up pretty good.

Only catch, it's 2 hours away and I would have to ride it back. Can I ride on the forks in the condition? Is it a good deal? What kind of problems should I be looking for?

One of my forks let go about half way to Daytona one year.
Rode it the rest of the way there and back home with no problems.

As for the rest... I'm no help. Never owned one of them there water cooled Buells.

If you ride that thing back to Cleveland this time of year.... you will have to do a ride report with pics.
Freak'n blizzard in Columbus today and I can't imagine Cleveland is any better if not worse.

O, forgot to mention I moved to San Antonio, no chance in a blizzard.

Are the fork seals just bad, causing the fluid to leak out?

If so, you could ride it forever, provided you slowed down for bumps and turns sufficiently to accommodate a bike with no suspension dampening.

Not the safest, but probably not even technically illegal.

If you can tame the pogo stick and the fluid stays off the front brake...assuming all else is well, why not?

I don't know it it has all leaked out, or it is slowly leaking.

Buy it. If you decide that you don't want to fix the problems, then turn around and sell it for two grand. You'll make an easy five hundred bucks, and someone else will get a damned good deal.

If I was back in the States, I'd offer you two grand for it right now.

I'd DEFINITELY ascertain why the seller is giving it away- if possible see if you can give the VIN to a good Buell tech to see if the recalls were done, plus it'd be great to see some service records somehow. Then again, that might be an exercise in pissing windward...

I always thought the first year bikes looked the best with the stock colors, shouldn't be too hard to get it looking proper again.

Good luck, post up as things develop!

If I wanted the bike, I'd ride it home with the forks in that condition (slowly, carefully, and on as many straight and smooth roads as possible).

Has dude been offroading the bike?! Look at the area of travel for the front shocks, and the amount of red clay dirt on the front of the header, and the dirt on the wheels. Put the hairy eyeball on this thing. Might be a wheelie-douche treatment.

$1500 is good money, IF it's not been abused ridiculously. Obviously dude has uglified it, which indicates bad taste, bad judgement. Back in the day I used to be a buyer agent for an outfit that bought/sold used metric bikes- I developed as best I could a whole range of questions and observations to determine how the machine had been treated.

Best of luck, again.

Wolf, I got the snow blower out last night, made sure all was good. We go an inch of snow.

I wouldn't be too worried about a seal leaking by itself... but taken in consideration the fact that it's THAT bad without fixing it screams that the bike has been ridden with no fu cks given. Honestly, I'd be surprised if it has a title.

I see this allll the time locally. 'Track' or 'stunt' bikes only... The bike is either stolen, or they stopped paying and can't get a title. One of the reasons I don't hang out with most non-Bueller/Triumph/Ducati riders in the area.

He said he has a clean title in his name, the price is closer to 2200 but I offered him $1000 and some thing that goes bang that I got a great deal on way back when. Waiting on a vin from him and more detailed pics.

But yes, it looks rough, but I think I can make it look good again. And bring this back from death row.

You could always rent a uhaul for a day and go get it. $20 for piece of mind.

How much fiberglass is in the frame from dumping it hard? Why else would it be all painted?

Looks to me like dushe- canoe got paint overspray on fork tubes. Take some fine steel wool to them. Might heal up some while riding.

If it doesn't make ugly noises or leak too much I would be on it.
