Oh I see what they did there! Longer flare, cut the fender back to the cowl edge. That's a good move.

It can prevent the likes of this happening!








You'd think a professional body man's Jeep would look better than that! Five minutes with the plasma cutter would have it fixed.

Now that is cool!

I took a picture of a late 40's Jeep in Harrisville a couple of years ago with a factory installed two bottom farm plow.

They were promoting them after WWII as the do all for American's coming back home from the war.

I was looking at that CJ5 back hoe again. That is so awesome.

It reminded me of my first Jeep. It was a 1957 CJ5 that same color blue with that same metal box short cab. "F" head four cylinder, three speed, rusted so bad that it took a whole 4' x 10' sheet of 20 guage steel to fix it.

What a cold, noisy, rattly, rough ride! I did not think it could be possible to get that beat up driving a vehicle on the highway without wrecking, when it was topping out at 38 MPH! I was only nineteen years old, and rode a lot of dirt bikes, crashing them frequently even, and that Jeep was a rougher ride!

To think, I traded a solid two door 1964 Chevy Belair with no engine and a nice, fairly new, manufactured tow bar for it!

All of my old pictures were lost in a garage fire twenty some years ago. Damn that old Jeep looked good, but what a POS to drive!

I can buy a G2 front axle set up the way I want/need it for LESS than a used D44 out of a Jeep.
Called around to a few yards and was quoted $2500 and up for USED D44.
Then you need to add the cost or a re-gear and choice of locker.

Big Brown Van Man wont be able to handle it....

This is why I went to Chevy heavy half ton axles. I bought a thirty five year old, 77,000 mile, rusted frame, 4x4 Chevy truck for $700.00. I sold everything but the transmission/transfer case and the rears that are in my Jeep. Got my $700.00 back over a couple of months, and ended up with a bit of a monster Jeep set up for my labor.

I could cut the housings and buy shorter axles to get the tires in closer, more Jeep like, but that would cost probably a grand plus a couple of weekends of labor. So why bother? It is off road only at this point and if I did go back to road legal, in Tennessee there is no requirement to cover the tires.

I have 3.73 gears and recently welded the rear gears for hard posi-lock purposes. If I gear down I will go into a super low mid gear reducer that mounts between the trans and the transfer case. Haven't felt the need having around 400 ft lbs of torque available.

Did I ever tell you I can be a clever cheap bastard. I get some strange looks from the Corvette club guys when I make stuff or just do my own work. They of course are not in the business of repairing vehicles, and it helps that I built race cars for years, I guess I have that advantage.

I'm eyeballing fuel cells to get max clearance on the back end.

today the wallet took a pretty good hit.

ordered the following for the 8.8 axle

Yukon Ultimate 88 Kit aka chromoly axles, C Clip eliminators and such
Yukon 5.13 ring and pinion
Lube locker gasket
"Solid" diff cover
TJ Bracket kit to convert the Ford 8.8 to fit under my Jeep
Detroit 31 spline locker

the weakest link will be the drive shafts and Transfer case....

Sounds like you will have bullet proof axles and gears. Carry spare drive shafts with universals and what ever they bolt on with. Practice removing and installing them before "trail testing" for your weak spots.

My nephew carried spare drive shafts with U joints on his truggy. Had to install one in a rock pile. Lost a nut off a U bolt.....no body had one to fit. Not a fun thing when just carrying a simple set of U bolts and nuts would have been the ticket.

Before you mount tires, get the wagon wheels stripped and powder coated. That white paint will flake off in 500 miles from metal flex.

Hey Joe, have you ever known anyone to dislike powder coatings?

As a paint shop guy I don't like the stuff, and I could easily sell it if I wanted to. High or even medium quality urethane paint is a better option. I fix so many truck frames, bumpers, wheels, and other parts that are powder coated from the factory where it causes more rust than paint ever could. And it's original appearance lasts about the same as paint because of that.

I have a Freightliner here now that has a gloss black powder coat on the frame, it still looks good between the rust scabs. But once water gets in it holds it in, causing usually giant blistering rust scabs under it. Then it cannot really be feathered out for a nice refinish like paint can.

True, some of these after market wheels will be paint peeling in a year or so, IMHO, run the original finish until that starts, then blast them, prime them, urethane paint them. After all, the whole point to paint is to buy time from the gods of corrosion, so if the first year is good with the factory paint that is a free year, then your repaint will be starting it's life a year later into the life of the wheels. Besides they will get the crap beat out of them on trail rides and need redone once in a while anyways.

Powder coat, once water gets under it migration can cause the coating to come off in sheets leaving a very well rusted part behind.
I have never experienced this with a properly prepared chemically bonded quality paint! Most recent fail

Well I started my Jeep up for the first time since August 27. Put a battery in it cranked a bit and if fired right up. I like to let it crank to get the gas back to the carburetor so that it will have time to circulate the oil, otherwise I would prime it. Running great as usual. Just fill the tank with premium as I normally do on things that sit for long periods.

I was surprised the lights still work even.

My son rolled his 40" spare tire over beside my 38.5. How does that tire look four inches taller than mine and it is not even on a rim??

What better thing to do on a 73F degree day after Christmas? Considered riding the Uly but the record rains we have had has mud everywhere and water still running down my drive and yard.
